What a piece of shit! Daschle, I mean.

I heard about this ad this morning on the radio. Typical bull. Why didn't someone bust him for this kind of nonsense long ago? "Duh, I'm a common man, duh."

  2. Geotpf   17 years ago

Well, he might have actually been a "common man" back in 1986, when this ad aired.

  3. Pro Libertate   17 years ago

Perhaps. Seems a bit unlikely, knowing him.

  4. Your Good Buddy Johnny Clarke   17 years ago

I don't care how frugal he is, the boy needs to get that engine rebuilt.

  5. h-dawg   17 years ago

Uh, isn't that car way out of compliance with clean air laws? Did the environmental lobby support this guy?

  6. Dello   17 years ago

    From the ad:

"A penny saved is a penny earned."

    More like:

"A penny saved is one that I didn't pay in taxes."

  7. joe   17 years ago

If Tom Daschle can make an American-built car run for 238,000 miles, maybe he SHOULD be appointed to high office.

  8. Josh   17 years ago

joe -- Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it would pass emissions inspection at this point.

  9. Pro Libertate   17 years ago

    Car Czar?

  10. joe   17 years ago

    Josh,

Too true. If it was belching smoke like that in 1986...

  11. Orange Line Special   17 years ago

I just checked Reason's 1986 archives, and I found "Dascchhle: Truly a Man of the People!", "Be Polite, Don't Ask Dascchhle Any Questions", and "We Wholeheartedly and Completely Endorse Tom Dascchhle Because He's With-it".

  12. Kolohe   17 years ago

I like how the 'Diva Village' ads keep appearing on the Daschle posts. Google adsense is wise beyond its years.

  13. joe   17 years ago

Sarah Palin's tax returns indicate that she did not include the $43,900 received for travel by her husband and kids. Palin claims to have donated $8,000 worth of clothing the last two years to charity. Palin's husband claims his hobby, you know the snowmobiles, is a business which lost $10,000 last year. Palin charged the tax payers for living in her own house,(Palin owns six homes), and didn't report it.

It does not appear that Gov. Palin reported as income the per diem reimbursement she received for travel, meals, and lodging expenses as governor of Alaska. Her 2007 W-2 reports $107,987 of income as governor, and the Washington Post pegs her governor's salary as $125,000.

In layman's terms that means that Palin was charging Alaskan tax payers for staying at home and calling it travel, then she didn't report it. This is illegal. There is no question that these per diems are taxable income.

  14. Kolohe   17 years ago

As person who used to collect per diem on a fairly regular basis, it was never taxable income, even it is was above the actual incurred expense (e.g. meal per diem)

What Palin did from the point of view of 'fiscal conservatism' was damnable, but I don't know if it's illegal.

  15. joe   17 years ago

Housing allowances for staying at home?

I don't know how the IRS decides if your per diems are taxable.

I do know that a whole lot of ricocheting starburst Palin pod people are dishonest, partisan hypocrites.

  16. SIV   17 years ago

Haha joe is spamming every thread with his spurious "Sarah Palin tax cheat" meme.

Cheer up joe. Your team won the election.

  17. bendover   17 years ago

joe - I don't really have a dog in your Palin fight...but a few things to consider:

Do you really want the Obamas to have to pick up the FMV of the use of Airforce One for Michelle?

Palin claims to have donated $8k in clothing over two years - yeah so what? Not even close to IRS red flag territory at her income level.

"I don't know how the IRS decides if your per diems are taxable" - see CONUS per diem rates

"Her 2007 W-2 reports $107,987 of income as governor, and the Washington Post pegs her governor's salary as $125,000" - probably due to a 403(b) deduction.

    "...partisan hypocrites" - no comment.

  18. Kolohe   17 years ago

Housing allowances for staying at home?

The job where I collected per diem a lot had me make monthly trips to DC. Rather than stay in a hotel I crashed with my parents or my girlfriend. Conceivably, I could have wrote up a receipt for x amount of dollars and been reimubursed ethically- as long as actually paid the money to someone. (I didn't do this, because one I'm too lazy to do it, and two, it is all kinds of squirelly) And I got a meal per diem of a fixed amount regardless of whether I ate Mom's cooking or had dinner at the Crystal City Restaurant.

The per diem rules are drawn up by the issuer of the per diem (in this case, the State of Alaska). And it's my impression that the IRS is somewhat more flexible with government reimbursements than they are with private ones*

But I agree that it would have been nice for Palin to cut out a lot of this extravangance as well, when she was hocking the state jet. And the expenses incurred by the family members would not be legit under fed reimbursement rules.

*it's possibly because government has long provided benefits, which were never taxable - like food and lodging - directly; moving it to a reimbursement for expenses incurred was actually supposed to be a cost cutting measure. (Granted back in the olden days, like when operating on the frontier, reimbursement was the norm, until more of the usual structures of the state came into being)

  19. Kolohe   17 years ago

"Her 2007 W-2 reports $107,987 of income as governor, and the Washington Post pegs her governor's salary as $125,000" - probably due to a 403(b) deduction.

