Dilbert on Bailout Hearings
For more Dilbert, go here.
Reason interviewed Scott Adams way back in 1999. A snippet:
I find that I do not align with any well-established political viewpoint that has a name associated with it. So I've called myself pro-death. I looked for what commonality there is in all of my work and in all of my political views and realized that I support abortion, capital punishment, and a strong military. When I put together the things I'm in favor of, the only thing they had in common was that they all ended up killing someone, whether it was a fetus or a terrorist.

I get it now. The cartoonists that are funny and poignant get their own strip and make money. The others just do Friday Funnies.
What I wouldn't give to see someone talk to Congress like that during a hearing for real. Especially to Schumer.
Wednesday Funnies? That's two days early. You've ruined my white pants!
That is fucking hilarious.
Something tells me Scott Adams won't be testifying on Capitol Hill any time soon.
Dogbert is my new hero. For the record, my new villain is the entire staff of yammering retards at CNBC. Except the brunette with the big hooters. That is all.

You're aware of Marmaduke, right?
You're aware of Marmaduke, right?
Oh god, let's not start listing the terrible syndicated cartoons, it'll take all day. Wait, maybe that could be fun.
One of the worst is Hi and Lois.
You're aware of Marmaduke, right?
They pay him for that? I thought he was some editor's retarded little brother who got an ice cream cone for spewing out a strip every week.
Surveys of the readers of my newspaper still show The Family Circus as the favorite comic. What the fuck is wrong with people?
Dilbert+bailout hearings=target rich environment
What's wrong with The Family Circus?
What I wouldn't give to see someone talk to Congress like that during a hearing for real. Especially to Schumer.
Dee Snyder did a pretty good job with Algore back in the day, but I can't think of anyone else off the top of my head who's showed Congress the disrespect it deserves.
That strip is hilarious. Well done, Mr. Adams. Well done. However, his flippant remark in regards to abortion is disturbing. Not in being pro-choice, as I can see a really legitimate reason for being pro-choice (believing that the fetus is not yet an alive human being...when is consciousness achieved?), but to just admit that you support killing an innocent human being (and he implies he thinks it is a human being) is pretty f'ed up. Again, maybe he was just being flippant and it skipped past my humor gland. Anyhow, this particular "episode" of Dilbert is hilarious and dogbert was 100% correct. The US congress is filled to the rim with detestable hypocrites.
I rarely do this but Adam's is one of the few 'artists' I've stopped keeping tabs on because of his other endeavors like his blog. Reading it makes me wonder what planet he lives on. His observations on evolution being one of them. I have no more interest in enriching him.
Pro Lib,
I prefer this:
http://dfc.furr.org/
That deserves a TWTW
That would be Representative Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick(D), Detroit. She's on the House Appropriations Committee.
Hey, remember when people in the news business would get incensed over 'congressional junkets?"
As for cartooning:
Frazz
Red & Rover
Pearls Before Swine
Get Fuzzy
Kevin
There's still some funny on the comics page. The real question, given the state of newspaper publishers' balance sheets, is how long there will be strips printed on paper.

Wee Pals, Love is...
And can someone explain Zippy the Pinhead to me? Is it brilliant surrealism or just indescribably stupid and banal? Because I'm pretty much settled on the latter.

Howard Hughes gave em what for back back in the day. Of course he was completely insane.
Get Fuzzy is the 30 Rock of comics. Way over-rated and, when you get right down to it, not that funny.
I read Frazz and Pearls Before Swine daily. I love the Angry Bob vignettes.
And can someone explain Zippy the Pinhead to me?
It's a cruel hoax.
I guess Frank Zappa did an OK job too.
I forgot to link my 11:48am comment.
Sorry.

Zippy is a pretentious dufus test.
Dee Snyder did a pretty good job with Algore back in the day, but I can't think of anyone else off the top of my head who's showed Congress the disrespect it deserves.
That's because Dee said we weren't going to take it any more, because he wanted to rock.
Howard Hughes gave em what for back back in the day. Of course he was completely insane.
He was also insanely rich and could get away with a lot. Not that that detracts from what he did.
Dee Snyder did a pretty good job with Algore
I guess Frank Zappa did an OK job too.
We should also note John Denver, who also held his own at those hearings, and whose work I respect more and more as time goes by.
Achewood has spent a few strips prank calling other comics.
(up yours Garfield)

