Last Call for Anti-War Congressmen
Anti-war Republican Congressman Wayne Gilchrest's (he talked to me here) re-election campaign just got harder as the Club for Growth (me on them here) goes all in for his Republican opponent.
The group, which endorses and helps fund fiscally conservative candidates, endorsed Gilchrest's primary opponent, state Sen. Andrew Harris, who has been running a conservative campaign centered on support for the war in Iraq and opposition to pork-barrel spending.
The Club's endorsement suggests they have no qualms about targeting other Republicans they view as insufficiently conservative. Last year, they helped elect Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.), who defeated then-Rep. Joe Schwarz in the GOP primary. And Onslow County Commissioner Joe McLaughlin, running in a primary against Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.), met with the organization last week.
Jones, like Gilchrest, has a few liberal positions that his opponent will go after, but neither man would be in trouble if he was supporting the Iraq War. Occasional reasonoid Jim Antle proved as much in his American Conservative story about how being an Iraq dead-ender has become as essential to being a Republican politician as pledging your life to Somoza used to be in Managua.
Meanwhile Dennis Kucinich is being challenged by a fellow anti-war Democrat in Ohio, and the challenger is being backed by the fascinating anti-war vet Paul Hackett.
Rosemary Palmer, running for the 10th Congressional District nomination, has a tough challenge, but if Hackett were to truly get involved, he might draw some attention for Palmer.
Palmer's 23-year-old son, Lance Cpl. Edward "Augie" Schroeder II, was killed in Iraq two years ago. A former teacher, Palmer says that Kucinich seems too preoccupied with his quest to become president to represent the district well.
Once in a while some smart strategist will argue that the Iraq War is going to fade as an issue, that a winning Democrat is going to have to triangulate his/her position on the war and that a Republican can survive is he broadens the argument to "the global war on terror." That's obviously bunk: Iraq is inspiring a national mania that shows no sign of abatement. Quick, name another issue that's cracking open both parties' coalitions—Republican paleo-cons versus support-the-president-ers, wimpy Democratic neoliberals versus Code Pink/Sheehan-ers—the way Iraq is.
UPDATE: Marc says…
Gilchrest has never been liked by conservative Republicans in this district. He has faced conservative primary challengers in the past (supported, I believe, by the Club for Growth). Yes, Harris is attacking Gilchrest for his war stance. But he's also pretty vocal about the fact that Gilchrest is far from being a fiscal conservative.
True, but after Gilchrest put away a series of opponents who ran against him on fiscal and enviromental issues the party's mainstream basically gave up on ousting him. No way would he be facing a challenge for a ninth term if it wasn't for the Iraq War.

Since war production comes at the expense of the production of goods desired for consumption, it detracts from economic growth rather than adding to it.
I guess the Club for Growth isn't really interested on actual economic growth.
Yet another group whose name is essentially a lie...
how being an Iraq dead-ender has become as essential to being a Republican politician as pledging your life to Somoza used to be in Managua.
Did anyone else read this is a Dennis Miller voice?
What ever happened with Hackett's chasing down thieves and holding them at gunpoint til the cops came?
I blame Grover Norquist. He's gotten every conservative group to turn into mere mouthpieces for "the team," which in this decade means "Iraq War Dead Enders."
In 2001, we saw Focus on the Family morph into Focus on the Tax Cut.
In 2006, we saw the Club for Growth turn into the Club for Invading Iraq.
Prediction: we're about to see the Committee for the Liberation of Iraq wage an expensive direct-mail campaign in support of the amendment to ban gay marriage.
Boy, my ass sure itches today!
"the fascinating anti-war vet Paul Hackett"
Until now, I didn't know that fascinating was a euphemism for "my ever-changing views and convictions are as malleable as they need to be to get elected." The first four letters of his last name are an appropriate description for this bozo.
So where does the Iraq war intersect with the Club for Growth's nominal focus? I presume they have some torturous "attacking terrorists overseas will ultimately make us more money at home!!!" line of reasoning.
Saying Gilchrest would not "be in trouble if he was supporting the Iraq War" shows an ignorance of Maryland's First Congressional District. Gilchest has been among the GOP moderates who has called for higher federal spending and opposed efforts to trim appropriations bills. That explains the Club for Growth support of Harris.
