Ich Liebe Lieberman!
Joltin' Joe Lieberman endorses John McCain and Seth Liebson is tickled pink:
On a poll question of 'Who is the most credible (or honorable) Senator in the country?' I'm guessing Lieberman's name comes on top or in second place. I think that might also be true of the question: 'Who is the most credible (or honorable) politician in the country?'
It's not quite the same thing but the "most admired" member of the U.S. Senate is actually… Hillary Clinton. But at least Lieberman is credible. Take note of this video from 2006, when he refused to say whether he'd endorse a Democrat for president in 2008.
Lieberman's endorsement speech is on the long side: The gist is that McCain is "the real change candidate" because he'll have the courage to throw America into a series of endless wars, which, in turn, will "break through the reflexive partisanship that is poisoning our politics." This is the alternative definition of "partisanship."
par'ti·san·ship n. Disagreeing with the editorial line of the Weekly Standard.
The immediate political question is whether this helps the Arizona senator in New Hampshire by inspiring undeclared voters, who can vote in either primary, to go McCain Crazy. That's what happened in 2000: McCain lost the GOP vote to Bush but creamed him with independents. I don't think it helps at all. New Hampshire independents, after a long flirtation with voting in the Democratic primary, are about 50-50 on which primary they'll actually vote in. But those independents hate the war. McCain's better off talking generically about his courage (and that contrast with Romney) than he is telling voters he and Joe will never pass up a land war in Asia.

In the recesses of Joe Lieberman's bizzaro brain, he thinks doing this will make him Vice President under McCain.
I can't think of one position Lieberman holds that I agree with. He moralizes like a Republican, he taxes/spends like a Democrat.
Hmm, why didn't he endorse Huckabee?
'Who is the most credible (or honorable) Senator in the country?'
That somebody can say this about a guy who launched an investigation into breakfast cereal prices is fucking hilarious.
That somebody can say this about a guy who launched an investigation into breakfast cereal prices is fucking hilarious.
Don't forget he also investigated the biggest threat to The Children of America ever--Mortal Combat and Night Trap.
It's astounding how far removed from reality the National Review has become.
Joe Lieberman is widely admired, the Democrats in Congress are in trouble, and the public is optimistic on the Iraq War.
'Who is the most credible (or honorable) Senator in the country?'
I suspect they added the "Senator" part to disqualify Ron Paul from the question, but they are right about McCain being the "most" credible:
Zero times any number...
Joe Lieberman is widely admired, the Democrats in Congress are in trouble, and the public is optimistic on the Iraq War.
...and George W. Bush is a model president for a post-911 world...
Boy, that guy sure does love the prospect of more war on a-rabs.
Taktix,
No, they're way down on Bush these days.
He was just too gentle with the Iraqis, you see.
Is it me, or is Lieberman a voice double for Marvin The Martian from Looney Toons?
"Oooohhh, you've made me very angry!"
I can't take him seriously just for that, let alone his idiotic stands on various issues.
Lieberman reminds me of that little magical dwarf in the Superman cartoons, Mr Mxytplyk (I probably misspelled that...).
Will someone please trick him into saying his name backwards and banish him back to his own dimension?
McCain is more popular with Democrats than with Republicans - after all, the polls show him in the single digits in the Republican primaries, but doing the best in theoretical matchups in the general.
Lieberman is, for reasons too obvious to go into here, more popular with Republicans than with Democrats.
So this makes a lot of sense. David Broder must be having a three-hour orgasm.
joe,
I think you're also showing a popular misconception that kind of drives me crazy.
The public perceives McCain and Lieberman as doing what they think a "3rd Party" would do, namely act like a R and a D.
That's why when real alternatives to the Red Team/Blue Team, like the good Dr. Paul, come along, they dismiss him as an extremist. He doesn't fit their 3rd Party mold of "bringing the Democrats and Republicans together."
IIRC, that single party system hasn't worked so well in the past.
NH's independents are turning to Paul. McCain and Obama run on the "time for a change" slogan, but they are both just more of the same.
RON PAUL is the truth, with an impeccable ten term record. The closer you look the more he shines.
McCain is more popular with Democrats than with Republicans - after all, the polls show him in the single digits in the Republican primaries, but doing the best in theoretical matchups in the general.
Lieberman is, for reasons too obvious to go into here, more popular with Republicans than with Democrats.
Indeed. Between them, that seems to be their most outstanding characteristic - treachery to their respective parties.
Perhaps they could call their 3rd party effort the Benedict Arnold Party...
I'm not sure I'd translate McCain as a traitor like most GOPers do. Because he was for Campaign Finance and against Torture? If those positions make you a traitor to that party, then they're nuttier than I thought...
