Tea Party '07: The View from DC
This morning the Ron Paul campaign crunched the numbers and announced a $6 million haul during yesterday's 24-hour Tea Party, the biggest one-day fundraising bout in political history. Last night least sixty-three people trickled into Garrett's, a Georgetown tavern, to stage a newfangled Tea Party for Ron Paul. It was Sunday, it was cold, and the Redskins were actually winning a game, but event organizers were still a little bummed. Patrick, a Virginia businessman ("My full name gets no hits on Google right now, and I'd like to keep it that way") explained that he only announced the event one week ago, and with a little more time "we could have gotten 100 people, easy."
It didn't feel like a small group. The youngish mob of Paul backers walked in between four rented rooms and two bartenders munching samosas and chicken satays and psyching each other up about the campaign. Shortly after I arrived, at 7, the TV monitor linked to RonPaul2008.com revealed the campaign's surge above the $16 million mark. Most of the crowd wasn't even looking until someone shouted the number; then, cheers and pumping fists. A few seconds later Charles Frohman collared me for an interview on Ron Paul Radio and I offered up insights on the campaign, like how I'd asked skeptical questions about the $12 million Q4 fundraising goal at an October press conference and felt a little sheepish about it.
In the less-crowded room, volunteers were illustrating cardboard boxes with the names of government agencies or services that they wanted President Paul to abolish. It was a local twist on throwing tea into the harbor: "Throw pork into the Potomac." The "Potomac," for our purposes, was the stretch of floor between the bench Patrick stood on and the crowd that listened to him give campaign updates.
"This is a huge night for Ron Paul!" he said, kicking off a string of short speeches. "I know we're not all libertarians in here"—some friendly booing—"but we're the only people right now who are growing the Republican Party, trying to save the Republican Party from itself."
Stephen Toglia got up to announce something that had been up in the air all week: "Ron Paul will be on the DC ballot!" He handled one of the "pork" boxes as he talked about how he wanted to give to charities and build up his community but the government wanted to redistribute his income. "So I'm gonna toss this into the Potamac," he said, flipping the box around to reveal the letters I.R.S. "Yeah, maybe you've heard of it." Toglia chucked the box at the ground and a small cluster of Paul fans went wild, stomping and ripping the box before kicking it hard at the wall.
Drew Arnold, a wirey, bearded Virginia video cartoonist, wanted to enlighten the crowd about his most-hated program. "It's called Rex 84," he said. "Look it up if you don't know about it. Because it basically means the government can lock any of us up for any reason." He flipped the box around to a drawing of the Washington Monument. "Did you know that the monument is six hundred and sixty-six feet high? Why do you think that is?" Some in the crowd looked at each other, rolling eyes, but Arnold was having fun. He flipped the box around to show a drawing of the Eye of Providence. "I want this off of our currency. I want you to kick the shit out of this thing!" The box flew into the crowd and Paul fans whaled on it like campesinos defiling the effigy of some hated dictator.
Other Tea Partiers were less obscure but just as dramatic. Standing at the bar during the box-tossing was Howard Wooldridge, a tall Texan cop who moseys around conservative, libertarian and pro-drug legalization events with a T-shirt that reads "Cops Say Legalize Drugs. Ask Me Why." He couldn't wear that shirt tonight, he explained, because he works for Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, it's their shirt, and they can't be seen as endorsing Paul. So he wore an alternate shirt that read "Legalize Drugs, Say Cops." By his side was his wife Karen Anderson wearing a Santa hat and a shirt of her own: "Moms Say Legalize Drugs."
Wooldridge's little speech blew the roof off. "How's that war on drugs workin' out for ya, D.C.?" he yelled. "I want to get rid of this"—his drug-war box—"so cops can go back to doing our jobs! Catching the bad guys! Child molesters! Guys who fly planes into buildings!" He raised the box, ready to hurl it down: "Let's kick some ass and make Ron Paul the first good president of the 21st century!"
