Election '07: Seriously, There Was One!
A grab-bag of states and cities held elections yesterday, and the results were mostly good for suburban Democrats, mostly good for Mississippi Republicans, very good for reforming mayoral candidates, mixed for illegal immigration hawks, and lousy for the Reason Foundation. Last one first:
- Republican Gary Baise, who cited Sam Staley and Ted Balaker's research from The Road More Travelled in his transportation plan, lost his chairman bid in Virginia's sprawling Fairfax County.
- Baise's loss had less to do with privatization than the (R) next to his name, as Republicans lost Virginia's state Senate for the first time. Yes, the first time ever: Ten years ago Dixiecrat voters completed their long march into the GOP and gave them both chambers of the Assembly. I think this is the first Southern state legislature to return to Democratic rule since the Democrats won back North Carolina in 1998. The margin came from the Virginia Beach area and the rapidly blue-ifying DC suburbs.
- Republicans who ran on the illegal immigration issue won some and lost some. Bob FitzSimmonds ran against ancient Democratic Sen. Chuck Colgan by pointing out he'd never sponsored an anti-immigration bill, and the GOP saw its best chance for a pick-up until Colgan won by 8 points. State Sen. Jay O'Brien tried to stave off Democrat George Barker by waving the bloody sombrero, and he went down in a squeaker. But Prince William County Chairman Corey Stewart, champion of a crackdown on illegal immigrants, won by 10 points.
- Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour easily won (58-42) a second term as Republicans picked up most statewide offices. Over in drought country, Kentucky Gov. Ernier Fletcher got routed (59-41) by Democrat Steve Beshear. Both governors were crooked if you looked hard enough. With Fletcher you didn't need to look as hard.
- Democrat Michael Nutter became Philadelphia's first sane mayor since 1999 and, in the best news for Republicans, first-time candidate Greg Ballard ousted Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson. It's not unusual for Indianapolis to have a Republican mayor, as the legendary Steve Goldsmith can attest. It is unusual for a candidate who was outspent 10 to 1 to ride into office on voter anger about crime and property taxes. But Democrats did snatch the mayoralty of Canton, Ohio. What's so interesting about that?
Republicans used Canton as a testing ground for get-out-the-vote techniques that could be repeated in the 2008 presidential election.
Anybody seen Karl Rove lately?

Did I miss the Cheney Impeachment coverage here? Sorry, this work stuff is ruining my concentration on the real issues 🙂
oh, FIRST POST!
first-time candidate Greg Ballard ousted Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson.
Wow; I would like to believe it was at least partly a punishment for the stadium deal, but that's pretty doubtful.
Nutter is sane? Granted, saner than his two predecessors, but that's an easy feat. All-in-all, better a loony mayor who allows you to take a modicum of responsbility for yourself than a sane Nutter who will force Philly to rival San Francisco for most nannified city goverment.
And Baltimore has a new mayor.
In Louisville, we defeated an occupational tax hike "for the Library". Badly. 2 to 1.
The Yes folks outspent the No group 28 to 1.
One minor quibble. Virginia is not really a "Southern state" anymore. The DC suburbs where all of the population growth is occurring demographically resemble the Northeast more than the South. Combine that with the high-tax tendencies of the GOP leadership in Va., and I doubt whether you can use Va. as a bellweather for anything nationally. Some of the races in other states are interesting, though.
And Baltimore has a new mayor.
No it doesn't. The names may change, but nothing else does.
Lance Armstrong got his vanity Cancer Research Center funding passed here in Texas. That's right, apparently there was no place else in the state that this was occuring.
Both governors were crooked if you looked hard enough.
Explain this staement, please. I understand the reference to Fletcher, but not to Barbour. Unless you expand the statement to read: [All] governors [are] crooked if you looked hard enough.
Wow, those advertising programmer folks really do have my IP address. I got the "I survived roe v. wade" chick again!
In Cincinnati (Hamilton Co.) a sales tax for a new jail was defeated.
Semper Si, the sheriff, is sputtering.
MayorOmalleySux
Heh, I misread the comment you are asking about. I thought it was referring to Beshear, not Barbour. Beshear (my new guv elect) may actually be more corrupt than Fletcher. And he hasnt even beent tempted by the power of Governor yet. Im not saying he has the potential to be more corrupt, Im saying he already has been.
Yeah for corrupt KY politicians!!!
In a victory for libretarianism, New Jersey rejects taxpayer funded stem cell research:

Virginia seems to be a developing problem for the GOP. With the electoral college as evenly divided as it has been the last few elections, Virginia is a critical state, as are all the other 49, obviously.
The problem for Republicans is there are several other states that were once reliably red that appear to be trending blue, including New Hampshire, Ohio, Arizona, Nevada and Colorado.