I know that Reason is showing love for Gilchest because of his anti-war stance. The Congressman certainly deserves praise for this. But that's about it. Readers of Reason would be much better served by Harris in Congress even with Harris's pro-war stance. Harris is anti-tax, in favor of controlling federal spending, in favor of free market health care reform, and pro-gun. He's much closer to being a libertarian than Gilchrest.
So where does the Iraq war intersect with the Club for Growth's nominal focus?
I'll take a crack at that:
The Iraq War is the ultimate Starve the Beast initiative. Five more years of this, we'll be lucky if the DOT can afford to clean a storm drain. And then we'll have to collect taxes to pay off the debt, instead of for programs, which will lead to lower taxes. This will totally work, because mumble mumble feminists taxes Bill Clinton's penis mumble mumble.
Funny how the "THEY PURGED LIEBERMAN!!!!" crowd on the right never talks about this stuff when it happens on their side.
In 2001, we saw Focus on the Family morph into Focus on the Tax Cut.
In 2006, we saw the Club for Growth turn into the Club for Invading Iraq.
Kinda the way Move On's agenda has strayed from its original one of fighting against the reflex to use war as a response to 9/11 onto a plethora of leftist issues. Typical politics.
fyodor,
MoveOn was founded to oppose the impeachment of Bill Clinton. Since then, they have stated that they have changed their mission to one of supporting a broadly progressive agenda.
On the other hand, Focus on the Tax Cut continues to claim that its mission is to advocate for families, and the Club for Growth continues to claim that its mission is to support supply-side fiscal and economic policies.
Acknowledging that your group is pushing a broad ideological agenda vs. pretending to advocate for a narrow, defined set of interests is one distinction that makes the two cases distinct. Accurately describing your group's mission vs. claiming to do something you're not is another.
Nice, my comment made it on the blog.
"... after Gilchrest put away a series of opponents who ran against him on fiscal and enviromental issues the party's mainstream basically gave up on ousting him. No way would he be facing a challenge for a ninth term if it wasn't for the Iraq War."
You have a point. I live in the District and asked Sen. Harris about this. He admits that the war issue was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. But there are a lot of other issues being discussed in this race. And if Gilchrest were a fiscal, pro-gun conservative, Harris wouldn't have very much support.
Saying that the GOP base gave up on challenging Gilchrest is also wrong. He had a challenger in 2002 and 2004. Yes, he had no challenger in 2006, but I think that's explained by the fact that state legislators were up for election that year. His potential opponents (Harris, Sen. Pipkin, and Sen. Colburn) were all running for re-election. In 2008, however, legislators aren't up for election. That means Harris can make a "risk-free" challenge of Gilchrest. That seems a better explanation than that the party faithful just "gave up" on ousting him.
I find it interesting how much Reason seems to love Gilchrest. Aside from his war stance (and his gay rights stance), the man is worthless as a Congressman. If it takes the dislike of his anti-war stance to force him from office, I'd take that. At least if that happens we'll have a real fiscal conservative representing the First District. I'd gladly trade an anti-war fiscal liberal for a pro-war fiscal conservative, and that's why I'm supporting Harris.
I don't think you can get any more anti-war than Kucinich (c'mon, he wants to create a Dept. Of Peace for Gaia's sake). Maybe Palmer is running for her stated reason.
I'd gladly trade an anti-war fiscal liberal for a pro-war fiscal conservative, and that's why I'm supporting Harris.
How sad.
Why is that sad, Max? I'm anti-war but there are far more issues on which I agree with Harris. I'm not a single-issue voter and while I would like to vote for an anti-war fiscal conservative who is also pro-gun and not a rabid environmentalist, I don't have that option. So I'll vote for a pro-war fiscal conservative who is pro-gun and not a rabid environmentalist. It's not the perfect choice, but it is the better choice.
I blame Grover Norquist. He's gotten every conservative group to turn into mere mouthpieces for "the team," which in this decade means "Iraq War Dead Enders."
Norquist is basically a non-interventionist. He's mostly held his nose and kept his mouth shut on Iraq. His thing has always been tax cuts. I don't see the connection here.
I'd gladly trade an anti-war fiscal liberal for a pro-war fiscal conservative, and that's why I'm supporting Harris.
I don't see how one can be a "pro-war fiscal conservative." Considering the amount of documented waste and graft that comes with war, once you're "pro-war," it seems to me you're no longer a "fiscal conservative."
Given that the Iraq War is currently the federal government's largest pork barrel spending program, I call foul on the Club for Growth.