Eight boxes met their fate before the organizers opened a big-money auction for a signed copy of A Foreign Policy of Freedom and an ersatz Liberty Dollar ("This is real money! It's also contraband."). Bidding started at $200 and ended when Libby, a professional driver ("taxis, BLS limos, anything with wheels") forked over $630. As the event died down organizers and attendees announced opportunities to organize-registering friends to vote, waving signs, plastering highways with REVOLution merch-and pointed out the Ron Paul cake that had been brought into the main room.
Normally the dessert part of the political party would end there, but not this time: A local chocolatier passed out samples of his organic bars and announced plans to build, then action off, a bust of Ron Paul. "I've contacted the campaign about it, but I guess they're busy." Right next to him a Marylander (Robert Broadus) was telling people about his "Ron Paul Republican" run for Congress and a volunteer from Virginia was tossing out plans to win the Feb. 12 primaries. Wackiness and strategy, side-by-side, fueled by $6 million.

What the hell is a Ron Paul cake? Is it shaped like him, tastes like him, what?
Robert Broadus? Any relation to Snoop Dogg?
Third!
This all still makes my head spin. I've been following libertarian politics for 20 years, and never even saw this Ron Paul Revolution coming. If you had told me a year ago that there would be girls baring their breasts for Ron Paul, and whooping crowds calling for the shutdown of the IRS, I woulda told you you were fucking crazy.
Ron Paul doesn't get it. To be a patriotic American, the idea is to rack up massive DEBT not massive INCOME. The majority of Americans will hate him for this. Wotta kook!
Ron Paul and the rest of us are about to blow the Established order away. Hang onto your hat.
CNN just metioned him. It was a 2 sentence piece. Immediatly before was a 45 second piece on McCain getting the endorsement of Lieberman.
Who is Ron Paul?
A has-been Neocon Israel-firster giving a reach-around to another has-been Neocon Israel-firster is far more important than a mandate for an America-firster.
Tell me again there is no bias in the media (national, not you guys) when McCain gets coverage this morning due to a few newspapers' endorsement of him when Ron Paul has over 100,000 supporters giving to his campaign this quarter! And where is the "financial" support from McCain or Huckabee's supporters?! Oh yeah, they really believe in their guy, leaving him stranded and begging for GAS money for their buses while Ron Paul supporters fly above it all on a BLIMP!
Absolutely amazing and disgusting at the same time related to this bias!
What do you mean, Jamie?
666 feet?
CNN just metioned him. It was a 2 sentence piece. Immediatly before was a 45 second piece on McCain getting the endorsement of Lieberman.
I hate to say it, because, obviously, I'm biased - but it does seem like this isn't getting anything near the attention it would rate if any of the other candidates had done it. Looking at the press from outside the libertarian community, it seems as if it's being deliberately ignored...
No matter, I suppose. At this point, Paul can afford to buy all the publicity he wants.
I will be taking a republican ballot in Illinois and voting for Ron Paul!!
I was being sarcastic, sage. The MSM depises Ron Paul.
Ugh. This is the kind of crap that really turns normal people off:
"Did you know that the monument is six hundred and sixty-six feet high? Why do you think that is?"
Hm, perhaps because it isn't.
Okay, I accept that fringe supporters shouldn't be held up as representative of an ideology or candidate. I get that you'll be attracting crazy people any time you honestly challenge such an established tradition and start to succeed. I even agree with most of RP's platform, and these fund-raising events are great stuff. But do they have to act as insane as David "Chemtrail" Kucinich supporters? And do they actually get a pass by the other attendees, as it seems from the article, not being called out as dishonest (at least in their facts and figures) lunatics?
@Jeff
And where is the "financial" support from McCain or Huckabee's supporters?! Oh yeah, they really believe in their guy, leaving him stranded and begging for GAS money for their buses while Ron Paul supporters fly above it all on a BLIMP!
Well, that's because Ron Paul's supporters are smart and rich. The other guy's supporters are poor and ignorant. And ugly, too! So there!
@Paul from Naperville
I will be taking a republican ballot in Illinois and voting for Ron Paul!!