If this continues, even the Democrats may have a hard time figuring out how to blow the opportunity.
In WA state, voters are passing an initiative that requires a 2/3 vote in both houses to raise taxes.
OTOH, they are also passing a referendum allowing insurance companies to be sued for "treble damages" if they refuse to cover this or that. Apparently they love trial lawyers in this state.
And best of all, voters are rejecting the largest transportation tax hike in state history. The talking heads are really crying over that one.
If this continues, even the Democrats may have a hard time figuring out how to blow the opportunity.
Yet despite this, they will find a way...
Best part of the library vote was the complete slamming our Mayor-for-Life took. During his last campaign, he ran a commercial saying that he had library expansion in his budget, it could be done without raising taxes.
The No supporters last night called out the mayor to go ahead with the planned expansion, since it will fit in his budget.
BTW, the specific plan they were going for (and glossing over): Right now the library gets $16M a year in the budget. The new tax would raise ~$40M a year for the library and the $16M would go back to the general fund. This was all a plan to get extra revenue for the mayor/city council to spend. There was no talk of a $16M property tax cut.
Cincinnati, OH -
1. Rejected $700 million "jail" tax (only a small fraction of which would have been spent on building a new jail); and
2. Rejected property tax levy for the public school system.
Pug,
Yes, VA and NV are definite problems for the red team. The demographics of Fairfax county are almost exactly the same as the demographics of Santa Clara county in the Bay Area. And Fairfax county now has (correct me if I'm wrong here) like 20% of the state's population. Nevada is full of two types: Retired California boomers (fairly blue) and libertarian/western-style Republicans (you know, the kind that have been ignored at the national level for 9 years now and counting.)
x,y
$700M? How many people was Cincy going to lock up?
And Fairfax county now has (correct me if I'm wrong here) like 20% of the state's population.
And the people being priced out of Fairfax are moving to Loudon and Prince William, which is why the Democrats gained seats there even though the GOP gerrymandered them to be solid red in 2001. They WERE red, but liberals keep moving into the districts.
Self-described "libertarian Republican" Ryan Davidson won his propositions in the tiny town of Hailey, Idaho for marijuana legalization.
The votes were 60% to 40% in favor of legalized industrial hemp, medical use of marijuana, and to establish marijuana arrests as the lowest priority for local law enforcement.
Some 1,200 voters voted in the election.

The Libertarian Party is reporting 11 local election victories, mostly for town councils, and also township supervisor in PA, MI and IA. It appears that 6 of them are new pick-ups, the other 5 incumbent reelections. http://www.lp.org
Oregon voters rejected Democrat Gov. Kulongowski's raise in tobacco tax for children's health care 60% to 40%. Reports are that Kulongowski is absolutely livid with the Republicans who opposed his measure.
Also, reports just coming out of Washington State of a Tax rollback victory.

I know its tempting to tie everything into national politics, but the implosion of the Republican Party of Virginia is not really related to national politics. Its began in 2001 when Bush was at 90% approval. Its because, well, the Democrats became pro-gun and the Republicans have continually shot themselves in the foot with bad candidates and bad campaigns. For God's sake I have no love lost for the Democrats but even felt compelled to vote for Tim Kaine over Jerry "Hitler Ads" Kilgore and for Jim Webb over George "Macaca" Allen.
I too am curious about the comment tarring Haley Barbour as crooked. What is this a reference to?
Very bad news out of New Jersey and Utah.
NJ barely voted back a statewide property tax relief initiative that was opposed by the Democrats. Worse news, Fascist-Democrat Linda Greenstein, the initiator of "Fair Elections" reform which establishes gov. subsidized elections in the State, and had the result of banning the Libertarian in the race against her from a debate, has apparently squeeked by for reelection.
Utah voters have rejected the School Voucher initiative. Reports are that it was a tight margin.

Wish shows you're a lover of Political Correctness there Cesar.
Voting against Allen because of the Macaca statement? My gosh. And you call yourself a "libertarian." You should be ashamed.
PC Sucks!!!
And if you all haven't heard yet, the big news of the morning: Pat Robertson has just endorsed Rudy Giuliani for President.
This may virtually clinch the nomination for Giuliani.
Voting against Allen because of the Macaca statement? My gosh. And you call yourself a "libertarian." You should be ashamed.
Dondero, go to hell.
I voted for Webb because I wanted someone who would bring sanity back to foreign policy. If Webb was pro-gun control I wouldn't have voted for him, for the record.
Allen was the first to bring out the "political correctness" stuff by calling Webb a misogynist.
I know you love Republicans who give fellatio to George Bush every five seconds as your Senator but not all of us do.