So if Marc is right and the CfG has opposed Gelchrest consistently before, what exactly is the point of this post and its comments? It's not like they're changing their focus to look for anti-war reps to go after, if they've been going after him before.
I'm not a single-issue voter and while I would like to vote for an anti-war fiscal conservative who is also pro-gun and not a rabid environmentalist, I don't have that option.
The war issue is not something which is sealed off from everything else. It affects the budget. It affects civil liberties. The effects are far reaching.
No libertarian would vote for Gilchrest if he had even cursory knowledge of his record. Too bad Dave Weigel isn't more familiar with Gilchrest's record.
Gilchrest is more pro-spending, pro-welfare, and pro-regulation than Bush. He makes Tom DeLay look like a reformer.
He voted with Democrats to take the extraordinary step of cutting off the salary of a pro-free-market Republican employee in the executive branch because the man had the temerity to entertain the idea of social security privatization.
That verges on violating the constitutional bill of attainder provision, as interpreted by the Supreme Court in the Lovett case (holding that Congressional elimination of the jobs of named officials was an unconstitutional bill of attainder).
How can a fiscal conservative be Pro-War on Islamo-Fascism?
Simple. We see the future costs of our Nation being governed under Sharia Law, and fear the extreme economic costs.
I don't think we're going to have much luck with our tax-cutting agenda with Radical Muslims in charge.
We see the future costs of our Nation being governed under Sharia Law, and fear the extreme economic costs.
Expected cost = sum (over all possible outcomes) Probability x Cost
Cost of Sharia Law in US = big but finite
Probability of Sharia Law in US = zero
Therefore, your analysis doesn't work.
Simple. We see the future costs of our Nation being governed under Sharia Law, and fear the extreme economic costs.
I fear that you'll make headlines for shooting someone wearing a turban (who, ironically, will turn out not to be a Muslim).
Don't. Push. Me. 'Cause. I'm. Close. To. The. Eeedge.
Summary of Doooonnnnnnndeeeeeerrrrrrooooo's post:
Sharia Law is coming! Arrgghhh! Run for the hills, grab the women and children! They're coming! Fuck the women and children, run for your lives! Arrrgghhh!
"I don't see how one can be a 'pro-war fiscal conservative.' Considering the amount of documented waste and graft that comes with war, once you're 'pro-war,' it seems to me you're no longer a 'fiscal conservative.'"
Since the cost of running the war in Iraq is at least half of a trillion dollars, and this does not even count the actual damage it has done (which, if our military is worth anything, greatly exceeds this cost), this cannot be emphasized enough. War is uneconomical.
Reason's got it wrong about the Palmer/Kucinich thing...people in Dennis the Menace's district have been complaining for years that his star-struck soul-lit magic self doesn't represent his district.
Sharia law? Here? In the United States? We're not talking the Bizarro World, are we?
I usually like The Club for Growth but what in the Hell are they thinking on this one? Gilchrest better be voting to spend like a drunken Democrat to offset the inherent fiscal conservatism of his opposition to the war if the Club for Growth's support of his primary opponent is to be justified.
Hans Bader:
Gilchrest is more pro-spending, pro-welfare, and pro-regulation than Bush.
That's pretty bad. I hope, for the sake of the reputation of the Club for Growth, it's true.
We see the future costs of our Nation being governed under Sharia Law...
As thoreau PhD pointed out, that's a false threat if there ever was one.
If you doubt Sharia Law could be instituted in the United States take a visit to Dearborn-istan or Hamtramac, Michigan, or you can visit Minneapolistan, USA.
In Hamtramac you can no longer walk the streets downtown without being subjected to the blaring of "Allah-ahu-Ahkbar" on loud speakers 5 times a day.
In Dearborn, you're likely to be shouted down by some Radical Islamic mob connected with CAIR.
And don't try going to the Minneapolis Airport with a bottle of French wine tucked under your coat. The Muslim cabbies will refuse you service. Same goes for Gays, Blind guys, and anyone wearing a Pro-America insignia or T-shirt.
Best to head out to the highway, and hitch a ride.
In Hamtramac you can no longer walk the streets downtown without being subjected to the blaring of "Allah-ahu-Ahkbar" on loud speakers 5 times a day.
Ever walk through a city and hear church bells? Does it freak you out that Catholic churches, answering to a foreign sovereign, are operating on our soil? Or that Catholicism is the religion of the vast number of immigrants from the south?