That'll be 2 of us, anyway....
NPR spent several minutes this morning talking about how McCain is on a roll because papers in NH and IA endorsed him. Not a word about Paul.
I know, Jamie. So was I. I forgot to close the tag.
/sarcasm
Let's get started on the next "money bomb". I think it should happen on December 26th. This is the date that Washington crossed the Delaware to defeat the Hessian garrison at Trenton, New Jersey.
Drew Arnold, a Virginia video cartoonist with a winter cap, wanted to enlighten the crowd about his most-hated program. "It's called Rex 84," he said. "Look it up if you don't know about it. Because it basically means the government can lock any of us up for any reason." He flipped the box around to a drawing of the Washington Monument. "Did you know that the monument is six hundred and sixty-six feet high? Why do you think that is?" He flipped it around again to a drawing of the Eye of Providence. "I want this off of our currency. I want you to kick the shit out of this thing!" The blow flew into the crowd for the same rough treatment as before.
ROFLMAO! See Toasted Granite's comment.
Yes, interesting to see that this latest round of fund raising was so well represented by rational folks with a few bucks to burn.
Perhaps Mr. Arnold was confused by the small pyramid of aluminum that caps the Washington Monument? You know, like it was blocking the signals from his mothership?
Sadly, my favorites are being "suppressed". Still waiting to hear from the Ohio is not a real State crowd.
Sorry sage. Irony doesn't blog well. : )
Maybe the MSM will pay attention if Paul can reach double-digit status in any poll of voters.
I'm about 90% certain that in two months all of the money raised will turn out to have made no difference whatsoever.
Honestly, folks, I think we need to start helping out with the actual campaign rather than worry about raising money. Paul's people feel his war chest is sufficient to carry him through 2/5. If he's doing well by then the donations won't be much of a problem.
Who on here is doing something more? I am a PCO for a precinct in my county. It won't matter much until the state convention, but at that time it will be very important to have his supporters out in force. So take action!
Tell me again there is no bias in the media (national, not you guys) when McCain gets coverage this morning due to a few newspapers' endorsement of him when Ron Paul has over 100,000 supporters giving to his campaign this quarter
I wouldn't say this is bias as much as it is the MSM's mentality that one journalist's opinion is more important that the opinions of 100,000 American voters.
This mentality will prove to be its hubris, as the MSM is being overtaken by teh internetz...
"NPR spent several minutes this morning talking about how McCain is on a roll because papers in NH and IA endorsed him. Not a word about Paul."
NPR has interviewed Ron Paul and done numerous pieces on him. CNN's Glen Beck is going to have him on for a whole hour. We have to get our story straight on dark forces that will deny Ron Paul the victory that should be his. Claiming the media ignored him won't wash. Are the liberal, corporate-controlled media trying to undermine Ron Paul by giving his ideas exposure? Sounds a bit odd, but it might fly.
Jose,
He's at 11% in South Carolina, moving into 3rd place (but stuck @ 9%) in Iowa, and unfortunately stuck at 8-9% in New Hampshire. But that'll change soon enough...

The polls are definitely suspect at this time. For example, my wife and I both registered as republicans a few weeks ago after a lifetime of registering independent. We both plan to go to the caucuses for the first time and vote for Ron.
But the Republican party doesn't even know I exist yet. And the current polling practice is to identify people that have previously attended a caucus as a Republican, because they are the "most likely" people to attend the next caucus.
I don't know how many brand new Repbulicans are going to show up on the 3rd of January, but I imagine the party will get at least a small surprise.

Yea, but I believe the wrong attention will be drawn by someone getting stopped approaching the Washington Monument with a sledge hammer, followed by a private M-88 crew and the commander sticking out of the hatch wearing a three-corner hat (think Saddam statue in Baghdad a few years ago, with a little more drama).
How about a private poll asking people if they think the next President should abolish the IRS with his magic Skillcraft?
Iowan,
Meh, if 4 different polls come out and they all have the same or similar numbers, they're probably reliable.
