"Let Us Leave This Primitive Rock, Because There's Nothing but Cavemen Here."
The Boston Mooninite jokesters are free at last, thank God almighty. Wired's John Brownlee has the details:
Fully aware of the fact that they had no case whatsoever, Massachusetts prosecutors have dropped the charges against Peter Berdovsky and Sean Stevens for installing Aqua Teen Hunger Force Mooninite Lite-Brites all over the city of Boston.
That's not to say they got off scott-free. Berdovsky and Stevens completed 140 hours of community service between them, painting a mural for a local hospital. They also issued a public apology, which is ingeniously worded:
I deeply regret that this incident caused such anguish and disruption to so many people… I had no intention of upsetting or alarming anyone.
In other words, "I'm sorry Boston's city officials are such idiots." Aren't we all?
I stuck up for the Boston Two back when the media and city of Boston were flinging every stray brick at them. But both sides of the controversy got something out of this: the Aqua Teen movie was sort of a bomb. (It cost peanuts but it made less money than Code Name: The Cleaner.)

Their apology kind of reminds me of Sheridan's apology to the Centauri after they blow up that cruiser at the end of Season Two.
I deeply regret if the nerdiness of this post causes anguish or disruption to any H&R readers or posters.
the Aqua Teen movie was sort of a bomb.
heh. Nice.
I'm glad they got out of the hairy situation they were placed into. I hope the lockup wasn't too dredful.
lunchstealer--I am anguished because I knew exactly what you were saying. NERD!
The filthy lucre will come from the DVD. The theatrical release was just a formality.
highnumber, speaking of lucre, Oprah signed the deal!
The movie was a bomb because it was AWFUL. I'm a big fan of the show, but it was probably the least funny of anything Aqua Teen. The promos for the movie were ten times funnier than the movie itself. The only thing even remotely worthwhile was the opening song, which was brilliant. After that it was pure suck.
It wasn't pure suck, but it did have a high suck to funny ratio.
Didn't the guy(s) in Boston who actually did plant hoax bomb devices at Tufts on the same day get off with no legal penalties?

Some things that are hilarious on the small screen just don't seem as funny when blown up for the cinema screen. I think it has something to do with raised expectations. I felt let down by the MST3K movie, for example, even though it probably rated as a decent episode. And amazingly, I didn't think Airplane was all that funny when I first saw it in the cinema. Not until I later saw it again on TV did I realize it was hilarity incarnate.
^#, Prolib, pass my congrats on to the Urkobold. I'm still not speaking directly to him until I can confirm that physicists are only people who are thoreau, but the Oprah thing was definitely a coup.

I dunno...
I saw it and sort of liked it, overall. It probably was about 20 minutes too long and really went off the rails (even by ATHF standards) for that last 20 minutes or so but the first 45min - 1hr there were quite a few hearty laughs from everyone (about 20 ppl) in the theater.
Considering that the production budget was $750,000, a domestic return of over $5.5 million (pre-DVD) is pretty fantastic. I wish I could get that kind of % return on my investments.
I saw a couple minutes of a promo for this thing after "Futurama" a couple weeks ago and it confirmed my suspicion that "ATHF" just isn't funny. Either that, or throwing everything up at the wall to see what sticks isn't my brand of humor. Which is probably why I hate "Family Guy".
Should Cartoon Network's $1,000,000 payment to Boston be included in the budget?
The Boston Two's actual statement:
"We apologize to the city of Boston, for we are full of religion now. Everyone, bow your heads and pretend to be serious."
I saw "The Cleaner" on dvd the other day. It was kinda funny. Several really good belly laughs.
"The broom waits for no one." "MOP LIFE, MOP LIFE!"
So far the Boston Two are the only heroes to emerge from the War On Terror. Shame on Turner Broadcasting for surrendering ground so valiantly won.
lunchstealer,
Yes, we're proud. The Urkobold wields a mighty influence with American celebrities for some reason.
I spoke with Him yesterday, and He assured me that His edition of the O.E.D. states unequivocally that Physicist = thoreau. I think it's the capital "P".
I'm not at war with thoreau, since he participated in my Kurdish state activity earlier 🙂
And amazingly, I didn't think Airplane was all that funny when I first saw it in the cinema.
Holy crap!!! Of course I can't knock you, since your qualifications were more than satisfactory, and I was four years old when it was a big screen thing.
...throwing everything up at the wall to see what sticks isn't my brand of humor. Which is probably why I hate "Family Guy".
"Family Guy" doesn't just see what sticks, despite the perspective from that "South Park" episode. FG's cutaways don't carry along the episode, but they are almost always carefully crafted, expertly timed bits. Not at all like ATHF, which is usually weakly written and unfunny when sober.
It would be a crime to lock these guys up. I haven't seen the movie yet, but it should be clear that there was no intent to instill terror in the people of Boston -- by these people, anyway. The media is another story.
Now that he's free, Berdovsky can make little surreal cameos like this, on Boston.tv Let's hope it's not his last, heh.
