Turns out Joe the Plumber is unlicensed and owes back taxes. I'm starting to hope the week ends with him endorsing Bob Barr.

Update: A few readers mistook this post for a part of the two-minute hate now unfolding at some of the pro-Barack blogs, so I'll try to be clearer: I'm for unlicensed plumbers. When I lived in South Baltimore, I found two kinds of competent handymen: the ones who advertised in the yellow pages, charged a lot of money, and signaled that they were trustworthy by being formally certified, and the ones who mostly stuck to their neighborhoods, didn't charge much, and signaled that they were trustworthy via word of mouth. (I also encountered a company that informed us its roofers were licensed but was lying. But that's a tale for another day.)

Anyway, the idea of the post was that a guy who doesn't like taxes or occupational licensing might want to vote for the Libertarian. Though after today, I wouldn't blame Joe if he decided to skip this whole voting business altogether.

Good recall on the SCHIP family, Kolohe, but remember they were just a bit more involved than this guy, given the fact that the Dems trotted out the kid to deliver the response to a weekly presidential radio address. This guy asked a question of a presidential candidate, got a bullshit answer, then was picked up by right wing media and pretty much used by the McCain campaign without his consent. The Frost family was investigated by bloggers (with some incorrect info), then defended by the media. Joe the Plumber was investigated by the media, then defended by bloggers.

I’m not a licensed electrician, but I work for people fixing their electrical issues all the time. So what, what’s the big deal? I’m safe and I can prove it.

Licensing of skilled tradesmen has its benefits and drawbacks. On one hand you have to enter yourself into state databases, which can EASILY be abused by competition that has inside connections (how many times do we read about these kinds of abuses in the news?)… Kinda scary. On the other hand, I can’t say I’m licensed like a licensed electrician can. When I show potential clients my portfolio and list of references they usually don’t care.

A common gimmick of politicians, used to let them us “common folks” know that they rub elbows with “our kind” is to put the name of some “real person” in their stump speeches. I suspect you are big and smart enough to actually know that. I also suspect that you actually would agree that it is a cheesy thing to do, appealing to a pretty low denominator (I mean, why not simply say “your policy will have negative effect x” rather than “you know, I met joe six-pack who is a god fearin’ [fill in the blank] and your plan will have negative effect x on him”).

I think people ought to be disturbed by the fact that this guy did nothing beyond ask Obama a few unconfortable questions and is now having his life drug out by a hostile media. If could not mean a variety of policies which are designed to in many ways affect wealth/income distributions. You know, like the G.I. Bill (horribly unpopular bit of communism, that), college student loans/grants, tax cuts for most folks paid for with tax raises for the wealthy….

Shit, “spreading the wealth around” could be effectuated just by ending a ton of the bullshit rent-seeking that goes on in our government today which give many already wealth interests even greater advantages in bilking ordinary folks.