HOWEVER - in re: the people who have never caucused before, I just saw that the Iowa coordinator said that as many as 2/3 of the people on Team Paul have never caucused, so they aren't included in the "likely voter" landscape. We'll see!
RC,
I so hope you are correct. Seeing those inconsiquentials who are out polling Fred Thompson get defeated by the Paulaholics will be AWSOME!

The ultimate question is who is going to head out into the cold and dark to caucus when they could otherwise stay home and watch the Orange Bowl.
The social conservatives that dominate the caucuses do so because they are dedicated and work the system for long periods of time. So a poll strategy based on finding previous caucus goers is going to find these people. These republicans are busy dumping Romney and elevating Hucklebee.
However, the Paul campaign is invigorating lots of people that either gave up on the system or never cared about the system (like me). I went to a coordination meeeting about 10 days ago in the middle of a snow storm and there were 50+ people there. Really amazing.
I think the Paul campaign is going to turn out a lot of first-time caucus goers. But I don't have a feel for how big that turn-out is going to be. I anxiously await the final outcome.

Make sure they remember to bring their pitchforks and flaming torches! Burning opponents in effegy is a biggie too.
Ugh. This is the kind of crap that really turns normal people off:

Hm, perhaps because it isn't.
Maybe the first and last public works project of the Dr. Paul administration will be adding 110+ feet to the monument before knocking it down? Is Mr. Arnold bucking for Secretary fo the Interior?
Make sure they remember to bring their pitchforks and flaming torches! Burning opponents in effegy is a biggie too.
My plans were limited to verbally abusing the moralizing, nanny-staters that are infatuated with Hucklebee. But I could be pursuaded into hauling a few garden implements to the caucus site.
Let's get started on the next "money bomb". I think it should happen on December 26th. This is the date that Washington crossed the Delaware to defeat the Hessian garrison at Trenton, New Jersey.
Nope, too soon. Plus us rich libertarians are too busy giving money to our servants on the 26th (boxing day). Humble proposal - Martin Luther King's birthday money bomb. Anti-war, pro-freedom, it could work.
"Ugh. This is the kind of crap that really turns normal people off"
Yes, as all candidates must endure, Ron Paul also suffers a few eccentrics in his parade.
But it's time to face reality here. A tiny handful of tin-foil hat conspiracy theorists is infinitely less troubling than the 40% or more of alternative candidates' tin-headed followers who are vocally and "votingly" insistent that Iraq was responsible for the 9/11 attack.
iowan,
I guess you would be the person to ask, but I saw something recently that said that the republican iowa causcus is just a "go and cast a secret ballot that is scored like a caucus" not a real caucus like the democrats do where everyone stands around in a room and then runs to different corners if there corner doesnt have enough people to count. True?
USAFV,
ROFLMAO!!!! I love you guys! 'Those people who disagree with me are all nuts, here I will invent a statistic to prove it'.
Thank you for making my day.
Thanks to Reason's Dave Weigel for covering D.C.'s Meetup Tea Party at Garrets in Georgetown last night. And thanks to http://www.RonPaulRadio.com for covering this event. Yes, a few crazies spouted off on some little-known problems with the CIA and other black ops. But most attendees were standard conservatives and libertarians, wanting nothing more than a return to republican government limited by a Constitution. Too bad Weigel's blog didn't leave that impression.
iowan and anyone else attending the Iowa caucus,
Don't forget to stick around after the voting for the candidates takes place if Ron Paul wins the local caucus. That's when the local party officials name the delegates to the convention. I can't remember if there is another delegate nomination after the local ones. If and this is a big if, the convention is brokered you don't want non Ron Paul supporters to be the delegates to the national convention as the delegates appointed by the local party bosses will be the first to jump ship. Be forewarned the local party officals won't want you to be there don't let them freeze you out.
HM,
That's when the local party officials name the delegates to the convention and begin a New England style lottery. Make sure you pick a good stone to ensure a pleantyful potato harvest next year.