Also, Allen is a complete moron. If he had been more like John Warner instead of a bitch for the executive branch he just might have been returned to Washington.
King County, WA (which includes Seattle) and the two adjoining counties defeated the extraordinarily bloated, $17B "roads & transit" package, which included $7B of what people do want (roads) and was piggybacked by $10B of boondoggle light rail and other transit.
David,
I'm stunned Reason missed the Haily, Idaho results. This is the absolute best news of the day for the entire libertarian movement. This is a huge win in the home of libertarian Republican Buth Otter. You all should be headlining this story.
And the proponent is a "self-described libertarian Republican." Source - AP & CBS News out of Missoula, MT.

Cesar, Webb is a sexual freak. And that's coming from me - an ex-Swinger.
Did you ever hear about that paragraph in one of Webb's books about the Cambodian father (I apologize to Reason for being so graphic here), sucking the dick of his young son? Absolutely disgusting stuff.
Allen had every right to bring that up.
If you opposed Allen for other reaons, fine. But opposing him for making that "macaca" statement is just downright ludicrous.
*Does the happy dance with robc*
The voter turnout in Oldham county was pathetic, but I suspect that's because we had no occupational tax hike to vote against. I'm glad that 2 out of 3 Jefferson county-ans saw through the brazilions of YES Library campaign spending and voted it down with a resounding HELL NO!
As for the governor's race, I honestly didn't know whether Beshear or Fletcher was more crooked. Casinos yes, universal healthcare no, ten commandments in the KY capitol no... I basically shut my eyes and pushed the button.
It made me ill to do it.
You heard it here first: opposing the use of racial slurs by political candidates is un-libertarian.
OK, you probably didn't hear it here first. But you heard it from someone with quite a libertarian resume.
Eric, it. was. a. novel.
And thats not what I was referring to. He made a statement in 1980(!) that said women shouldn't be in combat and Allen tried to make hay about it. Hey, if you want to keep moving Team Red in the direction its been going for the last six years be my guest. It only hurts you. Don't learn, don't change, use the same tactics and same strategies forever. I mean, they've worked so well in Virginia in the last seven years! If by "Working well" you mean turning off half the state.
JMR, I'm hearing the news coming out of Washington State is all good. You just confirmed it. Steve Beren, Seattle-area Republican Congressional candidate is keeping me informed.
Washington State desperately needs a healthy dose of libertarian Republicanism. Perhaps Washington Staters are finally waking up to the Fascist illegitamate rule of Christine Gregoire.
Dino Rossi for '08!!!!!
Dave Weigel writes: And the people being priced out of Fairfax are moving to Loudon and Prince William, which is why the Democrats gained seats there even though the GOP gerrymandered them to be solid red in 2001. They WERE red, but liberals keep moving into the districts.
Back when the Republicans were talking about their Permanent Majority, they liked to point to the fact that the fastest-growing counties in the country were all deep-red exurbs/suburbanizing rural areas.
The problem with that theory is that this is how that population growth works.
fuck you Cesar. I entirely agree with Allen. Women shouldn't be in combat!!!
Does that make me unlibertarian somehow?
Speaking as a Veteran, I can tell you women on ships is bad, very, very bad idea.
Good for Allen for speaking the truth on the subject. You've made me like George Allen even more!!!
Eric-
Webb was the one who said women shouldn't be in combat (in 1980). Now he says hes comfortable with whatever the military is comfortable with, but he felt at the time that it was being forced by politicians.
So, good job for agreeing with Webb. Read my post more carefully next time.
Wow, DOOOONDERRROOOOO is going gangbusters on this thread--and it's mostly just election reports and not idiotic spewing!
Wait, I spoke too soon...
So what Cesar, "it was a novel."
It was downright disgusting. If that isn't child porn, I don't know what is. Webb should have been crucified for that. A father sucking his son's dick. Yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck. Puking my guts out even saying it.
But the liberal media gave him a complete pass.
Anybody who writes something like that in a book, novel or otherwise, DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE A UNITED STATES SENATOR!!
joe-
They're not just losing in Northern Virginia. They're losing in Hampton Roads, a conservative/military area. They've even had much smaller margins in the southwest. Its really, really pathetic. Virginia should be a slam dunk for them and they can't even win here.
As much as I'd like to relieve 2006 Dondero, lets not.
I voted for Webb because I wanted someone who would bring sanity back to foreign policy. If Webb was pro-gun control I wouldn't have voted for him, for the record.
Yea, he can't even control his own gun when an assistant tries to smuggle it into the office.
Well, that was a little harsh. He was able to control the coverage in reason from beginning to end 🙂
Dondero, speaking as someone with a degree in anthropology, you are a fucking idiot. Phallic behavior is very common in societies across the world.
