Nixon: Tally the Jews at BLS; Free Hess!
Today in released Nixon document/transcript news: First, Slate's Tim Noah highlights a handful of newly released transcripts related to Nixon's paranoia that the Bureau of Labor Statistics was teeming with perfidious Jews of questionable, perhaps even dual loyalties. The key passage, from a previously released tape:
Nixon: The government is full of Jews. Second, most Jews are disloyal. You know what I mean? You have a [White House Counsel Leonard] Garment and a [National Security Adviser Henry] Kissinger and, frankly, a [White House speechwriter William] Safire, and, by God, they're exceptions. But Bob, generally speaking, you can't trust the bastards. They turn on you. Am I wrong or right?
Haldeman: Their whole orientation is against you. In this administration, anyway. And they are smart. They have the ability to do what they want to do-which-is to hurt us.
As Noah explains, Nixon's rant to Haldeman resulted in the purge of those with "Jewish sounding names" from the BLS.
Speaking of Nixionian anti-Semitism, over at the Guardian Maev Kennedy reports that documents released today from Britain's National Archives suggest that our worst president took pity on imprisoned Nazi and amateur pilot Rudolf Hess:
In 1974 Richard Nixon, the US president, was ready to support the release on humanitarian grounds of prisoner number 7, but his efforts were thwarted by unwavering Soviet opposition. So Rudolf Hess, Hitler's former deputy, dubbed "the loneliest man in the world" as sole occupant of Spandau prison, remained locked up, according to secret documents released today by the National Archives at Kew.
In his defense, perhaps Nixon was referring not to the Deputy Reichsfuehrer Rudolf Hess, but his patsy body double.

Nixon's tortured humanity never ceases to mesmerize. In a way, I think he was the most interesting president of the 20th Century.
Free Jew B.J.s? Well, I have known quite a few comely JAPs in my day...
Goddamn it.
C'mon, Kissinger, I'm not talking about you. You're one of the good ones.
Come on Hank, why so glum?
You know there's TWO kinds of Jews. Damn Jews, and God Damn Jews, and, well, frankly, Hank, you're a Damn Jew. Come over here ya big lug. [hugs Kissenger while patting him down for a hidden knife]
but his efforts were thwarted by unwavering Soviet opposition.
Cuz the Soviets were such humanitarians by gawd.
I wish we could bring back the clause of Roman law that nullified all actions of a convicted tyrant.
Anyone know if there are any provisions like this in Impeachment Law?
I wish we could bring back the clause of Roman law that nullified all actions of a convicted tyrant.
Sounds good to me. Actually, it would be best if a convicted tyrant were given the death penalty.
"I dont understand racism. Why do you have to make up reasons to hate people when there are so many perfectly good ones."

I think his assessment of Jews is pretty much spot on.
Slightly on topic Friday New Wave (or New Romantic or something like that) fun links:
Spandau Ballet's Gold
Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Relax as featured in Body Double

Um, I just got lost here. Why is James Earl Carter III only mentioned in the manner above, rather than by name?
Hillary Clinton in a man suit.
JEW BOY!
Free Jew B.J.s?
Mmmmmm Sarah Silverman.
Our worst president? Get serious.
Why is Nixon worth discussing?
Did you ever notice, like everytime the Republicans are starting to get on a roll, a bunch of articles and media stories pop up on Nixon.
Why? Wait a minute, who controls the media and who a big supporter of the Democrats...
Funny how that idiot Bush managed to get those "disloyal" Jews aligned with his program. A little Israel loving (right or wrong) always helps to keep the heat off.
I guess Milhaus was not a nice man.
Who knew?
"Did you ever notice, like everytime the Republicans are starting to get on a roll, a bunch of articles and media stories pop up on Nixon."
The Republicans are on a roll? Maybe this is rather the old Jewish tactic of kicking'em when they're down.
nixon was a jerk