Fixed 🙂
Charles Frohman,
Quit picking on Mr. Weigel. He did not chose the wackjobs who attended, but they did attend it seems.
Ron Paul the $6 million dollar man (the real reason Mitt keeps crying, soon all the other candidates will be joining him). Unfortunately it took segregationist Governor Wallace to reveal the truth that "there's not a dime's worth of difference between" Republicans and Democrats. The Democrats willingly went along with the War in Iraq, suspension of Habeas Corpus, detaining protesters, banning books like America Deceived (book) from Amazon, stealing private lands (Kelo decision), warrant-less wiretapping and refusing to investigate 9/11 properly. They are both guilty of treason.
Support Dr. Ron Paul and save this great nation.
True
Republican and Democrats do it differently (who'd a thunk that). The Democrats "require" viability. So if a candidate has less than 15%, the supporters must switch to an alternate candidate. The Republicans do not have such a requirement.
The first order of business will be to conduct a "straw poll". This is the number that gets reported in the media within hours. It is no more important than any other straw poll, but that is what all this chaos is about.
After the straw poll, the caucus elects delegates to the county convention. Those delegates will elect delegates to the state convention. Those delegates will elect the final delegates to the national convention.
As far as I know, there is no relationship between the straw poll preferences and the obligations of the delegates. For example, if one candidate gets 50% plus one representation in the caucus, they can theortically choose all the delegates to the county convention.
The real importance (to the nation anyway) is the straw poll. It either brings forth the obscure (Jimmy coming in second to undecided in 76), or it crushes the overhyped (dated dean, married kerry), or it validates conventional wisdom (and means nothing).
Normally, a bad showing in Iowa means the money dries up. Ron Paul could come in last, and it wouldn't change anything. But coming in somewhere in the top three, means "not a long shot anymore".
H man:
I plan to nominate myself as a delegate for the county convention. If I don't get elected, I plan to offer myself as an alternate. Apparently, it is common for many delegates to not show up at the county and state conventions, so alternates routinely get seated at those conventions.
From The Harris Poll? #14, February 18, 2005
47 percent believe that Saddam Hussein helped plan and support the hijackers who attacked the U.S. on September 11, 2001 (up six percentage points from November).
Ron Paul has his own city. Come and support it.
http://ron-paulcity.myminicity.com
Montag proving once again that he is a cunt.
Do you know what kind of nonsense I could get out of someone at a Hillary event?
What's more absurd: getting the height of the Washington Monument wrong, or thinking all heterosexual sex is rape?
Not to mention the fact that I personally guarantee you that at a Huckabee or Thompson event I could find many, many people who think the Earth is 6000 years old and that angels intervene in human life daily or that Jesus affects the outcome of high school football games. That is about 1 million times as stupid and insane as thinking that 9/11 was a conspiracy or that the Moon landing was faked.
And Rudy, well, Rudy supporters get their pitchforks out for art they think blasphemes. Personally I'd rather be associated with people who burn politicians in effigy than with people who want to burn art. That's just me though.
JsD,
LOL! Love the 2.8 year old poll of "do you believe the following". One of the simple tricks used to get the outcome the pollster wants.
Any polls on the actual % of Dr. Paul supporters believe 9/11 was an inside job, or any of the othe wackieness demonstrated at the Tea Party? When are you guys going to pull down the Washington Monument? Is the Pope still going to lay claim to the US?
Fluffy,
Love that discussion technique. Going to challenge me to a knitting contest or something?
Charles, I actually tweaked the post a little to reflect the feeling in the room during Drew Allen's speech. The room definitely was skeptical of it, growing more so as he talked about the dimensions of the Washington Monument, so I reflected that.
David Weigel,
Dang you man! My wishes have been dashed to bits by your revealing these new facts*.
*Unless you are being forced to make these comments under duress from 'the man', nit unlike the way Scott Thomas Beauchamp was threatened by Franklin Foer by having the job of Elspeth Reeve dangled over his head. It's okay Dave, just give us the nod and we will know what is going on . . .