I'm no cultural relativist, but you're just being a moron.
Yes Episerch, I'm going gangbusters, cause I believe today is a good day to be a libertarian.
And I want everyone to share in my glee.
Yes, we had a couple defeats: Utah School Choice initiative (just barely lost), New Jersey Property Tax cut initiative (barely lost too), That Bitch Linda Greenstein squeeking by with her reelection for NJ Assembly after she publicly dissed her Libertarian opponent (see the video at http://www.libertarianrepublican.blogspot.com).
But look at what we won!!
11 Libertarian Party members elected to public office, 6 of them, including a Township Supervisor, new pick-ups.
Oregon Tobacco Tax DEFEATED!!! And that asshold Democrat Governor Kulongowski literally in tears over his loss.
Washington State local transportation tax hikes defeated.
A Republican winning back the Mayorship of Indiannapolis.
Plus, let's not forget Republican Bobby Jindal winning the Governorship of Louisian two weeks ago.
Great day to be a Libertarian or Libertarian Republican!!!
That settles it, DUNDEROOOO is Francis.
(inspired, of course, by the Stripes reference in the title of the thread. Kudos, Hr. Weigel!)
JMR, I'm hearing the news coming out of Washington State is all good.
Keeping the supermajority for school levies was huge. I'm so happy about that. I'm not happy, though, about R-67, which will attract many more trial lawyers to this state who will be able to make a living suing insurance companies to the point of settling while the rest of us get the cost passed on to us. So the news isn't all good, but I'd say it's mostly good.
Dave,
They WERE red, but liberals Leftists keep moving into the districts.
Fixed it for ya.
Episerch, as someone who has a degree in Political Science I can tell you that Americans do not support father's sucking the dick's of their sons, for whatever reason, in whatever region of the United States, within whatever American ethnic group.
It is something that we Americans absolutely abhore.
Cesar,
Speaking in broad terms, I'd expect most of the Hampton Roads-type voters to move back into the R column in 2010 or so, when Iraq is in the rearview mirror (at least as a political issue), but the suburbs turning blue represents a real change.
Dondero, you fucking moron: school vouchers went down 60-40 in Utah.
Since I doubt you can do the math, I'll spell it out for you. That's a 20-point defeat. Liberty loses by a landslide. It's not the "tight margin" you had alluded to. Get your facts straight.
The school choice people have a lot of work to do. How many more generations do we have to lose?
God, Dondero. If you don't know the score, why do you pretend that you do? You are a boil on the ass of the freedom movement.
Dondero, how well did that issue work for Allen in the election? But keep using the same strategy!
I've always suspected Eric couldn't tell the difference between fiction and reality.
JMR, I'm hearing the news coming out of Washington State is all good... Washington State desperately needs a healthy dose of libertarian Republicanism.
Don't get your hopes up too much!
The funny thing is, I'm quite sure that the R&T measure was defeated due to swarm of people not wanting the rail, but its enviro-opponents (environmentalists were split on this measure) and the local papers are spinning it as people rejecting it because they don't want road enhancements and did want more transit than the measure provided.
They should feel free to put separate roads and transit measures on the ballot and see how they do, but then the light rail emperor would be shown to be naked.
Cizzla, I stand corrected. Sorry, I was going by the first reports I heard on Fox News very early this morning.
Oops, and I forgot perhaps the biggest victory of the night for libertarians: Marijuana legalization in Haily, Idaho. I'm shocked nobody else has picked up on this. Reason???
Its funny, in the election Allen said he "Cares about fact not fiction" and then proceeded to attack a work of fiction.
Cesar, the issue didn't work at all for Allen, cause the liberal media refused to cover the story. The only place you could hear the news of it was on Hannity, Savage, et.al.
Allen, rightly so, didn't want to bring it up, because it was so downright disgusting.
Child porn is pictures or video of a child engaged in a sexual act. Nothing more and nothing less.
A novel, no matter what its textual content, cannot be child porn.
Okay Cesar, let's get you on record.
Are you saying here that you have no problem with graphic descriptions of father's sucking the dicks of their sons, so long as they are within a "work of fiction"?
And if you all haven't heard yet, the big news of the morning: Pat Robertson has just endorsed Rudy Giuliani for President.
This may virtually clinch the nomination for Giuliani.
*prolonged, outright, laughter*
Cesar, the issue didn't work at all for Allen, cause the liberal media refused to cover the story. The only place you could hear the news of it was on Hannity, Savage, et.al.
What the hell are you talking about? I don't know about nationally but it was all over the papers and local news here. And I do remember it being on CNN. Truth is, it backfired badly. But keep telling yourself otherwise! Don't learn from your mistakes! Stay the course!