Interestingly, Nixon accelerated American's alignment away from the Arabic states and towards Israel. He doesn't seem to have let his anti-Semitism get in the way of his foreign policy or in choosing people for his administration.
I think a lot of his animus came from the big support that Jews gave to Democrats at that time. Back then, Jews were the big money supporters of Israel and Democrats thought better of the country on whole than did Republicans. The big money people who in the Democrat party, especially in the northeast, were mostly Jewish. Our present day association of Jews with neoconservatives and republicans is largely a post 9/11 phenomenon.
What's the problem with wanting to free Hess (a borderline lunatic never implicated in any atrocities who ended his career on a famously misguided mission of peace)? By that point in time, pretty much the whole world was on board with letting Hess go. Soviet objections seem mostly based on the practical issue that Spandau was located in the West, and it gave them excuse to send over a military team every time it was their turn to administer the prison, and if Hess was freed, Spandau would be closed. Hess was a political pawn till the day he died (likely at the hands of British SAS protecting the legacy of their traitor King).
Damn Jews. Can't trust 'em. By the way, this has nothing to do with my Levantine ex-girlfriend.
I think his assessment of Jews is pretty much spot on.
The only group of people I can think of who can be "assessed" as if they were all the same are bigots.
So far as Nixon n' the Jews thing is concerned... IF indeed the majority of Jews at that time (as today) were liberal-oriented anti-Nixonians what the hell is inaccurate with Nixon's assuming that someone with a Jewish last name is not likely to be his ally?
Ignoring all other issues, would the above not be common sense?

P.S. It's irrelevant but it bears pointing out nonetheless that I'm Very Jewish (despite being mechalel shabbos at the present) and am planning on voting for John Edwards (in the event that he magically wins the primary).
Forgot to close the HTML! Ah, the SHAME!!!
On the Charlie Rose show, Alan Greenspan said that the perception of Nixon's antipathy toward Jews is overblown cuz Nixon was anti Greek, Italian, and other groups of folks as well. Greenspan said that he didn't know of any type of folks that Nixon liked.
BTW, I think that since Nixon was such a crook and a sleaze, he helped pave the way for libertarian/conservative political victories in subsequent years cuz he bred a profound distrust of government.
de stijl,
Nice calls! Yeah, I consider New Romantic to be New Wave as well-a sub genre/subset.
Really been into old Blondie of late- When they were considered punk-Tunes off of the Plastic Letters disk, and the Blondie Live 1978 DVD, which I have just been watching and quite enjoy. So here's some old Blondie:
"In The Flesh"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sw3plY9RrPQ
"X Offender"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZ6fpSdQQKc
So is this type of ethnic profiling wrong? I'm confused.
Oops, I misspoke. Actually, most of the songs on the wonderful Blondie Live 1978 DVD come from their first album, Blondie and only a couple of em are from Plastic Letters, their 2nd disk.
...well ok, to be exact, 4 of em are from Plastic Letters. Suffice it to say, I highly recommend the DVD and both CDs.
It seems that Greenspan thinks that Tyrannus Nix was just a California version of Archie Bunker.
Rick Barton - pls stay on topic. e.g., "Nixon wouldn't have liked Blondie because their guitarist was Jewish." or "Nixon would have also hated the Vapors because he didn't like the Japanese, didn't want to turn into one, and thought people should be arrested for masturbating." - then segue into the YouTube vids.
How was copper wire invented?
Someone threw a penny between two Jews.

I guess it's still too early to award Bush 43 wins the title for our worst president. Don't you have to wait a few years, like for the Baseball Hall of Fame?
Slacker, you're on a sled to hell with greased runners. LOL.
........because air is free.
Anybody dare to ask how you get 104 Jews into a VolksWagen?
Not me, man.
BakedPenguin,
Right. Here're some with segues.
The tide of Watergate caused Nixon to resign....so here's Blondie doing "The Tide is High"!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbMYwuAHK_4
But when Nixon did resign, it really shook the nation up. Here're The Cars doing "Shake it up" !
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foj81S44_bE
Nixon initiated wage and price controls and our free people protested vociferously but Nixon was deaf to our words. Here's "Words" by Missing Persons!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNU_wyQbAv4
...And here's "No More Words" by Berlin!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWXspXwTCOs
Btw, I think that Terri Nunn is drop dead gorgeous in this vid. (Over the years, I've asked more than one gal to do her hair like that) I saw Berlin twice when they opened for the Thompson Twins. You can imagine what a hot ticket the Thompson Twins were to have Berlin opening for em!
Thompson Twins - "Doctor! Doctor!"!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMgVoaQcL9U
Hey, Mr. Tally-man,
Tally me Jews, 'cause me jus wanna go home.
Rick - excellent!
BTW, I saw Berlin with General Public a few years ago at the local House of Blues. Great show. GP even did a couple English Beat songs, although they didn't play "Save it For Later".
Worse than L.B.J.? Worse than F.D.R.? George Bush the Younger? Wilson?
BakedPenguin,
Well then here's English Beat: "Save It For Later"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bM0wVjU2-k
That sure sounds like a fine show! When I saw Berlin and the Thompson Twins both times, it was just up in Boulder back in the 80's.
Just about a 1 year aqo here in Denver, I saw the Human League-They were great! BTW, I've always thought that Joann, the brunette, is adorable. Here's...
"(Keep Feeling) Fascination"

