Ron Paul on Leno Tonight: A Preview
Ron Paul taped his second Tonight Show with Jay Leno appearance this afternoon in Burbank, California. Herewith, a preview report from memory. It will be airing tonight, wherever the Tonight Show can be found, and will doubtless be on YouTube forthwith.
Leno asked the crowd beforehand to please not loudly applaud Paul after every line--both because it made it look like they packed the audience with partisans (it was self-packed with Paul partisans) and because it disrupted the flow of his conversation.
The reason for having Paul on again today, Leno told him, was because the Fox News people excluded him from the debate, and Leno thought that wasn't fair. He commended Paul for being so polite about something that would have, Leno said, really pissed him off, saying Paul was "screwed" as an obviously viable candidate excluded for no reason.
Paul said he was able to get no explanation from Fox for it, speculated they are a bit afraid of his ideas since they are so in bed with the GOP establishment which Paul is a standing reproach to since he still stands for the Constitution and they don't (he got annoyingly vague in this part in explaining precisely where and why he was true-blue and the rest of the Republican field is not). Paul joked (I think it was a joke) about suing Fox over their violation of their "fair and balanced" slogan but acknowledged their property right to exclude him if they wished.
The rest of it was a quick, sympathetic tour through Paulism. Paul brought up monetary policy, acknowledged he's seen as unbearably eccentric for believing sound money should be gold based but noted the Founding Fathers believed the same thing. The truly kooky thing, Paul said, was giving politicians the power to essentially make more money when they needed it. The recent decline in the dollar's value relative to other currencies is beginning to show people that we need to grapple with monetary policy. He declined to say he'd name any current GOP contender as his running mate until they proved to him they'd sincerely changed their views to match his. He noted he sent Rudy a package of books on the causes of terrorism and that Rudy has apparently not read them.
Leno asked if he blamed the U.S. for 9/11, and Paul noted that the blame lay with the "thugs" who did the deed, but that we needed to understand the role of U.S. foreign policy in motivating them--in the same manner that investigating motive was important in solving a murder. He ended his antiwar spiel noting that we can't afford more interventions (saying he fears that Pakistan and Iran might be next) and gave a slight pander in saying that we should spend the trillion we are spending on war on (I paraphrase) the needs of people here--not, in a more hardcore libertarian fashion, on allowing the money to stay in the hands of its earners.
Asked if any Dems appealed to him, he spoke of his congruence on foreign policy and civil liberties with his pal Dennis Kucinich, but did note they disagreed on economic policy.
It was a decent performance overall but I think he failed to sharply explain the full range of his differences from his opponents. You would know of him from this appearance only that he was against the war, against inflation and paper money, and for the Constitution. Maybe that's enough.
I failed, alas, to nab Paul in the scrum outside as he was getting in his car (surrounded by mostly young fans vying for photo ops) to fly back to New Hampshire. I was unable, then, to get any personal reactions to the Kirchick New Republic piece criticizing him (apparently--it's not publicly available yet, so I haven't read it) for anti-MLK and anti-gay slurs from years back. For more on which, see Matt Welch's post below (with loads of other reason Ron Paul links.)
As the squad of Writer's Guild picketers outside NBC's studio reminded me (with some signs playing on pro-Jay feeling by announcing that "Jay wants his writer's back" and others baldly calling Leno a scumbag for going back on the air without them), I'll now never be able to say that I never crossed a picket line. I don't recall if I lived in that state of grace before today.

Enjoy Lego.
He really needs to explain very clearly to the public that they're being robbed through the monetary system. This issue effects everybody in the worst way, and if they wake up to it, they'll become properly outraged and active.
"I'll now never be able to say that I never crossed a picket line. I don't recall if I lived in that state of grace before today."
I remember during the grocery strike a few years ago, I'd see all those picketers out there and it made me feel so bad.
...I always tried to stop and buy something.
Ken
The next time you cross a picket line, I hope somebody brains you.
Good link Ali.
I don't think Leno is the place to start really getting deep into policy. I hope he peeked some peoples interest and they go online for a closer look.

The next time you cross a picket line, I hope somebody brains you.
First We Come for the Trade Unionists.......
Once I happened by a picket line outside of construction site on the way to work. I was eating an apple. A guy told me to throw what was left at the site. I said I didn't want to be arrested and offered him the chance to throw my apple. He demurred, claiming he had a bum back. I went on my way.
Make with that story what you will.