Allen, rightly so, didn't want to bring it up, because it was so downright disgusting.
Yes, George Allen, the paragon of virtue. /snark
My Gosh, you people here truly are anarchists. You're not libertarians.
If you support legalizing child pornography you are be definition anarchists who don't want any government at all.
That's NOT libertarian. We libertarians believe in limited government, including illegality of child pornography.
If Allen didn't have a history, the macaca moment wouldn't have mattered.
But there was just one story after another.
Very, very recently, nooses, confederate imagery, and accusations of racist attitudes going back decades would have been a net positive for a candidate in Virginia.
Not any more.
Are you saying here that you have no problem with graphic descriptions of father's sucking the dicks of their sons, so long as they are within a "work of fiction"?
Frankly I don't give a shit what he wrote in a novel. Especially if he was describing a foreign culture where that actually does happen.
Describing a cultural practice in rural Cambodia != approval of said cultural practice. Are you that thick?
Very, very recently, nooses, confederate imagery, and accusations of racist attitudes going back decades would have been a net positive for a candidate in Virginia.
I don't care about Confederate flags if someone has ancestors who fought in the Confederacy, or if they are old time southerners. It can be understood. But Allen was from Southern California and his mother from France, there was just zero reason for him to have Confederate flags.
Dondero. Many, many, MANY works of fiction contain content that is disturbing and difficult to read. It's part of conveying the human condition, which is what novels tend to do.
Go look up "child abuse" and "fiction" and see how many books turn up. Then go ahead and make that "child sexual abuse" and see what happens. See how much is out there? Is it all child porn?
Well, is it?
Good christ man, you are a fucking illiterate moron.
Not just approving of that practice, Cesar.
Wanting to see it legalized.
But Allen was from Southern California and his mother from France, there was just zero reason for him to have Confederate flags.
Oh, I can think of one.
Bronwyn,
Yeah, meaasuring the corruption in the Gov race is worthless. I didnt even care who won. Plus, it was a done deal anyway.
As I talked to people last week, I realized the library vote was going to go the right way. I was still surprised at the level of defeat though. Happy about it, though. Greater Louisville, Inc. lost a member over their support of the issue. My partner and I refuse to rejoin. In fact, we are talking our membership plaque to the range soon, plink a few holes in it and then we are going to rehang it on the wall.
I'm happy to report that Charlotte voters overwhelmingly rejected a repeal of the 1/2 cent sales tax to fund light rail and other mass tranist projects by a margin of 70 to 30. This tax was first approved by voters in 1998.
The anti-tax forces didn't even get as many votes as they did signatures to get the referendum on the ballot in the first place.
To add to the horror, voters here also approved a $516 million bond package to support public schools.
s/talking/taking/g
perhaps the biggest victory of the night for libertarians: Marijuana legalization in Haily, Idaho.
As goes Hailey, Idaho, so goes the nation!
Have you ever been to Hailey, oh Great Arbiter of Libertarianism? When I lived up the road, in Ketchum, the population of Hailey was about 1700. Get a grip on yourself.
Of course, Dondero the great glowing Libertarian paragon would make 'Romeo and Juliet' illegal to read or own...you know, to cut down on the child porn.
mein gott! Hay DUNDEROO - what would you classify the TICKLE ME ELMO doll as?
and how would it change if you were dressed as a priest?
Dunderhead,
If the written description of incestuous relations is "child porn", then you are guilty of repeatedly producing child in this thread- reporting news is not exempted from child porn laws.
Please surrender yourself immediately to the Brazoria County Sheriff's Department on County Road 45 there in Angleton. Have fun being treated
Don't worry I'm sure the NYPD under "libertarian" Giuliani would have treated Dondero very well if he got caught in such an offense. Or if he got caught with a cheap prostitute. I mean, hes libertarian! Right??
Dan T. your post is a bit confusing. Are you saying that our anti-Tax forces won? Cause later you say "to add to the horror" and talk of a tax increase.
Which is it? Please clarify. I'd like to report on this for MainstreamLibertarian.com
Dondero is the biggest troll. Sorry Dan T, you've lost your title.
Another day of idiocy in Texas as voters approve every amendment proposition, allowing Austin to put itself in billions of dollars of debt.
On the plus side, the constitutional authorization for the office of hides and animals was removed.
Charlie, there's a Brazoria County Sheriff two houses down from me. I'll report to him right away.
DUNER(head)OOOOO, A MERE FUNCTIONAL EQUIVALENT OF A MAN, IS THE FIRST OF THAT TYPE TO BE REJECTED BY WEIBSKOBOLD.
Was he URKOBOLD man enough to fight for his country?