As a Catholic, I'm curious about that.
In Dearborn, you're likely to be shouted down by some Radical Islamic mob connected with CAIR.
This sounds like an anecdote. Bad anecdotes make for bad decisions.
And don't try going to the Minneapolis Airport with a bottle of French wine tucked under your coat. The Muslim cabbies will refuse you service. Same goes for Gays, Blind guys, and anyone wearing a Pro-America insignia or T-shirt.
Sounds like an anecdote, but there's an obvious free market response that doesn't involve wetting your bed: In just about every city, taxi licenses are tightly limited. Increase the number of licenses (or, better yet, give them to any interested person with a driver's license who passes a simple test on the relevant rules) and there will undoubtedly be some cabbies who are willing to give a ride to a white guy with a bottle of expensive wine.
IRT Minneapolis Taxi scare:
"Under the new rules that take effect on May 11th, the MAC will suspend a cab driver's airport taxi license for 30 days the first time the driver refuses service and revokes the license for two years after the second violation."
(Previously, any taxi that refused service for anything but a safety issue was sent to the back of the line which meant about a three hour wait for the next fare.)
This seems like a saner solution than the glassification of the Mid East, but Mr. Dondero probably will not concur.
de stijl-
Yes, but think of all the white guys with expensive wine who couldn't find a cab before May 11. Should they be denied compensation for their hardship?
Should they be denied compensation for their hardship?
They're getting a copy of Red Dawn. Gratis.
Pretty sweet!
Hearing people say stuff? That's what I'm supposed to be afraid of?
My god, do they even make enough rubber sheets for you, Eric?
Ohnoes, Muslims go to church and argue politics!
Coward.
DONDEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Joe: I think the issue is that Eric's just into water sports. It's a fetish, dude, leave him be.
DONDEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Dondero,
Answer me this, Do you still beat your wife?
Hey, be fair. "Do you still beat your wife" is a classic logical fallacy, I mean heck, it's used to illustrate logical fallacies.
There was a divorce there anyways.
Remember: It's more fun to catch others in logical fallacies than to make them yourself! 😛
I would love to meet a Republican Congressman who is against war.
Ron Paul is working behind the scene with me.
this is a bit of information about who I am.
I wrote this the other night in a StarBucks just blocks away from the White House.

One.... I am a big fan of the Titans
Two... There have people on the net who said
they would kill me and anyone that has my
name in any level of name recognition
Three... Al Gore and Coach Fisher represent
the Great State of Tennessee . Al Gore is a fan
of the Titans also, I can tell you that I am huge
fan of the team.
Football is a game that takes my mind off the
troubles of knowing things that most Americans need not know.
I would love to enjoy watching a NFL game this fall
knowing that our boys in the Middle East were coming
home ASAP because We the People knew the absolute
truth about BayPoint School and made the Media
and the Government report the truth and end the war
that is based on a huge lie.
Tennessee has a great college that says volunteer.
That is what makes America great. Many people volunteer
to serve this nation everyday.
The TVA is what got my attention as a young child.
It created so many jobs and it was for a great cause.
Al Gore and I are all about this and so much more.
Coach Fisher is a man of great dignity
and overall integrity that is much needed in the NFL.
I have been a fan of Jeff's since his days
with the Houston Oilers. I enjoy his coaching style
I incorporated it into my personal actions against the Mossad
I incorporated many physical maneuvers also by being quick
on my feet like Eddie George and Steve McNair.
Great teams look for the missing touch at schools that are not mentioned
in the press as often. Leadership can be forged from anywhere.
America is all about that. Mississippi Valley, Jackson State and Livingston College
are schools that do produce real leadership that the NFL has been granted
the ability to foster into the popularity of gamesmanship for our wonderful Democratic nation.
I have spent so much time in most of America doing my job of uncovering the complexity
of this horrific crime against mankind and America to learn
all about the people that make up this fine nation.
Football is a great thing that makes many people
forget there daily problems. Going to church is so
important
and I loved it when Reggie White
had the players pray as a unit during the Super Bowl
a few years back.
The Titans are very smart in how they look
at smaller ranked schools to find exceptional talent
and leadership for the field of glory and honor
for the game of football. Alcorn State is just one example of that.
I am praying that is enough reason for you so I can post comments on your
web blog associated with the Tennessee Titans and the National Football League.
