Did anyone notice the Republican candidates pretending not to understand what Time's Person of the Year story is about?

Oh, my goodness, how could they give such an honor to such a terrible person? It just shows the twisted values of the liberal media...

I freaking HATE people who play dumb to score political points.

  2. R C Dean   18 years ago

joe, who says they're playing dumb?

Did anyone notice the Republican candidates pretending not to understand what Time's Person of the Year story is about?

Well, ever since Time wimped out and did not declare Osama bin Ladin as the 2001 person of the year, I thought they abandoned their stance of "person who has most influenced world events for good or ill." (and last year's was just completely gimmicky)

And Hu Jiantao (or Chavez or Evo Morales, who were not listed) are more important in terms of possible world-historic changing figures. Really, what is Russia going to do that it hasn't done before?

And, just a matter of opinion granted, but Hu, Petraeus and Gore all had more impact this year *worldwide* than Putin did.

  4. Kolohe   18 years ago

oh even though also a matter of opinion, the cartoon ain't particularly funny.

joe, who says they're playing dumb?

    Not me.

  6. Gregory   18 years ago

The funny/frustrating thing is, I don't think this Don Black photo thing could even be spun to be any worse than that photo of Mitt Romney with some guy with a sign from months ago. (I don't remember what was on the sign, but it was pretty bad.)

  7. Gregory   18 years ago

How did I manage to post that on the wrong thread? Wow...

  8. joe   18 years ago

    Kolohe,

I'd say that even though an expansionist, imperialist, dissent-crushing Russian state with ambitions of global power is, ahem, not unheard of in pre-Putin history, his efforts to bring back the bad old days actually do represent something of world-historic importance.

  9. cynical bastard   18 years ago

Unfunny. Oppressive system created by Lenin and Co. (including the Iron Felix) is very much venerated in today's Russia.

And, incidentally, the only thing that's written on the tomb is ?????. Which produced at least one joke towards the end of Brezhnev's reign about the inscription being changed to ????? (a possessive form of Lyonya, a short form of Brezhnev's first name Leonid).

  10. R C Dean   18 years ago

his efforts to bring back the bad old days actually do represent something of world-historic importance.

Well, regional importance, anyway. Russia has approximately the GDP of Italy, catastrophic demographic trends, indefensible borders, and a decrepit industrial base.

I pay as much attention to Person of the Year as I do to the Miss America pageant.
Did Miss Texas win again? Yawn.

    thank u