@Eric Dondero:
Actually, defeating the NJ property tax "relief" ballot question is a libertarian VICTORY.
The measure would have dedicated 1 percentage point of the sales tax to property tax relief, but would have done absolutely nothing to lower aggregate taxes or restrain spending.
Since the sales tax is statewide, but property taxes are local, this would have turned into a means of funneling money away from those who earned it and into the urban districts where the Democrat's voter base lives (notice that it was architected by a legislator from Camden).
Since it didn't specify how the money would be allocate, it would probably be worse than simply redistribution of wealth. Since this is New Jersey, it would have quickly turned into a fund that legislators would use to feather the nests of those who support their reelections.
Dan T. your post is a bit confusing. Are you saying that our anti-Tax forces won? Cause later you say "to add to the horror" and talk of a tax increase.
Which is it? Please clarify. I'd like to report on this for MainstreamLibertarian.com
Sorry, Eric. My "add to the horror" comment was sarcastic as I voted in favor of the bond package and against the tax repeal. I assumed my reputation around here would suffice for people to know what I'm talking about but I haven't posted much here in the last few weeks I guess.
So in both cases the anti-tax forces lost, I guess you could say.
Check the front page of charlotte.com for more detail.
In the last couple weeks, These signs have been everywhere in Austin.
Proposition 15 passed, so everybody rejoice -- breast cancer has been ended!
Nigel,
Oh, it's worse than that. I looked at the numbers. Roughly 5% of the voting population of Texas managed to put the rest of us taxpayers on the hook for another 9 billion in debt. At least statewide turnout was higher than my precinct. We had 76 early votes and 184 yesterday, out of 4000 registered. I'm having a "democracy sucks" moment pretty hard this morning.
But hey, at least Harris County doesn't get a new jail!
I also note Eric isn't crowing about the progress of liberty in his back yard, mainly because there was none.
Nigel, I honestly haven't paid too much attention to Brazoria County. What happened?
Texas voters displayed their mindless support of big government by approving all of the propositions on the ballot. Unfortunately, when we finally discover "the cure" for cancer theri will be no one left in the state due to the crushing debt burden.
My little burb of Cedar Park approved three wasteful spending bills, but we did reject the worst one. Funding for a new City Hall was denied. This is probably due to the fact that the mayor (Bob Lemon) is a feeble minded idiot.
Dan T. may I post your quick little blurb, slightly edited for clarification, as a news update over at MainstreamLibertarian.com? I'm collecting all the election results of the day. I'd credit you, of course.
I also note Eric isn't crowing about the progress of liberty in his back yard, mainly because there was none.
But, but, I thought Rick Perry was a "libertarian Republican" or at least "libertarian leaning"? He has to be, right? /sarcasm
And if you all haven't heard yet, the big news of the morning: Pat Robertson has just endorsed Rudy Giuliani for President.
This may virtually clinch the nomination for Giuliani.
This from someone who calls Ron Paul supporters looney. To my knowledge, no RP supporters have claimed to have diverted a hurricane. Dondi, you're a dipshit tool.
Since you hate Pat Robertson so much doesn't that turn your stomach a little Dondi?
I forgot, you have no principles at all. If Daddy Giuliani and Team red shit in your mouth, you'd say "MMM, chocolate!".
But, but, I thought Rick Perry was a "libertarian Republican" or at least "libertarian leaning"?
Yeah, the guy who tried to vaccinate children by executive order is "libertarian leaning", if you leave out the libertarian part.
Well T, I wouldn't put it past Dondero to say hes "libertarian leaning" since he supports a quasi-fascist boot licker for President.
Dan T. may I post your quick little blurb, slightly edited for clarification, as a news update over at MainstreamLibertarian.com? I'm collecting all the election results of the day. I'd credit you, of course.
Sure.
These were both pretty interesting issues here in Charlotte. I think the tax repeal vote was especially important because the city is a few weeks away from opening the first light rail line and if the tax had been repealed it would have thrown a wrench in the city's pretty ambitious plans to expand the service to several other areas.
I know libertarians don't generally support public transit projects but frankly I don't see how a city of any real size can function without them.

Dan, what does the "T" stand for. I'd like to put the NC report under your bi-line. Thanks
Hey, at least in Ft. Bend County, TX, we were able to derail a 1% sales tax increase to pay for "emergency services", since it's not like that's already paid for through both sales tax and our propery taxes.
I think it's even line-itemed on one of my property tax bills - the one that nobody reads since they escrow anyway.
CESAR - URKOBOLD HAS A LONG AND GLORIOUS JOHNSO SERVICE IN THE VARIOUS MILITARYS.
