    Hospital gown labeled American Public.

Caption: "A spine implant? You don't think it's too late?"

And btw, that picture is of course racist.

  2. Mango Punch   16 years ago

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! You did so well last week WTF happened?!?

  3. Fist of Etiquette   16 years ago

The patient must have accidentally read that he was getting a lobotomy off the chart, because Dr. Obama certainly didn't tell him.

  4. SugarFree   16 years ago

And btw, that picture is of course racist.

I agree. To portray Obama as a lowly public employee like a doctor is the post-health care reform equivalent of dressing him up like a janitor.

Once Steve Smith gets done shaving his entire body so that he can pass for human, I'm sure he will agree.

  5. Fist of Etiquette   16 years ago

Why can't I see the whole toon at the top here? Why do I always have to go to another page to view the FriFuns? What, are the internets tossing Reason kickbacks for each click they force on me?

    Oh.

  6. domoarrigato   16 years ago

    I liked anarch's idea better - I give it a gentlemans D

  7. Hugh Akston   16 years ago

And btw, that picture is of course racist.

You'll notice how only one aspect of the cartoon is "colored."

  8. Episiarch   16 years ago

This is stupid. A primary complaint against Obamacare is that health care will be rationed, not increased to totally unnecessary, expensive, and unwanted procedures such as lobotomies.

Henry Payne needs a lobotomy. D-. The only reason it's not an F is at least it was racist.

  9. Tomcat1066   16 years ago

I took it to mean that Obama was doing a lot more "surgery" to the US health care system than was needed, like performing a lobotomy on a guy with a sprained ankle.

    Plus, it's racist.

  10. Untermensch   16 years ago

It's not a good cartoon, but it's pretty clear Episiarch didn't get it either or his complaint wouldn't read the way it does. That he didn't seem to get it (thinking it was about rationing and all) just shows how poorly it was done in the first place.

However, this cartoon goes beyond the usual inanity of Payne's cartoons to actually being harmful. By comparing the perceived problems with health care to a trivial problem like a sprained ankle he just reinforces Team D's contention that those opposed to ObamaCare just don't understand the pain Americans are feeling (or whatever crap they claim). Given that health care actually is a major issue of concern for people, this sort of cartoon makes it look like Team R really is just out of touch. I know Payne is arguing that Obama's plan will do more harm than good and eliminate the few good points of the current system, but this cartoon isn't effective in making that point.

I'm not a cartoonist and couldn't do better myself, but I can still spot a dud.

  11. anarch, Doctor of Divination   16 years ago

Epi, I think it's meant to imply:

    - The goal the regime has for its subjects' critical thinking capacities

    - Overstepping typical of governmental solutions

    - Nanny-state's intrusions for our well-being without our consent

  12. Xeones   16 years ago

Man, this blows. Today was shaping up to be an ok day, too. Thanks to Henry Payne, now i'm all depressed and slightly uncomfortable.

  13. SugarFree   16 years ago

    Xeones,

Would it make you feel better if I told you that you are a racist? I will if it will help...

  14. Xeones   16 years ago

By the way, Henry Payne is, obviously, a fascist.

  15. Xeones   16 years ago

    Thanks, Sweet'n'Low. I guess i feel better.

    You're still a fascist, though.

  16. SugarFree   16 years ago

Well, you're a racist, little buddy. [hugs]

  17. Episiarch   16 years ago

By comparing the perceived problems with health care to a trivial problem like a sprained ankle

I see what you're saying, and if that was his intention, then it's just as dumb, seeing as no one involved in this debate seems to think the health system's problems are as trivial as a sprained ankle; nor is a lobotomy an appropriate metaphor for the "overhaul" Obama wants to do on the system--some kind of "full body cast or replacement" would be better. In fact, as I just tried to think of better metaphors I realized the whole premise of the cartoon is flawed with this interpretation as well.

So...D-. Not an F because at least it was racist.

  18. FrBunny   16 years ago

    Do they do "emergency" lobotomies?

Or is that the metaphor for unnecessarily rushing through the overhaul?

    Deep.

  19. Tomcat1066   16 years ago

I think a better analogy would be a broken ankle being treated with an above the knee amputation.

On that, I do agree. The metaphor isn't quite there. I see the point, exaggerate to make it more dramatic, but it doesn't help at all.

  20. SugarFree   16 years ago

I think it could have made more sense with:

"Amputation? But I only came in with a strained ankle!"

It stays focused on the leg, doesn't make the lobotomy nonseq, and is scaled properly to the heath care situation.

  21. SugarFree   16 years ago

    Up yours, Tomcat.

  22. Warty   16 years ago

STEVE SMITH NO LIKE RACIST CARTOON ARRRRRRRRGH

  23. Tomcat1066   16 years ago

    Thanks, but I'm already married

  24. SugarFree   16 years ago

    Thanks, but I'm already married

Then you already have enough trouble in your life. I'll leave you alone.

  25. SugarFree   16 years ago

    Warty,

People go to the ER for a sprained ankle? Hmmm I guess I learned something....