"gave a slight pander in saying that we should spend the trillion we are spending on war on (I paraphrase) the needs of people here--not, in a more hardcore libertarian fashion, on allowing the money to stay in the hands of its earners."
To be fair, if he didn't mention a timeframe this could mean a trillion bucks of libertarian-approved spending over a long period of time.
To honor Martin Luther King and to belie the image that Paul and Paultards are racist, I will be donating $100 on Jan. 21, MLK Day.
I'll also be donating a Benjamin on Jan. 17 which is Ben Franklin's birthday.
Da Do Ron run run, da do Ron run.
Ron Paul is a "top tier" patriot... http://truthalert.net/Republican%20Presidential%20Candidate%20Rankings.htm
"He demurred, claiming he had a bum back."
"Jay wants his writer's back"
Coincidence? I think not.
@mike
your site loses all credibility when you call alan keyes "...highly articulate, energetic, and intelligent." and "...there could be a place for him in the Paul administration." If that nut alan keyes ever showed up on a official draft list of possible Ron Paul appointees he would lose my support.
UH OH! Be careful about calling Alan Keyes "articulate" lest you want The New Republic to write a feature article about you.
a trillion bucks of libertarian-approved spending over a long period of time.
Reperations for those unlawfully deprived of property by the Emancipation Proclamation would be a good start.
Gods... I remember the first time I crossed a picket line... it was over a decade ago...
Of course... they were a construction union upset that a store wasn't using union labor to remodel... and I worked as a floor person at the store... the mess the union people made destroyed any sympathy I had for them.
And I have to weep about Ron Paul saying good things about Kucinich... I think I'd vote for a head of cabbage over Kucinich... it would do a better job of representing me... and not embarrass me so much...
Nephilium
as an interesting lead-up to this, I was watching Anderson Cooper and the WHOLE SHOW there were hundreds of people with RP signs behind him, sometimes chanting.
I have no issue at all with anyone crossing a picket line. If you're not a party to a negotiation, why take sides in it?
-jcr
I'll now never be able to say that I never crossed a picket line.
Good for you. Screw the crybabies of the Writers' Guild, and their Sarandonista fellow travelers. Right To Work, baby!
He really needs to explain very clearly to the public that they're being robbed through the monetary system. This issue effects everybody in the worst way, and if they wake up to it, they'll become properly outraged and active.
I think you are very right about that. I recall that during Bill Clinton's first campaign the strategy was to emphasize the ecconomy and that this was widely given credit for his winning the election. Remember it's the ecconomy, Stupid? People still vote their pocketbooks.
this article was posted at 9:11 pm - cute!
Leo! Darn you're right!
The problem in getting the message out is that most Americans are too stupid to understand/connect foreign policy to monetary policy equating to freedom and liberty. I can't blame Dr. Paul for trying, but it's ultimately the people to figure it out...that's what scares me.
I failed, alas, to nab Paul in the scrum outside...
That sounds a little masochistic.
"The next time you cross a picket line, I hope somebody brains you."
By the looks of 'em, you wouldn't think they'd have anything to teach me, but I'm not one to judge a book by its cover.
...or maybe you mean next time, I should bring my chess board?
Heh, Kumon-Topome. That's a great wedding.
Thank you Jay Leno!
It is so nice and refreshing to hear straight talk from the un-politician, Ron Paul. At the Fox PRO-WAR forum on Sunday, with the exception of McCain, all the liars (excuse me flip-floppers) pointed out the flips and flops of the others. AND the one man present who was MOST sincere, namely McCain, is NOW against amnesty. .
Give me a break. .
At least with Ron Paul present on ABC Saturday & with Jay today, new ideas got discussed, like the economy, inflation, the declining dollar, the Federal Reserve, & we got to hear just how a few Islamo-Fascists are winning in their attempt to bankrupt the United States in foreign wars. (I am sure that Ron Paul did not phrase it that way!)
I might remind you that this is EXACTLY what Osama bin Laden predicted he would do, just like he said he bankrupted the old Soviet Union in Afghanistan. Does no one realize that Osama is telling us exactly what his intent is in his increasingly sophisticated communications? And that Bush, the impotent & incompetent, can NOT catch Osama even with annually hundreds of billions being spent on trying! With the economy heading down the toilet, Bush has only one hope, and that is to provoke a war quickly with Iran or Pakistan to distract people from domestic problems. Reminds me of March 2003 when we went into Iraq the first time! The Pro-War group would really love a war later this year when running against the Democratic candidate. Or so they think.
