DHS Secretary: Illegals "Really Degrade" the Environment
Here's Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff yapping away in favor of a fence along the U.S.-Mexico border.
"Illegal migrants really degrade the environment. I've seen pictures of human waste, garbage, discarded bottles and other human artifact in pristine areas," Chertoff said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "And believe me, that is the worst thing you can do to the environment."
It's a funny thing: You stretch out the possible points of entry across a desert for desperate people who are traveling northward to work, you make sure there isn't any water or Johnny-on-the-Spots, and the next thing you know, those bastards are junking up the joint!
More from Chertoff here (via Breitbart.com).
Oh, and how's that wall coming anyway?:
The head of the agency that oversees the Border Patrol said Wednesday he cannot promise to meet President Bush's goal of completing a Southwest border fence when he leaves office in January.
The plan calls for finishing building 670 miles of fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border by year's end; so far, 344 miles are complete. But Ralph Basham, commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, told lawmakers he only could assure that the remaining portions of fence would be under contract or under construction when the Bush administration is over.
He also said the agency needs an additional $400 million to complete the project. Basham cited higher costs for fuel, steel and labor.
"We face many challenges in achieving our goal," Basham told the House Homeland Security Committee….
Since 2006, Congress has set aside $2.7 billion for the fence. But there's no estimate how much the entire system—the physical fence and technology—will cost to build, let alone maintain.
The technology portion has run into problems. It once was billed as a relatively easy plan to use off-the-shelf technology to help federal agents spot illegal crossers. When a GAO investigator toured a stretch of the "virtual fence" three months ago, it took 45 minutes to get the surveillance system up and running. The system includes towers with radar, cameras and communications equipment.
I'm just skylarking here, but I'm curious as to whether building a fence in the middle of nowhere disturbs those pristine areas Chertoff seems so worried about? More here.
reason writes a lot about immigration. Especially how it's a good thing and why there should be more of it. Read our archive here.
Earlier this year, Drew Carey and reason.tv tallied up the "the costs of securing our Southern border" by building that there border wall that is taking so long to build and doesn't seem to work even where it is up and running.
The short answer is: The costs are high, the benefits low, and the implications are absolutely antithetical to just about everything that America stands for. Watch the slightly longer answer in video form by clicking below.

