Meanwhile, in Zimbabwe
Before we all absolve Hillary Clinton of her campaign sins, let's remember: She compared the failure of the Democratic National Committee to retroactively restore her delegates in the uncontested Florida and Michigan primaries to the elections in Zimbabwe. And Human Rights Watch has a report out about those elections.
[HRW] said it had documented at least 36 politically-motivated murders and 2,000 victims of a campaign of killings, abductions, beatings and torture by the ruling ZANU-PF party of President Robert Mugabe.
It said more than 3,000 people had fled the violence which began after March 29 elections in which ZANU-PF lost control of parliament for the first time and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai beat Mugabe in the presidential race.
…
The report said the government had incited and perpetrated the violence to intimidate and punish opposition supporters and had failed to prosecute those responsible, who included the security forces, liberation war veterans and youth militia. The violent campaign "has extinguished any chance of a free and fair presidential runoff," HRW said.
Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangarai is being detained for the second time since the first election, which he won, in the run-up to the June 27 run-off, which will almost surely be stolen again.

This is also a reminder though that we're lucky to live in a country where the Clinton campaign is considered dirty.
Hillary would do a lot better next time if she figured out how to shut her fucking mouth.
With Mugabe in his 80s, he will probably be dead soon, which is good.
Unfortunately, there are more ZANU-PF thugs ready to take his place.
Poor Zimbabwe.
The faction of the MDC that had broken off a couple years ago announced it would join back with Tsvangarai for the election. Soon after this was announced, the faction leader was arrested.
If only Hillary could have convinced Zimbabwe's superdelegates to support her, she'd have the nomination now!
How did Mugabe come to power in the first place? I'm a little poorly-informed on this point, and too lazy to Wikipedia the information.
economist,
There was a revolution in, I believe, 1980, where the ZANU-PF party kicked a white supremacist government out of power. Mugabe's been in power ever since, and as bad as the prior govt had been for native Africans, ZANU-PF has undoubtedly proven even worse.
Hillary's (partly) successful quest to get Florida and Michigan delegates seated should spell the end for Iowa and New Hampshire. If there is no penalty for states breaking the rules on primary dates then it's basically a free for all and these 2 sorry states lose their tremendously out-weighted importance.
Mugabe came to power as part of a "Peace Deal" brokered by the UK to end white minority rule.
< snark > It ended oppression. < /snark >
Oddly enough, the first half of Mugabe's rule wasn't too bad. Apparently his wife was a pretty astute woman and kept his more idiotic impulses in check. Then she died, and Mugabe began fucking things up royally.
NPR was reporting this morning that there was a significant re-immigration to Zimbabwe due to recent anti-immigrant violence in South Africa. There's some thought that these voters could tip the balance in the runoff in favor of the MDC.
So my question is, is the MDC actually likely to be any less fucked up than Mugabe? It's hard to see how they could be worse, but I keep being unpleasantly surprised in these circumstances.
And US policy towards Zimbabwe should be ________________?
I don't have that answer. The west's record of improving the lives of sub-saharan Africans isn't exactly a stream of successes.
Another triumph of socialism over common sense.
Maybe we should bomb them with Hayek.
On the plus side, I'm a multi-millionaire thanks to the ten million dollar note I have in my wallet from Zimbabwe.
Then again, there is a five hundred million dollar (yes, $500,000,000) note for sale on eBay right now and the bidding is up to $5.13
