Middle Class Warfare

Democrats used the phrase "middle class" more tonight than Rudy Giuliani says "9/11" in a week. They said "middle class" more than Ralph Nader says "corporate" in a month. And yet there was L.A. political hack Xavier Becerra talking about some "forgotten middle class," as if the repetition junkies at the DNC speech-approving shop hadn't been MC-ing the whole damned night. But leave it to Rahm Emanuel to win the prize (a world record, maybe?) for most middle-classing in a two-paragraph span:

The truth is, the Bush crowd has been giving the middle class a thumping. This November, the middle class is going to give it right back. This election comes down to a simple question: do we want four more years of Bush-McCain or do we want the change we need?

There is only one candidate from the middle class, that understands the middle class, and that can deliver the change the middle class needs: Barack Obama. A strong economy depends on a strong middle class. But George Bush has put the middle class in a hole and John McCain has a plan to keep digging that hole with George Bush's shovel.

Government, regardless of the party in power, never forgets the middle class. The U.S. federal government exists solely to take the middle class so as to pay for programs for the middle class, after taking its cut, of course.

One thing the Democrats don't understand is that no one in the middle class identifies themselves that way. Middle class folks think of themselves as the future upper class.

Gilbert, that is where you are wrong. The private exchange of goods and services may have created wealth and improved the lot of every person it touches, but it was a politician's idea to distinguish people according to artificial economic classes and set them against one another.

That's true enough - but I was speaking about the economic reality of what created each individuals wealth and/or income level - not the phony political construct of what created it.