Said it before, I'll say it again - Firefox + GreaseMonkey filter = troll. Montag's Edwierdo impression has gotten very tiresome.
LOL! Love the 2.8 year old poll of "do you believe the following". One of the simple tricks used to get the outcome the pollster wants.
Guy Montag,
Thanks for providing that link to a more recent poll, displaying that the US voter has wised up since then. It really butresses your point. Plus, we are all aware that the Harris folks are boobs in the polling business.
Again, thanks.
So, Guy Montag has decided to drop his Edward persona and just post under his real name? Interesting.
Hey, Guy, do you have a blog? Tell me about your blog.
Oh, and how do you feel about hybrid Chargers?
JsD,
You mean like this one from the same guys you quoted, but on 29 DEC 2005? Somehow the number you quoted as current for today dropped by over 50%: Twenty-two percent (22%) of adults believe that Saddam Hussein "helped plan and support the hijackers who attacked the United States on September 11."
WHAT ABOUT YOUR BLOG GUY? WE HAVE NOT HEARD ABOUT YOUR BLOG!
The Washington Monument is 555 1/2 feet tall. Far short of the conspiracists' claim. The Eye of Providence is a symbol of God watching over us, and is of Christian origin. In addition, while Freemasonry does use the eye in its imagery, it does not use the pyramid.
In the grand scheme of things, however, such conspiracy beliefs are minor, compared with such supreme wackiness as Eric Dondero claiming Giuliani to be the epitome of libertarianism.
In the grand scheme of things, however, such conspiracy beliefs are minor, compared with such supreme wackiness as Eric Dondero claiming Giuliani to be the epitome of libertarianism.
That is pretty wacky too. Why anybody would believe that RINO embraces anything libertarian I will never know.
Okay, since the poll numbers are all over the place, let's figure out something more concrete.
How much of that Tea Party money is 'fiat' vs. real?
My guess is 100% vs. 0%
I am so sick of hearing about "America Deceived"
it's an awful book
it's fiction
nobody bought this awful book
so the author/publisher started pimping a viral campaign on-line, one that cried "censorship!", to scare the rubes and maybe improve sales
jeez...
Ron Paul's campaign is going to ruin the economy! Dollars going to Ron Paul this month should be going to retail sales! We're doomed! And it's Ron Paul's fault!
Guy, from the link you provide.
Forty-one percent (41%) of U.S. adults believe that Saddam Hussein had "strong links to Al Qaeda."
Twenty-two percent (22%) of adults believe that Saddam Hussein "helped plan and support the hijackers who attacked the United States on September 11."
Twenty-six percent (26%) of adults believe that Iraq "had weapons of mass destruction when the U.S. invaded."
Twenty-four percent (24%) of all adults believe that "several of the hijackers who attacked the United States on September 11 were Iraqis."
Excellant work. Sanity's just breaking out all over. As of that date, only slightly more than ~ 1/4 of the American public were complete idiots. Only 2 1/2 years after we invaded. My faith in the American citizens current events intelligence is renewed.
T'mirshi Duween,
You mean that book is still available to purchase someplace?
Looks like the government can't even censor in a reliable manner.
(not to you, to those who say it was censored)
Where exactly can we find the government orders to remove this book from public view/consumption? Is ti is secret order like that secret 100 mpg fuel injector patent?
Hay Gai:
for figuring out something more concrete, how about, Semiparametric Approaches to the Prediction of Conditional Correlation Matrices in Finance
zat konkrete enough? or is that just plain ol' URKOBOLD wackiness?
Guy,
And I love you back for your ignorant response! No doubt now remains that you're not one of the "true believers" of the media's three ring propaganda machine. A tin-hat is too good for you and others of your ilk -- those mindlessly destroying America and its Constitution for no more than the personal gratification of a couple of carefully targeted sound bites thown in your direction.
By the way:
"In a New York Times/CBS News Poll in September (2007), 33 percent of the respondents said Saddam Hussein was "personally" involved. In June, when Princeton Survey Research, polling for Newsweek, asked if "Saddam Hussein's regime was directly involved in planning, financing or carrying out the terrorist attacks," 41 percent said yes."