P{erhaps after all those years, Nixon's bad Karma caught up with him. Here's Karma Chameleon by Culture Club!

Nixon went to China...
It's "China Girl" by David Bowie!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uZETFSmOxE
But during Nixon's tenure in office, Hong Kong remained independent of the Commie thugs.
Here's "Hong Kong Garden" by Siouxsie and the Banshees! (Two vrsions)!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PF0OjrFIVWY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgE41B3JQF8
...Here's one more performance of "Hong Kong Garden"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfnYu2Jergk&mode=related&search=
Note that Siouxsie is sporting a shirt with the star of David. Siouxsie was also given to wearing swastikas on occasion. And they did a song titled, "Israel", as well as one titled, "Arabian Knights".
Is Siouxsie Jewish? No. Is Siouxsie Arabian? No. Was she a Nazi? No. Was Siouxsie vocal about supporting a side in the Israeli government's occupation? Not that I know of. Was Siouxsie a free spirit? Yes!
Terrific musical contributions (as usual!), Rick!
DeStijl: we made the same connection to the DePalma (IIRC) movie!
china girl (and other bowie songs off that album) feature great solos by stevie ray vaughan
a + in my book
on another guitar (and keyboard) related note, i think the intro to cat people is one of the coolest sounding 15 seconds ever in pop music. the keyboardist is giorgio moroder. not sure who does the guitar. sounds like earl slick (who did a lot of work with bowie)
Bush makes Nixon look like the best prez. we've ever had. Bush would make Pee Wee Hurman look like a good President. Bush isn't smart enough to be considered a retard and wouldn't, without a lot of training in a special ed class, be fit as a villiage idiot!!! I'm surprised the secret service lets bush ride in a limo and not on a short bus wearing a special helmet.
As far as Nixons concern for Heir Hess just proves the republicans have been NAZI's for a long time.
GWB will end up remembered as one of the few great presidents. Unlike the craven Wilson and Carter, he has stood up for both freedom and friends.
He has pushed back the foes of America and freedom to caves and to yet ever deeper and more evil efforts to confound us by greater perfidy. But they are not apparently doing very well.
We have not yet won. And GWB will not be our leader in just 16 months. I pray we have the wit and wisdom to again elect someone so strong.
levi from queens,
What?? GWB has ignored the wisdom of the founders of our republic and adopted a self-defeating hyper-interventionist foreign policy that is more Wilsonian than it is Reaganesque. His foreign policy is more of the intervention that brought on the 9/11 attacks.
The GWB administration lied us into a needless war with Iraq and, unless we stop them, they'll attack Iran. GWB clings to the ridiculous "War on Terror", which is nebulous enough to serve as a pretext to both curtail liberty at home and waste American lives and money abroad. Much of our tax money is harmfully spent on regimes that are quite anti-freedom. It's exactly this type of waste that makes it more likely that we will be target of terror.
Note how different GWB is from Reagan, who when asked about curtailing our civil liberties in response to the Soviet threat, responded that it made no sense to adopt their ways even though they hadn't defeated us.
I guess it's still too early to award Bush 43 wins the title for our worst president.
Harding?
I guess it's still too early to award Bush 43 wins the title for our worst president.
Harding?
Oh, puhleese. We should count ourselves fortunate today if we had a president like Harding, whose worst sin was having venal and corrupt cronies in his administration. No one died at Teapot Dome.
