Thompsons Don't Take a Dump, Son, Without a Plan.
Good news, everybody! Fred Thompson is re-uniting with his pickup truck and running for president.
Thompson's formal announcement is planned for Nashville. Organizers say the red pickup truck that was a hallmark of Thompson's first Senate race will begin showing up in Iowa and New Hampshire as an emblem of what they consider his folksy, populist appeal. A testing-the-waters committee is to be formed June 4 so Thompson can start raising money, and staffers will go on the payroll in early June, the organizers said. A policy team has been formed, but remains under wraps.
Thompson has played the media masterfully, dominating the horse race 2008 news for two months without ever answering a tough question. Witness his bubble bath interview with Sean Hannity, where Thompson theorizes that "the reason Americans are so fed up with politics" is that people with cameras keep trying to catch politicians embarrassing themselves. He's churned out radio commentaries that were reprinted by National Review Online, which go a little ways toward exposing his philosophy - hawkish, anti-Fairness Doctrine (good). Radley Balko had some questions about one of those commentaries, and once Thompson is a candidate maybe he'll answer them.
UPDATE: Jim Geraghty fact-checks the Politico.
UPDATE II: You know who'd be a perfect guy to run a presidential campaign? Somebody hip-deep in the U.S. Attorneys scandal.

Dreamed up by political consultants, rented for the election campaign, and returned the day after the votes are cast?
All I know is he didn't rerun for Seante because he was too lazy. It'll be nice to have a president who doesn't sit around all day wondering how to "help the people".
Ron Paul is today's "Hot Slut of the Day" at celeb gossip site DListed. Check out the comments.

Actually, he did run. Are you talking about his keeping his original campaign promise of not becoming a "perminant" Senator? That requires one not to run every election.
Oh, there was that thing about his daughter dying of cancer during his last term. Not that it has never been mentioned here before.
Thompson running is a good thing. He'll keep some of those other whippersnappers that are running honest.
de stijl,
What the heck kind of other websites do you visit?!
BTW, Urkobold called you. You did not answer. He was not pleased.

I'd probably vote for him, and I'm a die hard indie when it comes to political parties. Guy seems like he's got sense and won't try to dick with us for the sake of pandering to someone. Richardson has the same vibe, but he's being run over in the Dem mad panic for self destruction.
An out-of-the-closet cigar smoker like Thompson will always get my vote. Cigar smokers are clear thinkers. It's science.
thompson will be another puppet of the republican power brokers, he's George W. Bush 2.0. Another wannabe ronald reagan with no actual ideas on how to be president other than to be like ronald reagan. The only reason he is so wanted is because he has done acting, which is just about the DUMBEST reason to select a candidate.
I see no reason why he's a savior of the republican party, he's just more of the same nonsense.
But is he a creationist, a geocentrist or a young-earth believer?
Chris S.,
He is the only person who can kill Chuck Norris.
At last, a REAL Conservative.

Why do you people always speak in slogans and overuse CAPS?
Yeah, a pick-up truck by day and a town car at night. I'm so sick of this psuedo-populist, "down home country boy" posturing from extremely wealthy Republicans.
Cesar,
I agree, I'm so sick of this psuedo-populist, "down home country boy" posturing from extremely wealthy democrats.
John Edwards provides a rather entertaining example of this. The house on John Edward's estate could hold a fleet of red pickups.
National Review has other information. The Politico might be off by a bit.
TJIT-
Not saying Democrats aren't guilty of it also, but why does every Republican have to drive a pick-up truck and have a ranch?

Guess you missed that whole Forbes empire. The old man did have a Harley though.