I agree; my W-2 is less than a pay table would indicate by exactly the amount I dump into TSP.

  20. SIV   17 years ago

I can't seem to find it on the web. When does Obama's huge tax increase on those earning less than 250k a year take effect (SCHIP)?

    Immediately?
    Next week?
    March 1?

  21. Kolohe   17 years ago

    April 1, 2009.

  22. SIV   17 years ago

Lux Interior Dead at 62 RIP

    Kolohe,

Thanks.I don't need to stock up tonight.
I feel like a 'tard for not being able to find that.I was so good at fast research in the pre-internet era.I'm usuually pretty good now.
    Link is bad though:)

  23. J sub D   17 years ago

I can't seem to find it on the web. When does Obama's huge tax increase on those earning less than 250k a year take effect (SCHIP)?
C'mon! Everybody knows that the overwhelming majority of cigrettes smoked in this ciountry are are puffed down by folks who make > $250,000.

Or it's really for the good of the ignorant poor slobs who smoke. They are just not intelligent enough to know that cogarettes can kill them.

    Or something.

  24. joe   17 years ago

    What's that, SIV?

I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of the cork popping on this giant bottle of champagne.

It happens every time I consider the fact that the new president has banned torture, and banned extraordinary rendition, keeping his promise to overturn the criminal practices of the dog who inflicted them on our society.

  25. joe   17 years ago

...Obama's huge tax increase on those earning less than 250k a year

Lol, that's fucking hilarious. Several pennies on a pack of cigarettes, regardless of the buyer's income, is now "a huge tax increase on people earning less than 250k a year."

You know who strains this hard to spin facts to the point of untruth?

    Desperate people.

    *POP!!!*

  26. Kolohe   17 years ago

I forgot THOMAS does dynamic links. Search engine is here. SCHIP is HR 2 and the tax stuff is in Title VII. (section 701)

  27. SIV   17 years ago

    joe,

Supporting regressive taxation? Not surprising from the likes of you.

What happened to your liberal concern for the poor? Thats over $200 bucks a year for a pack-a-day smoker. the actual price increase will be higher. Most smokers are poor in being below median income.

  28. Kolohe   17 years ago

Several pennies on a pack of cigarettes,

61 of them. $222 extra a year for a pack a day habit. Roughly a 5% increase in their federal tax liability for a family of four making 40K a year. ($3K for FICA, $1.5K for income tax, $200 gas tax and other misc)

  29. joe   17 years ago

Oh my goodness. Not sixty one cents.

Why, over the course of a year, that's almost 10% of the tax credit that family would be getting.

Wait a sec. No it isn't. That isn't anywhere near 10% of the tax credit they'll be getting from Obama.

  30. SIV   17 years ago

Well joe you partisan hypocrite hack,

So now regressive taxes on the poor are a good thing? Well I'm sure the poor will see more of them real soon.

  31. joe   17 years ago

What happened to your liberal concern for the poor? Thats over $200 bucks a year for a pack-a-day smoker.

Good thing they're getting much larger refundable tax credit, then - like everyone else with an income below $250,000 per year.

Which makes this a very progressive policy - expanding assistance to poor people, without increasing (decreasing, actually) the overall tax burden.

My concern for the poor? Why, it's aptly demonstrated by my support for Barack Obama's efforts to cut their taxes and help them afford health care, of course.

  32. joe   17 years ago

    Heh, pre-butted.

    Awesome.

  33. joe   17 years ago

What makes this even better, you partisan hack, is that I now have you on the record acknowledging that taxes other than income taxes that poor people pay are, in fact, taxes.

Which means you're going to look like even more of a partisan hack when you try to argue that refunding those taxes to them is "welfare."

  34. joe   17 years ago

    From another thread:

    SIV | February 4, 2009, 8:26pm | #

    joe,

No most tobacco users make over 250k a year.I'm sure Obama will offer the few poor ones a tax credit to make up the difference.

SIV, it's easy enough to make you look like a moron without the assists, thanks.

Srsly, you spent months bitching and moaning about the fact that Barack Obama is giving a big tax credit to poor people. Did that totally slip your mind? Did you remember half a second after hitting "Submit Comment?"

    Lol. Smarter shills please.

  35. SIV   17 years ago

Good thing they're getting much larger refundable tax credit, then - like everyone else with an income below $250,000 per year.

Good luck with that. For most people w/o dependents that is a whopping $500 if it happens at all.Maybe they'll see it when Obama bans lobbyists from his administration and ends medical marijuana raids (wait! He didn't actually promise to do that last one)

  36. joe   17 years ago

For most people w/o dependents that is a whopping $500 if it happens at all. No, dumbass, that's only the increase in the child tax credit.

Do you think that, for once, you could be bothered to know what you're talking about?