Thank goodness that the NH Republican party had the sense to withdraw their support for the Fox farce. And thank goodness that Richardson is running on the Democratic side because the other top 3 democrats want to stay in Iraq through their term if elected, or so they have said most recently, but who can keep track.
When all is said and done, I am not really sure another war will really help the Republican candidate if all the candidates are pro-war! And no one pays attention to flip flopping on the issues. No one seems to care now if people are inconsistent. Is it because everyone does it and no one is consitent? What happens if one has a consistent candidate?
Picket lines were a big deal in the old days when the right to strike was not recognized by the government and a strike was only effective when it functioned like a boycott.
I watched the whole show and Ron Paul did a decent job. Anybody with an open mind, learning about him for the first time, I think would leave more curious.
Jay Leno was respectful and gentlemanly. And he might have even fanned the flames regarding the unfairness of excluding Paul from the debates. Paul, IMHO benefited more from tonight than he would have from last night.
I thought it was an excellent interview. Good job Ron and Jay!
I thought this was a pretty good interview. You don't want someone getting too heavy on a comedy show, and this was a good draw for people. Hopefully it's not too late.
At first I sympathized with the writers' not unreasonable demand for Internet residuals, but the WGA eventually did what all unions do: behave like bullies. They bullied Ellen DeGeneres, and now they're bullying Leno (whom I normally cannot stand) after cutting a deal with Leno's competition (David Letterman). If I were in Hollywood, I'd track down a WGA picket line just so I could cross it.
And, yes, I've crossed pickets before, back when that silly grocery workers union that likes to whine about Wal-Mart was picketing the store were I did my grocery shopping.
And here we have the violence inherent in the (labor union) system.
The good news is that Ron Paul was on Leno. The bad news is that he was on opposite the BCS national championship game. The good news is that LSU put it away early, once again making Ohio State the SEC's bitch (0-9 vs. the SEC in bowl games).

The next time you cross a picket line, I hope somebody brains you.
When I was a kid, my dad belonged to a trade union. When he became disabled, the union denied him his pension.
Some years later, several top leaders were indicted for corruption, pension
funds were being diverted to the mob.
I really wished someone would try to brain me, I have a lot of anger to take out on at least one union thug someday.
People are reporting some results from the primaries. Only a few from some small towns already. Does anyone know anything about that?
Franklin Harris, I noticed that too.
Ron Paul's viewership on the Leno show tonight might be down some in Bayou Country, but most of us who were watching the game, especially in Big Ten areas, had plenty of reason to switch over to Leno by the time he was on.
OSU lost? Great! M Go Blue!
If there was a strike picket line that coincided with the the US southern border, I think it would leave some people very confused.
Ah, picket lines. I won't go out of my way to cross a picket line. But if it stops me, as a consumer, from shopping where I get the best price and service, the whiny picketers will just have to live with it.
Dixville Notch & Hart's location. Totaling the votes from both on the GOP side, Ron Paul is in 4th place IIRC. McCain is winning far & away, and Obama similarly with Democrats. I think Giuliani may have gotten 1 vote, or maybe 0, I forgot.
Wow Jimmy, brains him? Nice typical union thug-chat.
Wow, you hope somebody brains him? Nice to see the thug mentality hasn't left the union.
I thought it was a good interview. I wanted to point out that I'm on ski vacay in Park City and while sitting at a kick ass pizza joint last night, I ran into some Paul supporters. They said they just arrived from Iowa and were travelling the country to spread the message. It made me warm and fuzzy and I could have probably walked back to my (^%$#^ non-smoking) hotel without a coat.
Ali,
I really appreciate the schadenfreude.
And here I was kinda sorta happy for scUM for beating the reptiles.
with some signs playing on pro-Jay feeling by announcing that "Jay wants his writer's back"
Did the signs really say that? I guess grammar is on strike as well.
The next time you cross a picket line, I hope somebody brains you.
Aah, the pure genius of that, like a pile of little inoculated arms chopped off.
At least Ron Paul is capable of giving answers & solutions. All we hear from other candidates is: "America wants change", " We need change", "We are financially broke", "Our borders are broke", " Our defense needs revamping" We need health care" blah -blah-blah.
They point all these things out, the crowd cheers them on but, they NEVER follow up with a solution. Has anyone ever heard another candidate (besides Ron Paul) give a straight answer & I am not talking about a scripted answer or a, avoid the question answer?