Not that it matters to the likes of you who are much too busy tearing apart the fabric of America to notice you've destroyed the foundation you thought you were standing on.
JsD,
Forty-one percent (41%) of U.S. adults believe that Saddam Hussein had "strong links to Al Qaeda."
And, for a fact, they used to go to his hospitals and train in his country before 9/11 could lead a prudent observer to believe this. He opened Iraq as a rest stop to all sorts of terrorists.
Twenty-two percent (22%) of adults believe that Saddam Hussein "helped plan and support the hijackers who attacked the United States on September 11."
Glad I have yet to have to listen to any of those nuts online or in rality, as opposed to the "9/11 truth" crowd. Amazing that they are so visible in reality but invisible in polls.
Twenty-six percent (26%) of adults believe that Iraq "had weapons of mass destruction when the U.S. invaded."
As did 100% of his neighbors, plus there were those mustard gas shells discovered right before we liberated the country, plus the fact of his having used chemical weapons for some time after the liberation of Kuwait. Oh, never mind all of that.
Twenty-four percent (24%) of all adults believe that "several of the hijackers who attacked the United States on September 11 were Iraqis."
That one is odd, but still, most were of Saudi national origin and there has been no tie to the Saudi government. How the nation of birth is relevant to that I have no idea.
USAFV,
Stay right where you are. Some people need to talk to you.
For all the naysayers..
We had a tea party Ron Paul meetup last night in a small American town. We advertised it in our local paper and Oh. My. God.
Would you believe 50 people showed up???
Get this, half of the people dont use the internet!!! They all saw the ad and decided to join us. It gets better.
Most of the new folks were older. Die hard classic Republicans. People who were there for the Goldwater movement. They all are very proud of Dr. Paul and happy to see someone with some common sense motivating people. We also had the head of the Liberitarian party for the state come by.
He was shocked. He told us that he's never seen that much enthusiasm for a candidate. He said the LP couldnt get that much support at the state level.
No matter what happens Ron Paul has won. For 30 years he has been fighting to cut government spending, lowering taxes and defending our rights. His message has tapped into the American dream. You dont need to be asleep to believe it anymore because his message wakes you up!
Last night people from every walk of life, Young, old, Republican, Democrat, Independent, veterans and a couple conspiracy believers came out to support Ron Paul.
The point is this, Ron Paul is uniting Americans.
Thats something NO OTHER POLITICIAN IS DOING.
Im a proud Republican. Im a proud American. Im very proud of my support for Ron Paul.
Id like to leave with simple question for the people who dont support Ron Paul.
What do you fear from a Ron Paul Administration?
Nicholson,
Now that sounded very cool.
Congratulations, Guy Montag. You have been added to the J sub D list of posters that no longer require reading. You're in the company of Edward, Eric Dondero, and Lonewacko.
Should Guy post something witty or insightful, I'll have to rely on the kindness of strangers (reasonoids) to call my attention to it.
And Grand Chalups.
VM,
Try linking a little better next time, okay?
Thanks for the bleeding edge paper on theoretical portfolio management.
wasn't linking at all. and haven't read the paper (yet, probably won't) - but loved the title.
(and one of my profs reviewed it)
JsD,
Congratulations, Guy Montag. You have been added to the J sub D list of posters that no longer require reading.
Wow, all that for calling Giuliani a RINO.
"Wow, all that for calling Giuliani a RINO."
actually, that'll get DUNDEROOO mad at you.
(which might be just as terrifying. YMMV)
(which might be just as terrifying satisfying. YMMV)

How much longer will Ron Paul's support continue to be called fringe? Will we be called fringe when we are close to half or even a clear majority?
I seems to me that most other candidates being associated with small groups like the Council on Foreign Relations or the Bilderberg Group is kind of odd. They are the real fringe. Most Americans don't want what these FRINGE groups want and yet their candidates dominate the race and are called front-runners. What an upside down portrayal of politics.