If you want to truly feel the hate for our insane immigration platform, just get involved with a foreigner. Having the constant threat of them being forced to leave the country is a special kind of torture that you will savor for years. Particularly fun is going through Customs coming back into the country. I recommend getting in the non-US citizen line with them to really live the experience.
It's all those beans they come over here and eat. They wait until they are on the bus or in an elevator to relieve themselves.
just get involved with a foreigner.
Sorry, I don't date litterbugs.
"reason writes a lot about immigration. Especially how it's a good thing and why there should be more of it."
By all means - America should capitalize on the fact the people from abroad want to come here and contribute to the economy and the culture. That's why we should continue to have broad *legal* immigration.
That's not the same as quasi-officially winking at illegal immigration. Opposing illegal immigration doesn't have to mean wanting a federal employee database or other tyrannical, unconstitutional horrors. It just means a good faith effort to enforce the laws we have, while allowing a comparatively pain-free process for valuable immigrants to come in legally. I'm partial to the idea that immigration preferences (at the least) should go to someone who can find a sponsor who gives sureties that the immigrant will be law-abiding and stay off the dole. That would, to a considerable extent, shift the cost of criminal and welfare-sponging immigrants onto the people who sponsor them, rather than foisting the costs onto states and localities as under the present non-system.
Did anyone see the recent Atlantic story that pointed out the obvious (but could not dare be said in public) - the parasitic underclass that lives in public housing is responsible for most of the violent crime in the cities (Memphis was used in the article)?
To have a story like that appear in an enlightened liberal mag like Atlantic is astounding. Not letting political correctness get in the way of facts isn't exactly the strong point of progressives. If I was a betting man I'd have guessed it much more likely that Reason would publish something like that. Instead we get tripe on how all the underclass Mexicans are actually hard working productive members of society, and don't worry about human nature and the "undocumented" taking advantage of the welfare system.
Open borders is pretty much the only principled libertarian stand Reason seems to take, and yet it's foolish when you have massive redistribution of wealth from the productive to the parasites.
Of course, the fence is stupid. But protecting the borders and (what's left of) our economy is not.
"The worst thing you can do to the environment"? Really?
He scores high on the hyperbole, but I can think of dozens of things the government itself does, right offhand, that are worse for the environment.
This is not a prediction, it is a guarantee.
Five years after completion, the fence will be so riidled with holes, both physical and surveillance, it will be widely recognized as a complete waste of money.
This jus in. Illegal immigrants have the knowlegdge, desire and tools to go over, through and under the dumbass fence.
More nonsense from the Corporate welfare pimps.
Anyone want to talk about the Diversity Recession??
It's a funny thing: You stretch out the possible points of entry across a desert for desperate people who are traveling northward to work, you make sure there isn't any water or Johnny-on-the-Spots, and the next thing you know, those bastards are junking up the joint!
If you think that their manners improve any after they get over the border, you've obviously never lived near a border town. Respect for other people's property isn't their strong suit, desperate or not.
A little-known fact about Drew Carey is that he is a big soccer fan. He owns part of the Seattle Sounders, a Major League Soccer expansion team.
He wants more soccer fans to move to the US so they can watch the US national team beat the Mexico national team in person.
Been there. Never again.
The US government doesn't do "good faith effort" or "pain free process" very well any more.
This is now going to go down as "another environmentalist hates immigrants." Because whenever somebody uses the environment as a pretext for attacking immigrants, it means they spent last summer harrassing whaling ships with Greenpeace, or something.
This border fence sounds about as effective as our missile defense system. Mmmm... pudding.
"If you think that their manners improve any after they get over the border, you've obviously never lived near a border town. Respect for other people's property isn't their strong suit, desperate or not."
Ay, unfortunately, in my experience, this isn't too far from the truth...
If you want to truly feel the hate for our insane immigration platform, just get involved with a foreigner.
Seeing a friend detained in immigration jail for 3 weeks because he took a ferry ride from one part of Washington state to another works, too. They "randomly" asked for his papers and not those of his white fiancee They had to spend their wedding money on expensive immigration lawyers. The dude never committed a real crime in his life. His parents brought him here when he was a kid.
And, "degrading the environment"? It never occurred to these douchebags that the bad laws are causing the adverse effects?
I love the smell of nativism in the morning.
They "randomly" asked for his papers and not those of his white fiancee
And you guys are Canadian. Just think what it must be like for someone whose country isn't right next door with 95% shared culture and language.
I've seen pictures of human waste...And believe me, that is the worst thing you can do to the environment."
It's because they're following the example of the Pope going in the woods. Damn Papists.
And you guys are Canadian.
Nah, this was a Guatemalan friend of mine & his Yankee sweetie. It was definitely straight up racial profiling, because the didn't ask for the papers of anyone else on the ferry. And who the fuck brings their birth certificate when they're not leaving the country, anyways?
The USCIS goons were on the ferry because one of the ferry routes goes to Victoria, BC, though.
Cue the L-Dub rambling in 5...4...3...
pardon my blathering on.
The local chicken plants employ a high percentage of hispanics. It used to be the blacks that had these jobs. I can't speak knowledgably as to the number of illegals employed. I do know that the mexicans are very reliable and productive and good for the company. I have a close friend that owns a construction business. After struggling for years with his help, he learned spanish, hired a buncha Mexicans and they are all making good money now and his business is growing. It is my opinion that AFDC and medicaid and food stamps have done more harm to the local economy than illegals. The mexicans are simply taking the jobs that Americans no longer find necessary to do.
Nah, this was a Guatemalan friend of mine & his Yankee sweetie
"I've changed. People change. Changes...I'm not the same Jerri Blank who informed on those blind orphans. I'm not the same Jerri Blank who revealed the hiding place of those Guatemalans...such as yourself. And I'm not the same Jerri Blank who took a crap in the Fleishmann's holly bushes...last night."
It was definitely straight up racial profiling, because the didn't ask for the papers of anyone else on the ferry
Well, of course. That's easy for the goons. They're fucking cops. Don't bring a birth certificate, bring doughnuts as bribes.
I do know that the mexicans are very reliable and productive and good for the company.
Exactly. Like the guys you see (at least in my neck of the woods) standing outside Home Depot in the morning. I get the sense that they're not standing there all day*, and that people who need workers pay them a wage they're willing to accept. Like magic!
*And, anecdotally, the percentage of homeless dudes in my city who are visibly Latino is close to nil. But it definitely, definitely makes sense to rally the troops against people working for a living and not stinkily harassing me on the streets.
A wall along the border would be OK if we had a gate in it every 1/2 mile. If we're going to ask immigrants to come through to door instead of over the fence, we should build more doors.
"If you want to truly feel the hate for our insane immigration platform, just get involved with a foreigner. Having the constant threat of them being forced to leave the country is a special kind of torture that you will savor for years."
Not that it's any of my business but, why didn't you just marry her?
I have had friends do this, but then gain, it was 10-15 years ago. Perhaps, it is more difficult to get away with now?
Changes...I'm not the same Jerri Blank who informed on those blind orphans.
Yet another show I'm waiting for on Netflix. I should really get more channels.