For liberty!
I saw the interview and I thought it went well, good of Jay to have Ron Paul on. Jay seemed to be acting a little odd, but no matter, he was helping the underdog get heard is what matters.
I recently became aware of Ron Paul and I am hoping he rises up in the polls. As rsforeman said, Ron Paul has answers, good ones that need to be heard and acted upon, and that's what America needs.
I think FOX and other news outlets are trying to use their position (as usual) to shape politics, but they must really be afraid of Ron Paul with the way they are acting. I can never understand why they keep candidates out of debates for being obscure or having low numbers, if they allowed those candidates into the debates most wouldn't be obscure. It's a Catch 22. (forgive the use of such an overused term, it fit)
All I know is that whoever the next President is, I hope to God they focus on domestic issues (like Ron Paul would), because the past few years our country has been going down the tubes while we watch the donkey and carrot show overseas.
Hmm... I watched and didn't notice. Care to clarify?
He was goosing Paul and really wanted him to lay it on concerning Fox it seemed to me.
If I were to venture a guess I'd imagine he's a closet Paul supporter and was trying to prompt a few homeruns.
I thought Leno was pro-war.
crimethink -
Leno was acting strangely about the war subject, and I couldn't tell if when he asked Paul if he blamed us for 911 if he was being sincere or simply a devils advocate (not quite the term I'm looking for, but you get the idea I hope)
Did the signs really say that? I guess grammar is on strike as well.
Give them a break, they're just writers, not...
OK, that doesn't make any sense. Never mind.
I thought Leno was pro-war.
Leno is pro-automobile. That's about the extent of it, really.
Did the signs really say that? I guess grammar is on strike as well.
No wonder the board doesn't want to pay them more money...
Jay wants his writer's back
Hey HEY! There's no need to drag personal relationships into this!
a slight pander in saying that we should spend the trillion we are spending on war on (I paraphrase) the needs of people here
Maybe he was referring to school vouchers.
OSU lost? Great! M Go Blue!
Ali, I always root for ANY Big Ten team in a bowl game, NCAA basketball and hockey tournaments and the college world series. When Bo died last year just before The Game, OSU fans showed only respect and class. I'll not forget that.
Jimmy, in a whole lot of strikes, I don't have a dog in the fight. I am not going to research the contract disputes to attempt to determine if the union's action is just or not. Since unions are do not always represent the best interests of their members, reflexively honoring all picket lines is just foolish.
Jimmy, do you advocate foolishness as well as violence?
Charlie = tool
Ali, I always root for ANY Big Ten team in a bowl game, NCAA basketball and hockey tournaments and the college world series. When Bo died last year just before The Game, OSU fans showed only respect and class. I'll not forget that.
And the joint Ron Paul support. Never have I seen OSU and UM fans uniting except for Ron Paul.
OSU lost? Great! M Go Blue!
*narrows eyes* I don't like you.
Jsub - agreed.
I saw the interview. I thought it was really good. My republican hating girlfriend liked him. If you really love America, how can you not like Ron Paul?
""""I couldn't tell if when he asked Paul if he blamed us for 911 if he was being sincere or simply a devils advocate """"
I think this is an issue kinda dogging Paul. I think Leno was giving him a chance to set the record straight and let RP talk about it on his terms without some former mayor crying about it.
I have no issue at all with anyone crossing a picket line. If you're not a party to a negotiation, why take sides in it?
Crossing the picket line essentially is taking a side in the issue....
No?
"Crossing the picket line essentially is taking a side in the issue....
No?"
It depends on how you frame the issue. One may be sympathetic to some labor cause or another, but asking that no one else earns a living until it gets straightened out is a bit much to ask.
Leno is a great interviewer, and he does a comedy-talk show instead of a news show. He stated up-front that he doesn't agree with Paul on everything, but then didn't become confrontational. He didn't interrupt, he let Paul speak. He asked reasonable questions instead of trying to trap his guest.
So far I've seen three high quality interviews: Leno, Stewart, and Colbert.
Strange how comedians are better at news than the journalists.
Didn't read all the posts, but here is the Vid of the appearance. (Apologies if someone has already posted it.)

Strange how comedians are better at news than the journalists.
At interviewing newsmakers, agreed. Broadcast journalists in 21st century America are too full of themselves. They try to make news rather than disseminate it. The trend has been going on for some time now. Because of that mindset, I have lost a lot of respect for TV news.
Ron Paul on Leno
I report. You decide.