Lieberman on the other hand has taken the central issue of the Dems now and turned coat. Lieberman does seem to be a truly bi-partisan figure: he combines the worst of both parties (real wars, yay, first person shooter video games, evil).
I just saw Hillary Clinton on CNN talking about her "35 years of experience." WTF? Being a first lady to a multi-term governor and president? She has virtually no accomplishments other than connections to power...
It's not quite the same thing but the "most admired" member of the U.S. Senate is actually... Hillary Clinton.
Which just shows how low the bar is in the Senate.
And which shows how well-stocked the bar in the Senate must be.
Lincoln pulled this off in 1864 - forming the Union Party with a war Democrat as his running mate, Andrew Johnson, against peace democrat
George McClellan. If Bush were running again, you could almost see it (running with Lieberman). With the fall of Atlanta, and the siege of Richmond, Lincoln could show the war was about to conclude favorably and the war-weary North voted for him again. I guess the
Republicans are hoping for the same state of affairs in Iraq come Sept. 2008.
Correct me if I am wrong, but does anyone outside the state of Connecticut actually like Lieberman?
Ron Paul has his own city. Come and support it.

Because he was for Campaign Finance and against Torture? If those positions make you a traitor to that party, then they're nuttier than I thought...
Signing "Campaign Finance" was an act of treason against America itself...
Seriously, now - we're still supposed to be paying attention to Lieberman? I was pretty sure any relevance he had was lost after the Dems took the Senate and torpedoed the whole "I'm an independent, pay attention to me!" thing he had going.
"Signing "Campaign Finance" was an act of treason against America itself..."
Taktix,
You really believe that? I mean, I can see thinking it is wrongheaded. Unconstitutional. But jeez, it strikes me as very, very minor. That bill will affect just about everybody's life here about nil, unless you had a few thou you were hoping to parlay into a tv ad around Oct...
MNG,
While I agree it is minor in practice, it has opened the door to the government regulating political speech.
Like any other government intervention, it starts out mild, but over time, they keep tightening little by little until that right is no longer valid.
But yes, they have to take small steps to stay under the radar...
Terri, well written piece and actually really funny and informative.
Thank you for exposing liebermann.
And which shows how well-stocked the bar in the Senate must be.
Well, Ted Kennedy is a regular.
I will say this about Joe Lieberman...like many neo-cons he is very loyal to his country, of course his country is Israel and not the United States.
"does anyone outside the state of Connecticut actually like Lieberman?"
Lets remember that this Senator and former V.P. candidate was defeated in a primary within his own party and then Republicans provided the majority of votes for his relection in Connecticut.
So they're "treacherous" towards their own party for doing what they believe is right for America? Honestly, the stupidity of some people really amazes me. I will tell you this much: the comments on this board just further prove why Washington never gets anything done; it's all about partisan politics any more. How about we get someone as president who puts America first, instead of their political party? God forbid government actually gets things done for a change. You people need to wise up, or remove yourself from the process.
well, there you have it.
Publius says something with some sort of emotion.
And gave us a reason to drink.
"You people need to wise up, or remove yourself from the process."
Umm...if by wise up you mean vote for anything that has 'JoMentum' then you are out of your mind.
You people need to wise up, or remove yourself from the process.
I'd rather just be a wiseass.
"How about we get someone as president who puts America first"
Like Ron Paul.
telling voters he and Joe will never pass up a land war in Asia.
But would he go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line?
"I just saw Hillary Clinton on CNN talking about her "35 years of experience." WTF? Being a first lady to a multi-term governor and president? She has virtually no accomplishments other than connections to power..."
I like a comment that was made on the "nohillaryforpresident" blog. If living in the White House makes you qualified to be president, then Socks is qualified.
Joe: you think the Democrats in Congress are not in trouble? I agree that the other two assertions are silly, the third maybe a bit less than the first.
Politically, the Democrats' majority is extremely safe and almost certain to increase next year.
And if Hillary Clinton's experience as First Lady was limited to "living at the White House," then Andy Card's experience is limited to picking up him mail there.
Ron Paul, Mike Huckabee, John McCain, etc., it doesn't matter to me who anyone supports in this race, but it should matter WHY you support that candidate. The problem with the system is that most people would rather play partisan about everything, rather than truly examine who and what's right for this country. I truthfully believe that seeing a guy like Leiberman endorse a guy like McCain took some stones, and should be recognized as such, not ridiculed. Washington in general could take a lesson here, and if that happens, then I'll take that drink with VM.
joe,
I don't see how you can say that. There's no surge for the GOP, but I don't see a lot of love for the Democrats out there, either. I think the results of the primaries may dictate the composition of Congress, at least to some extent. I, for one, will vote largely GOP for Congress if it looks like a Democrat will win the White House.