People are figuring out that the only way to speak truth to the power of the corporate shills is to reach into their pockets and give to Ron Paul's campaign.
It's a harmonic convirgence of people seeking liberty all arriving at this time and place to make a difference.
God, FSM, Buddha, Allah, et al. bless all those who have the money to give to Ron Paul, some people are even doing with less Christmas to help us all be a little more free. Everyone that has helped with this campaign are the true patriots.
No wonder the party elite are a little uneasy about Ron Paul. The people are finally getting it and doing something about it.
it = Tax and spend big government are the fault of both parties and big corporations are totally cool with things just the way they are.
I wish I could have been there.
tenbase: yeah, and it's on a pedestal 55 1/2 feet tall. How many inches is that? As far as useless trivia goes, that's just WIERD.
Thanks for the blog tweak David. Editing in such a way proves why Reason is the home of classical liberals and libertarians. Your magazine is honest.
I only wish I could edit my "comment" above. I should have added, "Despite the inevitable focus on the entertaining crazies, the blog was an exciting summary of a very inspiring gathering of young professionals who want nothing more than a return to constitutional government".
People are getting sick and tired of the same old song-and-dance from their presidential candidates. See this YouTube music video, featuring horror movie icon, Reggie Bannister, from the international award-winning feature film, "Song of the Dead." It's a great satire on the president, the MSM, and the war on terror. The filmmaker is giving a share of his profits from the film to the Ron Paul campaign.

Is that what you are talking about? It does not stand on a pedestal.
David,
Awesome news about Ron Paul. I'd also like to thank you for being part of the live 24 hour coverage we had at Ron Paul Radio!

Looks like Paul picked up the endorsement of Andrew Sullivan, whoever that is.
How much of that Tea Party money is 'fiat' vs. real?
My guess is 100% vs. 0%
Guy, pretty hard to shove gold pieces through Teh Intertubes.
Though, from the replies to your posts, a few commenters upthread may be on the verge of suggesting you shove something up your own personal intertubes. 😉
Voted for Ron Paul in 1988 and will be so happy to do so again in 2008! Who would have thought? Sitting around for years reading Reason, Liberty, LP News and sadly thinking it is all a fine intellectual club, debating society or even church that will never go anywhere. Libertarians loved to say "most people are libertarian they just don't know it". Well maybe that is true! Ron Paul just may have ushered in a new libertarian age! What a rush!
Forget about more "money bombs". The money will roll in. Start working on becoming delgates and Precint Commitee Chairmen etc. Start knocking on doors, going to GOP meetings, talking to mainstream voters. Despite the impressive fund raising there is still a lot of boots on the ground traditional get out the vote work to do. All the money won't matter unless Ron Paul comes in strong in the early states and has oreganization to back it up.
OMG! The width of the Washington Monument is 666 inches wide! There's just no arguing with logic like that. I concede, you nutballs were right all along. Lincoln Casey, the architect, was secretly planning to spoil the Ron Paul candidacy 160 years in advance. Gosh, the superhuman cunning of those Satanists is so wicked. Wicked!
Any of you bright sparks that think Ron Paul and us Paulites are kooks then take a trip around the world and see how out numbered you are by kooks.

The Washington Monument is 555' tall and it's foundation footings extend to 111' below ground. 555' + 111" = 666'.

The media is completely bias! This should be disturbing to us considering Ron Paul is talking about Freedom, something all media should support. I think we to start something against the media by educating fellow Americans or by encouraging a boycott of corporate media backers.
Make it BIG!

LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN< STOP THE PRESS!
I am all for Ron Paul because of who he is and what he stands for, period. If you want to vote Democrat then vote democrat, if you want to vote republican then vote for Dr. Paul.
Why would you chose to play a game that you cannot win? the concept of being a good little victim has wore itself thin!
If you are a true american, then this is a no brainer- if you are communist perputating an american, then make sure you wake up on the morning they call you. there as always been and always will be 2 types of people in this world- those who care and those who do not. which one are you?