  30. Xeones   16 years ago

Well, Anonymity Douche likes it, so Payne has that going for him.

BARRY-O MEDICINE GOOD GOOD LOVE BARRY-O BANANA HAPPY MEDICINE MONEY SAD SAD

  32. SugarFree   16 years ago

    Anonymity Douche likes it

    "You go, boi"

X, it depends. Does "boi" refer to Payne, Obama, the objecting patient, or something one of us said as a criticism? Ambiguoumity Dude is more like it.

And "boi" might indicate that AnonymityBot is, in fact, Avril Lavigne.

  33. SugarFree   16 years ago

It's racist to suggest that Obama knows ASL.

  34. David (not that one)   16 years ago

Political cartoons just suck. That's all there is to it.

  35. SugarFree   16 years ago

Why has Reason stayed silent on the Kelly Clarkson/Self magazine controversy? What shadowy corporate masters are they serving?

  36. Spoonman   16 years ago

    Do they do "emergency" lobotomies?

Where I come from, they're called "justifiable homicide", but yes.

  37. Untermensch   16 years ago

Episiarch, you'll get no argument from me on your last post. I think this is one of Payne's worst yet, and that's saying something.

  38. Fist of Etiquette   16 years ago

Are those teleprompter screens they're racing with on either side of the gurney? Now that's racist.

  39. Hugh Akston   16 years ago

And "boi" might indicate that AnonymityBot is, in fact, Avril Lavigne.

I never would have pegged Avril Lavigne as a racist. But there you go.

  40. Amber Waves   16 years ago

    The caption should read

No way doc. No way. For the love of God let me talk to the death panel again.

  41. Amber Waves   16 years ago

    "Do they do "emergency" lobotomies?"

    Only if you're a Kennedy.

  42. Amber Waves   16 years ago

    "Avril Lavigne"

    I would so grind her.

  43. P Brooks   16 years ago

I feel like I've stumbled into a freshman literature class.

Sometimes a lame cartoon is just a lame cartoon.

    Fascists.

  44. SugarFree   16 years ago

I never would have pegged Avril Lavigne as a racist.

All Canadians are racist. Especially the white ones.

    J. W. Burns, a known Canadian, coined the term Sasquatch. Steve Smith hates Canadians.

  45. SugarFree   16 years ago

Sometimes a lame cartoon is just a lame cartoon.

Opposing deconstructionist criticism is heterosexist and ableist.

  46. Tomcat1066   16 years ago

    And racist.

  47. FrBunny   16 years ago

Every poster so far has been grossly antidisestablishmentarinist. Cancel my subscription. Reason indeed!

  48. Tomcat1066   16 years ago

It is obvious that you are a racist, so be gone!

  49. Spoonman   16 years ago

Damnit, FrBunny, I know it's Friday, but it's still early to be drinking.

  50. Warren   16 years ago

The selective use of color is a good gimmick, when used to some purpose. The ridicule of Obamacare here is not related to any substantive critique.

    Not funny
    Not relevant
    Poor artwork
    Grade: F

  51. P Brooks   16 years ago

The patient is white; Obama hates black people!

  52. Mike Laursen   16 years ago

primary complaint against Obamacare is that health care will be rationed, not increased to totally unnecessary, expensive, and unwanted procedures such as lobotomies.

Would this caption have worked: "Get this patient to a waiting room, stat!"

  53. Warty   16 years ago

How about this caption: "Harvest my organs, comrade, so that even in death I shall help the workers liquidate the kulaks!"

  54. Aristotle   16 years ago

The selective use of color is a good gimmick, when used to some purpose.

In some cases, purposes are concealed. Here the purpose is evident. Let us proceed to other topics.

  55. Brandybuck   16 years ago

Oh my God! That cartoon isn't worshipping Obama! It's racist!

  56. d   16 years ago

I agree. To portray Obama as a lowly public employee like a doctor is the post-health care reform equivalent of dressing him up like a janitor.

How many loyal subjects of the Queen will not get this joke?

  57. Rice Bingham   16 years ago

Anonimity douche is a fuckin' fascist, yo!

Xeones is off his game. I think he may have a streak of fascism himself.

  58. Francesco Sinibaldi   16 years ago

Like a star in the sky.

    That shining
    star reappears
    like a final

    vigorous cliff;

    remains, with
    a little intention

    of your sight.

My only point is that if you take the Bible straight, as I'm sure many of Reasons readers do, you will see a lot of the Old Testament stuff as absolutely insane. Even some cursory knowledge of Hebrew and doing some mathematics and logic will tell you that you really won't get the full deal by just doing regular skill english reading for those books. In other words, there's more to the books of the Bible than most will ever grasp. I'm not concerned that Mr. Crumb will go to hell or anything crazy like that! It's just that he, like many types of religionists, seems to take it literally, take it straight...the Bible's books were not written by straight laced divinity students in 3 piece suits who white wash religious beliefs as if God made them with clothes on...the Bible's books were written by people with very different mindsets..