YOU WILL NOTICE THAT AMERICA HAS NOT BEEN ATTACKED BY PYGMY WARRIORS FROM ATLANTIS. SINCE YOU CAN READ THAT IN ENGLISH, THANK THE URKOBOLD.
AND THANK THE WEIBSKOBOLD, WHO PREVENTS THE URKOBOLD FROM SWELLING UP AND BURSTING FROM ALL OF THE MAGNIFICENT TROLL SEED HE PRODUCES!!!
NOW DANCE, MONKEY BOY DUNDERHEADOOOO. DANCE.
HI I'M BINGO, AND I'M AN ANARCHIST. I LIKE TO POSE AS A LIBERTARIAN BECAUSE I KNOW MY EXTREMIST RADICAL VIEWS WILL NEVER SELL UNDER THE ANARCHY LABEL. AND IF YOU DISAGREE WITH ME OF COURSE, I WILL IMMEDIATELY CALL YOU A FASCIST.

Its weird, I thought Texas was a pretty conservative low tax state, but all that stuff coming out of there makes me think otherwise now. I guess the Republicans there are becoming more like the national party.
OH, I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT I USE THE NAME BINGO ON THE REASON FORUM, CAUSE I'M TOO MUCH OF A PUSSY BOY TO USE MY REAL NAME.
AWIK DUNER(head)OOOOO IS JUST THE MOST PRECIOUS.
AND HE IS HUNG LIKE A BAGUETTE. THAT IS WHY ON THE USS CHICKENHAWK, WHERE HE WET HIMSELF AGAINST THE VICIOUS CHICKEN OF BROSTOL, HIS NICKNAME WAS "UNCLE BEN CONVERTED RICE JOHNSON".

robc,
It was a "$736 million [tax] to fund a 'comprehensive public safety plan' for 30 years."

I'm having a "democracy sucks" moment pretty hard this morning.
Trust me!
Cesar, the issue didn't work at all for Allen, cause the liberal media refused to cover the story.
Dondi, you chowderhead, I'm in Detroit, Michigan, home of horrible, non reporting "newspapers". I read about it here. Both the News and the Free Press reported it. As did at least one of the national news weeklys (Time or Newsweek) Fuck you're stupid.
joe: I found that statement coming from Dondero pretty ironic. PS: check out his new website, his views and opinions are very influential and he is a free thinker who does more than tow the party line. A "mover and a shaker" you might say.
Are you saying here that you have no problem with graphic descriptions of father's sucking the dicks of their sons, so long as they are within a "work of fiction"?
None here. Dondi, does this bring back unpleasant memories for you?
I'm having a hard time believing Dondero, since he is a Team Red cheerleader, actually wants to bring up 2006.
But hey, at least Harris County doesn't get a new jail!
We did, however, give HISD another $805M to waste.
P Brooks,
Ballard's victory probably did have something to do with the stadium deal. And that's pretty pathetic is it was the Republican-led state government which actually implemented the deal. I'm no fan of Bart, but his plan was better than what we ended up with.
Dr. K,
It's not wasted! It's for the children! Don't you want HISD to have resources so they won't have to fudge drop-out numbers for funding?
The real waste? Handing $5 billion over for unspecified transportation projects. Yeah, that'll be spent well. I need to start a consulting firm and make some donations so I can get in on some of that boondoggle.
Cesar,
Giuliani's just fascist, no quasi needed.
Tsu Dho Nihm,
You have a great handle!
In other news: Gavin Newsom is still mayor of SF with 77% of the vote.

Zing!
Bingo, my "new website"?
It's been up for almost two years. I'd hardly call that "new".
J sub D,
So, the liberal media covered the father sucks boy's dick story as much as they covered Macaca?
Dondi, about every major newspaper in the state covered it along with cable news. People just decided that what he wrote in a work of fiction wasn't as big of a deal as Allen using a racial slur against a college student from the opposing campaign.
You call "macaca" a racial slur?
It's a nonsense word. It has no meaning. My gosh, you are a PC junkie. Why call yourself a libertarian. You're as good as a DailyKos Leftist.
Dondi, you're too far removed from reality for me to even bother responding to you on this topic anymore.
DUNDEROOOOOO MIGHT BE REMOVED FROM REALITY, BUT HIS TAINT IS TASTEFULLY DECORATED IN EYE-PLEASING PASTEL COLORS.
Seriously. Its like the guys is in an alternate univeese where Giuliani is a libertarian, Hit&Run is filled with leftists, and where Macaca is just a friendly nick-name. Dondi, is joe a hard-right wing Republican in your universe too?
Should read "guy is in an alternate universe".
Cesar:
Mirror. Mirror.