Pat Tillman did not have to leave the NFL. He did because he was a true Patriot
who only had knowledge of the great lie. He is now dead and the NFL
has lost a great player as well. I want the men in the NFL to play football, not die
in the Middle East for the lie that BayPoint School is responsible for.
Serving our nation is a great thing, I recommend it highly.
When America needs to
defend itself, it should be for the truth always.
God save our nation from the horrors that BayPoint School took place in
to steal the 2000 election and everyone since then and for being a main part
of the planning of 9-11 with the help of awful people like Congressman Mark Foley
helping to launder funds for the Venice Flight School from many evil men and AIPAC ,
which is under the umbrella called the American Turkish Council, to just name a few.
I do a lot of volunteer work on campuses all over the nation.
I am the American Volunteer for the past few years who thinks its more important
to have the truth known and that I will always protect America, Al Gore and all the voters.
The children of our nation need stability to look forward in life.
We have many people in Washington DC who are so perverted.
We have people running to represent us who not only are covering up my evidence
yet also were in communication with BayPoint School since 1997. It hurts me too
for I was endorsed by this person in 2004. I did not know then.
It's like coming home and finding out your child has died at the hands of a drunk driver.
Pat Tillman was like me in that he found out the truth and was going to be
a spokesman to end the war. He did not survive however, They made sure of that.
The US Army Brass who took part in this conspiracy love war over peace.
Death over life. Satan over Christ.
I myself even ended up in prison/jail for five months for reading an email about Hillary Clinton
written by a preacher. It's called "Queen Hillary"
I got out by the help of a wonderful public defender in Maryland who is now on maternity leave.
I even pleaded guilty to the crime.
Why? I did it because "The Needs of the Many Outweigh the Needs of the Few or the One "
That comes from three great sources and they are. Star Trek TNG movie
with Spock regarding the Genesis Project (I loved that name, it reminds me of the bible),
the soldiers in World War One (the man that would jump on a grenade or landmine
to save his platoon and most famous of all 2000 years ago when
the Begotten Son of God Jesus Christ gave his life for all of mankind, past, present and future.
How can I do now less than Spock, our soldiers and most importantly Jesus Christ.
The decision was a SLAM DUNK, GRAND SLAM,HAT TRICK AND TOUCHDOWN all rolled up into one.
Who knows, maybe my public defender will have the next great Walter Payton or Dan Marino or Adam Vinatieri
The other reason is because a man named Gary Koniz wrote a book about me
call the American Patriot. I want people to buy it please. I receive 50% of the funds
I have been told.
I need a small amount of these funds to live by. I then will be paying the taxes on this income
and I will donate most of it to building homes across America,
mainly cities to start with to get as many of the homeless back to the real American dream.
I am not in this for profit. I am in this because its the Christ way of living.
James Earl Carter and Gerald Ford know me.
Yes Gerald is dead now. God bless his soul and God bless Betty Ford.
Jimmy is a wonderful man as is Mel Gibson. Men who are not afraid of telling the truth.
I will be posting this on Indymedia.org to start with at Arizona titled A tribute to Pat Tillman
The summary will be
A letter to The Tennessee Titans and the great coach Jeff Fisher
I am so glad and proud to call myself a Pro Life Democrat. Where would we be now
if my mother had aborted me and worse what about the 35 dead black teenagers
of which six were from Haiti and two were from Mexico
and the remainder
were from America that I had to see the photos on July 27th 2004 and all the other evidence to boot for also.
It's time America give the big boot to most of the men and women in Washington DC
and reformulate America and make it a winner again.
America needs a Super Team now.
Thank you for letting me tell you a little about who I am.
On any day, any team can win.
Have faith in God, take care of your spouse and your children and play as a team always.
Please for the sake of our nation and for all the Christians in the United States of America
publish this specific letter.
Signed,
An American Patriot that will not let down America, Apple Pie,
the National Football League and most importantly our children
and Jesus Christ just so the politicians who want to obtain power in Washington DC
can still lie to all of us and continue this horrific conspiracy against the people
of the United States of America. Shame on Hillary Clinton and Dick Cheney and George Bush
and Rudy Giuliani and so many more.
Thank you for your help to Al Gore of course and Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel
and Ron Paul. There are a few others also. Signing off for now, A fan always for America
and the Tennessee Titans

had the players pray as a unit during the Super Bowl
a few years back.
Jeff Fisher