I truthfully believe that seeing a guy like Leiberman endorse a guy like McCain took some stones, and should be recognized as such, not ridiculed.
Why would it take any stones? He was through as a Democrat! His own party wouldn't renominate him. He won as an independent, largely with Republican votes.
Smells a lot more like opportunism than stones to me!
Lieberman is a hawk in the Middle East because he has a personal religious and ethnic reason for wanting Israel's neighbors too busy dealing with American troops to be able to concentrate on getting nukes to take our Israel.
take OUT Israel.
Preview, dammit!
War that one uv meiner slippens, Herr prolefeed?
I don't think this endorsement took any courage at all...Lieberman is not a Democrat anyway...he is an independent or more accurately he ran on the Connecticut for Lieberman Party... He ran a humiliating campaign and was rejected by the Democratic Party and has been more hawkish than a lot of Republicans...

Mr. Charlie Lindbergh, he flew to old Berlin,
Got him a big Iron Cross, and he flew right back again
To Washington, Washington.
Mrs. Charlie Lindbergh, she come dressed in red,
Said, "I'd like to sleep in that pretty White House bed
In Washington, Washington."
Lindy said to Annie: "We'll get there by and by,
But we'll have to split the bed up with Wheeler, Clark, and Nye
In Washington, Washington."
Hitler wrote to Lindy, said "Do your very worst,"
Lindy started an outfit that he called America First
In Washington, Washington.
All around the country, Lindbergh he did fly,
Gasoline was paid for by Hoover, Clark, and Nye
In Washington, Washington.
Lindy said to Hoover: "We'll do the same as France:
Make a deal with Hitler, and then we'll get our chance
In Washington, Washington
Then they had a meetin', and all the Firsters come,
Come on the walk and they come on the run
In Washington, Washington
Yonder comes Father Coughlin, wearin' the silver chain,
Cash on his stomach and Hitler on the brain.
In Washington, Washington
Mister John L. Lewis would sit and straddle the fence,
His daughter signed with Lindbergh, and we ain't seen her since
In Washington, Washington
Hitler said to Lindy: "Stall 'em all you can,
Gonna bomb Pearl Harbor with the help of old Japan."
In Washington, Washington
Then on a December mornin', the bombs come from Japan,
Wake Island and Pearl Harbor, kill fifteen hundred men.
Washington, Washington
Now Lindy tried to join the army, but they wouldn't let 'im in,
'Fraid he'd sell to Hitler a few more million men.
In Washington, Washington
So I'm gonna tell you people, if Hitler's gonna be beat,
The common working people have got to take the seat
In Washington, Washington.
And I'm gonna tell you workers, 'fore you cash in your checks:
They say America First, but they mean America Next
In Washington, Washington.
Wow, this thread got Godwinned in the title! That has to be a record.
Lieberman is a traitor and a fool. I realize that he changed affiliations and is now and independent however how someone who in the recent past ran as VP as a democrat could now endorse a republican is beyond me. I consider him a traitor and an idiot and nothing more. I hope he loses his seat in the next election and would contribute to anyone who challenges him.
God forbid government actually gets things done for a change.
Amen! Every time government "gets things done" we the people get the shaft.
The problem with the system is that most people would rather play partisan about everything, rather than truly examine who and what's right for this country.
Most politicians believe what their party wants to do is "right for this country." Almost all the time, when folks make statements like Publius they are either Democrats who want Republicans to quit being partisan and vote like Democrats, or Republicans who want Democrats to quit being partisan and vote like Republicans.
They are, of course, both wrong. What we need is for Republicans and Democrats to quit being partisan and vote like libertarians.
Joe Lieberman and John McCain are quite opposites on most domestic issues. For example, their voting records reveal that McCain is among the more frugal senators while slime bag Joe is among the biggest spenders. His endorsement of John McCain reveals that keeping us entangled in the Mideast is what's important to the war monger.. It was just a little while ago that Lieberman was pulling for an attack on Iran.
Liberman is a total idiot that only cares about the US waging war with the Arab states forever to protect Israel. If he is so hawkish why doesn't he take his chicken ass over there?????????? He is a jerk and a traitor
Pro Lib,
In polling about which party people want to control the Congress, the Democrats are winning by between 10 and 20 points.
For those who write this off as some sort of opportunism by Lieberman that took no courage. There will be repercussions for his actions, and the Democrats will most likely do their worst to make his life uncomfortable for the rest of his tenure. What does he get out of it, other than the satisfaction that he did what he thought was right? Did he have to do that to commit political suicide? No, so those who think this didn't take some courage obviously have some kind of agenda clouding their judgement. I could care less about Lieberman, but I applaud his decision; if we had more politicians who did what they felt/knew was right, this country would be a lot better off.