(BTW, that still makes SCHIP expansion + tax policy progressive, even without considering the benefits from the program itself. And makes your argument...well...the sort of thing you'd want to change the subject from. Oh, look, you did!)

  37. joe   17 years ago

Anyway, I'm just glad I finally got you to admit that there are taxes other than the income tax.

    You big socialist.

    So, spread any wealth lately?

  38. SIV   17 years ago

Srsly, you spent months bitching and moaning about the fact that Barack Obama is giving a big tax credit to poor people.

Only in your mind joe.I've always argued against taxation of anyone, particularly the poor.Hey, you don't have to worry Democrats don't pay their taxes.Looks like Obama may have to make his cabinet a little more bi-partisan if he wants to fill the jobs.

A 2 pack a day habit or a one income couple of pack-a-day smokers with no dependents aren't getting their Obama tax cut joe. He lied, and lies, and will keep on lying through his failure of one term.I'm going to enjoy this....

  39. SIV   17 years ago

    joe,

You fucking disingenuous retard.I've always said FICA and excise taxes are taxes. Regressive ones at that. You know your favorite kind of taxes because they screw over poor people so deadbeats like you can have government jobs

  40. Paul   17 years ago

So he doesn't give a shit about global warming or clean air?

Sorry Daschle, you fucked yourself on that one.

  41. joe   17 years ago

Only in your mind joe...You fucking disingenuous retard.I've always said FICA and excise taxes are taxes.

Bullshit. You spent the month before the election having a Plumber-gasm over Barack Obama's proposal - his "socialist" proposal, remember? - to provide a tax credit to people who, ahem, "Don't Pay Taxes."

Oh, Snap! You forgot about that whole episode, didn't you? That's why you sneered, "What, is he going to give them a tax credit," right?

  42. SIV   17 years ago

Oh, Snap! You forgot about that whole episode, didn't you?

Well if you are so certain there is a "search" function joe.Of course you will be disappointed to find that I didn't say anything of the sort.
You can't stand up to anyone elses argument so you make up positions they never held.LAME.
Why do you hate the poor joe? Their welfare is the only moral position your party takes and when it comes to policy fucks them over everytime.

  43. joshua corning   17 years ago

If Tom Daschle can make an American-built car run for 238,000 miles, maybe he SHOULD be appointed to high office.

Wow joe still lives in 1986...no real surprise there.

My 1995 f-150 has 210,000 miles and I treat it like shit.

  44. joshua corning   17 years ago

Palin's husband claims his hobby, you know the snowmobiles, is a business which lost $10,000 last year.

Snowmobile sales in Alaska is not a business?

Lucky his "hobby" was not selling cars....they did even worse in 2007 and 2008.

Is someone faking joe posts again....cuz he seems more idiotic then usual.

  45. joe   17 years ago

Don't be ridiculous, this is totally the real joe.

  46. John Collins   17 years ago

LOL< there is just nothing quite like kicking a man while he is down now is there! LOL

  47. SIV   17 years ago

Damn, was I trolled by the fake joe?

  48. joe   17 years ago

Wow joe still lives in 1986...no real surprise there.

My 1995 f-150 has 210,000 miles and I treat it like shit.

I know, I know, it's a cheap shot. Less and less true every day.

That joke's expiration date is coming fast - that's why I'm using it up now!

  49. joe   17 years ago

Snowmobile sales in Alaska is not a business?

But he wasn't a salesman. He just liked to race them.

Oh, look, corning just accused me of being an idiot for knowing what I'm talking about. Again.

  50. Seamus   17 years ago

Wow joe still lives in 1986...no real surprise there.

You mean joe wakes up every morning and has his day ruined by the realization that Reagan is in the White House--after getting elected for a second term--and that Antonin Scalia is going onto the Supreme Court, with Rehnquist moving up to Chief? Cool. (I suppose he'll be getting some consolation from the recapture of the Senate in November's elections.)

  51. joe   17 years ago

I thought it was a Duran Duran reference.

Doh doh doh doh the Re-Flex doh doh doh doh the Re-Flex...

  52. Paul   17 years ago

And clearly if Daschle still drives the same car for so many years, he's contributed $0 to the workin' man. The UAW is trying to provide people with healthcare and benefits, and Daschle is willing to let that wither on the vine.

  53. BT6   17 years ago

"Is someone faking joe posts again....cuz he seems more idiotic then usual."

Remember that medications lose their effectiveness as the body builds up a tolerance for them.

Joe's doctors are waiting to hear back from the drug company to see if they can boost the dosage even higher above the maximum, while his attorney is trying to prevent his becoming competent to stand trial.

  54. BT6   17 years ago

Oh, BTW, joe...snowmobile RACING is a business, too...

I'm surprised that someone as racist as you didn't know everything related to the word "race"...

  55. joshua corning   17 years ago

But he wasn't a salesman. He just liked to race them.

And he was/is a partner in a dealership.

Yes joe, you are an idiot.

  56. Amazing Grace!   17 years ago

    Fuck! Oh my god!