"If you didn't have adult-onset diabetes, I wouldn't mind giving you a little sugar."
"Oh, Gob, you could charm the black off a telegram boy."
Not that it's any of my business but, why didn't you just marry her?
It was discussed. I didn't because I wasn't sure it was going to work out. Guess what? I was right. Besides, a marriage is not a silver bullet, there are still plenty of hassles. She got her H1B in the nick of time and that was that.
Yet another show I'm waiting for on Netflix. I should really get more channels.

Making Money During an Economic Downturn
1. Start the war on marijuana to keep out those dirty brown people trying to take our jobs during the depression and it is costing us in reduced wages from drug testing and locking up honest tax paying citizens.
2. Set up a border fence to keep out the dirty brown people and it is costing us a lot of money to build and causing environmental degradation from the illegals and the constuction of a linear object in the middle of a desert interfering with wild life patterns and ecosystems.
3. Profit for all the right people.
"He also said the agency needs an additional $400 million to complete the project. Basham cited higher costs for fuel, steel and labor."
Why don't they just hire illegals, that makes everything cheaper, just like in the housing industry. / snark
No help from Obama or McCain against the occupational army of illegal immigrants. The economy is staggering, but they still insist in importing impoverished illegal cheap labor. Now it is up to 'THE PEOPLE' to let their voices be heard and their angry frustration.
Keep Pressure on Senate to Pass E-Verify Reauthorization; No House Vote Held on Foreign-Worker Bills
Please contact your Senator through the Capitol Switchboard (202-224-3121) and ask him/her to pressure Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to allow a vote this week on H.R. 6633, the House-passed E-Verify reauthorization bill. The E-Verify program will die in November if Congress does not reauthorize it before Members leave for the election recess on Friday.

A buddy of mine in the office is married to a Phillippines national and they have a infant son (born in US military hospital). The wife and son are in the PI while he is still negotiating the intricit maze of two different cabinet dept bureaucracies (DHS & State) to get her permanent resident status. He's been working on this for a year (the wife was able to get here on a tourist visa for about 3 months of that) Interestingly, the DHS stuff was rather straightforward and is basically done; it's the State deparment part which is currently stuck in a vortex of 'don't call us, we'll call you*
*and to deter people calling they have a system where they charge about $9 (per call) to talk to a live person about your case.
Yes, they are a travesty.

Unless you can measure millipatriots? But then, wouldn't you be using that commie metric system?
And don't get me started with what's about the only option left for many: the "visa lottery". Who knows what byzantine incantations to Cthulhu you have to make to in order to get your country on the favored list; all I know is my ex-partner is in a country that gets screwed every year.
That is the funniest thing I ever read! The DHS worried about the environment?!?! Ha! Then why circumvent the environmental details in stormwater runoff caused by the fence being built? They don't even attempt to make sense. You can make the fence a mile high, people will still dig under it, cut through it, or whatever else they have to do to put food on the tables back home. If you've ever met an illegal immigrant who is feeding their entire family back home, while living on $2 per hour himself, and spending countless years away from his family...you might look at the matter a little differently.

Buzzm1,
Which of the following is the point you are trying to make?
1. The number of people who have their rights to travel, reside, and work abrogated by the government is truly staggering.
2. If the extensive border control resources being wasted like this could be put to use stopping actual threats from entering the country, we would all be much better off.
3. Both (1) and (2).
We don't need more people in the USA.
If we do want more people, we want highly trained and specialized ones, not those escaping a failing third world country.
Would any of you move to Mexico?
Immigration is an environmental crisis mainly because it creates a population both in the new and old nations.
By the way, even though I'm a pathetic neo-Nazi troll, I still like to pay 19-year-old Mexican boys to shit on my chest.
Hey, Conservationist, I love doing that, too! It's the only thing the beaners are good for.
Migration control. Conservative's favourite unenumerated power.
Conservationist --
"Would any of you move to Mexico?"
I would if they'd let me. You have any idea how hard it is to legally immigrate to Mexico? I've been waiting fifteen years for approval.