Were you ever able to retrieve your penis from the thresher?
It's the grandkids. Once you get grandkids you start loving Family Circus. It's genetics I think, the little tikes rot your brain.
Awesome comics that we will never see the likes of again: Calvin and Hobbes, Bloom County (the orginal, not the post-rehab crap), and Farside.
Zappa is the man.
Achewood has spent a few strips prank calling other comics.
Remember at the end of Bloom County when the various characters were trying to get jobs in other comics? Steve going to Cathy was the best.
It's the grandkids. Once you get grandkids you start loving Family Circus.
No, it's the Alzheimer's.
The Cathy and Marmaduke ones are gold.
Everyone's probably already seen it, but here is Calvin and Hobbes on the current financial mess.
More generally, Here is a very entertaining comics commentary site.
"What I wouldn't give to see someone talk to Congress like that during a hearing for real. Especially to Schumer."
Yeah me too.
The C-Span ratings would go through the roof for that one.
Another libertarian leaning cartoon jibe from today.
J sub D,
What. The. Fuck? I don't even understand it. And I'd like to see a sentence diagram of that first panel.
I'm kinda high on codeine, so I readily admit I might be missing something.
Suzanna Hupp delivered the ultimate smackdown on Congress. This was during hearings on the "assault" weapons ban. She wiped the floor with Chuck Schumer.
Get Fuzzy is the 30 Rock of comics. Way over-rated and, when you get right down to it, not that funny.
I agree with you, but with one caveat. They can both be really, REALLY funny once in a while. So you end up watching/reading a whole bunch terrible strips/shows in the hopes that it will be one of those diamonds in the rough. This, incidentally, is what makes them overrated.
A not so obvious awful cartoon is Tom Tomorrow. His strip infects local art's weeklies. Even when I agree with the strip, I find it unfunny. The penguin is an overused avatar. Often many points are repeated week after week.
Latest
Is that supposed to be funny?
Is that supposed to be funny?
It's not funny because the left being disappointed by Obama in any way at all is just a fairy tale dreamed up by the Republicans. Tom Tomorrow is clearly a crypto-conservative.
Tina Fey being massively overrated is part of what makes 30 Rock so overrated. Why oh why can't SNL just go off the air? Even MadTV mostly sucks now since every one of the earliest cast members are gone. I was watching them try and do a Pacino/DeNiro skit and the new guy doing DeNiro was awful. They can never top the Frank Caliendo as Pacino/Will Sasso as DeNiro skits.
Tom Tomorrow could be funny circa 1999, but has been doing exactly the same thing every week since then.
His strips on rental car agencies fining their customers for speeding, and on wired magazine were quite funny.
But a big fan of the strip "Dykes to Watch Out For":

Even MadTV mostly sucks now
Now? The last "That's My White Mama!" was ten years ago. Unless they revived it recently, it being so topical and ripe with possibility. But I know they didn't, because nothing is funny anymore.
Tom Tomorrow could be funny
Except this. So deadpan.
Even MadTV mostly sucks now
There was a time when MadTV didn't suck?
Yesterday's Dilbert was just as funny. I actually laughed out loud, which I find I rarly do at comics any more, except for the occassional Get Fuzzy.
Eat the dead
There was a time when MadTV didn't suck?
1998-2002. They had Will Sasso, Michael McDonald, Debra Wilson, Aries Spears, Alex Borstein, Mo Collins, (and Frank Caliendo at the end).
This was their golden period. A number of years ago Comedy Central bought the old episodes and had the good sense to run almost exclusively episodes from those seasons. I TiVo'd and lolled my ass off.
As soon as Sasso left, it started to go downhill and is very bad now. But you can see his Kenny Rogers sketches on YouTube, at least.

Was that joe in the comic?

The Gig Gay Comedy Sketch Show on the LOGO channel is funny as heck. They have this guy who does Maya Angelou reaging the Man-to-Man personals from Craig's List. Plus, it really makes you realize just how overrated the poetry of Angelou is.
That should have read -- The Big Gay Comedy Sketch Show
Even good shows / comics can go downhill. The 1974 season of Monty Python and the 1994 season of Kids In The Hall show this quite eloquently. The smart ones know when to quit.
The penguin is an overused avatar.
F'n tell me about it. I was pretty out of it, culturally when I Photoshopped the Linux (Tux) penguin into a stoner as a joke for some friends. I started using it as an avatar, only to discover shortly thereafter that there were about ten recent animated movies that had penguins, there had been a huge documentary smash about penguins, etc. etc.
The smart ones know when to quit.
The network won't let their big sketch shows end. Just look at SNL. The least they could do is fire all the writers and hire some new ones, but they'll never do that either.
I was just amazed that one of these types of network sketch shows was actually able to be very funny for a few seasons.
"I was going to avoid a cliche, but then I got high"
Kolohe, if that's directed at me, re-read what I wrote. I was unaware the cartoon that I "got" high was a cliche.
Personally, I quit smoking pot about 20 years ago, which should be obvious since I put a joint in his wing. My pot smoking friends all told me they haven't smoked joints for years.
Permitted penguins:
* The Penguin (Batman)
* Feathers McGraw (The Wrong Trousers)
* Chilly Willy
* The Penguin (The Blues Brothers)
* The BakedPenguin
* The Linux penguin
* Opus (Bloom County)
Impermissible penguins:
* Any penguins not listed above.

They will, but only after the writers they hire have gone well past their prime. Considering the first 5 seasons of KitH and every season of Mr. Show, I'd say HBO needs to find another sketch troupe.
Pro Lib - thanks. I'm sending you a gift certificate good for one toga at Toga World.
Great! Just in time for the "Saturnalia in March" season!
The first dozen or so times I saw the Hulu ad, I laughed.
"TV only softens your brain - like a ripe banana."
Impermissible penguins:

The gung ho spec op penguins in Madagascar were damn funny. Best part of the movie, IMO.
You're aware of Marmaduke, right?
Obviously, you guys don't get it. Marmaduke is like a really big dog. Like really, really big.
My problem is that abortion doesn't go far enough. We should have abortion until the 300th tri-mester.

My problem is that abortion doesn't go far enough. We should have abortion until the 300th tri-mester.
300th tri-mester? Damn JB that's even too radical for me. I say that a woman has an absolute (unsubsidized) right to terminate her child, for any reason at all, right up until the moment of birth. After that, both parents have that right. At least until the little bastard gets a job and starts making a financial contribution to the household.
I quit reading the comics after Bloom County.
Agnes is my personal hero.