Speaking as a Veteran, I can tell you women on ships is bad, very, very bad idea
Mr Dundero-
I vaugely remember you saying that your were a missle tech (or was it a JO?) on an Aegis cruiser. But, how long ago was your service? We've had women on combat ships for about fourteen years now. Some have even become CO's and one has become a task group Admiral. While I will admit there are some issues still to be overcome, it has not caused the destruction of the US Navy, nor a dimishment in its capablities. I would be interested if you have anything to back up your statement other than kneejerk prejudice.
*sigh* I don't know why I'm bothering to do this, but...
Dondero, "macaca" is a word. It has meaning.
Can you read?
Remember George Allen and "look at that monkey run"? He may as well have said, "Look at that macaca run" because it's the same damn thing.
Get a clue, would you?
You call "macaca" a racial slur?
It's a nonsense word. It has no meaning.
Ah, thank you very much for opening that door, Dondero.
Macaca is a term used by French settlers in North Africa to refers to black people. It's derived from the local term for "monkey," as in macacques.
And where did Allen's mother grow up? Why, in French North Africa!
What an odd coincidence.
Dondero: Yeah I can tell its at least 2 years old, that layout is straight out of 1998! Damnnnnnn
So, the liberal media covered the father sucks boy's dick story as much as they covered Macaca?
No, retard. A small, actually germane, section of a novel, didn't get as much coverage as an elected official casually using racist language. If you can't figure out why, go ask somebody smarter. Like a bag og goose crap or something.
I vaugely remember you saying that your were a missle tech (or was it a JO?) on an Aegis cruiser.
That was probably me. Master Chief Fire Controlman. Eric was a storekeeper. I was over qualified for that rating (job classification) when I was 6-7 yrs old. You need an IQ < 85 to be a storekeeper.

Well, that doesn't surprise me thats the job he got. It sounds about as mentally demanding its as working at the pool snack bar over the summer when I was 15.
You want a demanding job? Try wrangling the panty tables while hawking panty hose at Victoria's Secret.
*flex*
um, just so we're clear, that was a freshman year summer job. I'm a PhD-ified clinical geneticist, now.
I'm not sure Donderooooo could handle either one, frankly.
So instead of looking in the mirror, the customers would just look at your pants to decide if they should buy the goods?
I suspect there were a lot of false positives.
Dondero:
Yeah, but if they weren't in fully support of the Iraq occupation and imminent invasion of Iran and Pakistan, they weren't True? Libertarians!
joe -
There were many male "customers" who came in and said to me, "you look to be about my wife's/girlfriend's size, would you model this for me?"
I informed them of our return policy and told them to go look in her lingerie drawer if they wanted to be sure about the size.
🙂
You know, keeping those panty displays tidy is no easy task. We may be able to train Donderoooo to it, though, if we speak slowly and use diagrams.
My English teacher used to moonlight at Victoria's Secret when I was a freshman.
My English teacher.
Just thinking about it gives me a "false positive."
Diagrams, eh?
Can I grab one of those while I'm combing my hair?
Yoo hoo, URKOBOLD! BATIN'!
But, Donderooooooo was the toughest storekeeper in the whole navy. He makes Marines and Rangers tremble in fear.
If batin' to a picture of a table covered in tidily organized, folded panties, well here you go.
Google Image search wasn't as helpful as I'd hoped, alas. All you get is a wall display.
And no, that's not me. I have no idea who that is.
d'oh
If batin' to a picture of a table covered in tidily organized, folded panties, is your thing, well... there you go.
*sigh*
Yeah Brandybuck, bet the War in Iraq is a hot topic there at the Livonia, Michigan City Council.
What the guy above who has some Naval background is not telling you, is that Navy recruits can qualify for a myriad of Navy positions, but are given the choice of Navy rates.
Shi-yaat! I could have been a shitload of difference rates. I chose to be a Storekeeper. Where I served, (trying to see the entire worlds), was far more important to me than what I did in the Navy for 4 years.
And Storekeepers have more liberty time.
So, all in all, Santa Claus picked up even more momentum in the polls. We libertarians are starting to look like the last remnant.
Maybe it's time to form a tontine?
"And no, that's not me. I have no idea who that is."
That was Awik Duneroo, of course.
He's a REEL MAN (sic).
"But, Donderooooooo was the toughest storekeeper in the whole navy. He makes Marines and Rangers tremble in fear."
and he could herd the sheep faster than the best of em. Don't even ask him about the golf ball and the 50 feet of quarter inch garden hose...
Eric Dondero spam-bot

No, it's more of a *grunt grunt grunt yelp exhale*
Didn't see anything about my Mile High City making marijuana a low-priority law enforcement issue. Smokin!
I don't know. I don't live there. Even if I did know, I'd tell you to stick it up your ass.
