Sadly, These Are Two Different Stories
Al Gore is to host a series of "Live Earth" concerts across the planet to warn of the dangers of global warming.
The ex-US vice-president and green activist announced plans for concerts on all seven continents on July 7 — including the first ever rock gig in Antarctica.
The Spice Girls are set for a huge reunion concert this autumn - six years after they split.
Obvious questions: Have they booked the venue yet? And is the monster from The Thing still alive and kicking?

Yes.
And for sustenance they will harvest a creamy white substance from the ice. With no name to give it they will call it the stuff.
Feh.
David, we all know that by implying that Al Gore and a bunch of rock stars should be eaten by an otherworldly creature that you're just shilling for the Democrats in 2008.
Sadly, the original Thing died broke and alone at an East Texas rest home.
Only the coolest bands will play Antarctica.
Yea!! I'll get to go to my first ever rock concert!! I want to show my support for global warming! Wait ... he is against global warming? Why would anyone be against global warming?
Do not mis-underestimate the thing just because you are watching the concert from home. He is now broadcasting.

I bet I know at least one REASON contributor who's pretty stoked about this...
the first ever rock gig in Antarctica
Sadly, someone is forgetting about "Gwar: Live from Antartica".
the first ever rock gig in Antarctica.
That makes perfect sense. No natural resources will be wasted by transporting a band to Antarctica to play in front of TV cameras.
Nothing says "I care about the environment" more than bringing a bunch of people and electrical generators to a nearly virgin continent.
"Nothing says "I care about the environment" more than bringing a bunch of people and electrical generators to a nearly virgin continent."
Don't you get it? Symbolism is WAY more important than substance.
"the first ever rock gig in Antarctica"
...in July. when the sun hasn't come up for 3 months. fun
"the first ever rock gig in Antarctica"
They'd best bundle up REAL warm. Eastern Antarctica has been experiencing record cold.
Glad I'm not the only one who sees the conflict of having a "save the Earth" concert in Antarctica. Maybe the concert will be hosted at Ozymandias' estate.
"Eastern Antarctica"? East of what?
The CIA Factbook section on disputes lists the geography in "sections" :
I pasted the URL in the URL link box of this comment form, no it isn't my work and no I do not work for the CIA.
"Antarctic Treaty freezes claims (see Antarctic Treaty Summary in government type entry); Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, NZ, Norway, and UK claim land and maritime sectors (some overlapping) for a large portion of the continent; the US and many other states do not recognize these territorial claims and have made no claims themselves (the US and Russia reserve the right to do so); no claims have been made in the sector between 90 degrees west and 150 degrees west; several states with territorial claims in Antarctica have expressed their intention to submit data to the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf to extend their continental shelf claims to adjoining undersea ridges"

In actuality, an issue frequently expressed by some eco-people about Burning Man. All the gas expended, all the carbon-footprint of 40,000 people going out onto the playa for ten days.
Is this subliminally tied to the porn and chile threads?
I'm envisioning a "Mountains of Madness" scenario. Maybe Al Gore will finally receive his comeuppance from a shoggoth.
""Eastern Antarctica"? East of what?"
East of the line demarcated by the Greenwich Mean Time. Look for England, go south...keep going...stop at teh big white thing. The line neatly splits Antarcica in two sections. 'West' is the portion with the peninsula almost reaching Tiera Del Fuego in South America. 'East' is the big blob of Ice Sheet.
Forget global warming or any other factors, this is Al Gore.
Al Gore? How thoroughly obsessed with your political oreintation do you have to be to want to see a rock concert featuring Al Gore?
I think people could be a little more supportive of Al Gore. Whenever my middle school friends and I had a cool idea like - have a rock concert from all over the world - my Grandmother would always say, "That's nice. Just be home in time to eat."
So this is for you Al "That's nice!"
Sounds great! But they do need to take the Spice Girls, and Britney, anyone who is a "rap star", make sure they don't have enough fuel to get back and then just forget all about the whole thing.
I'll bet they didn't even think of making it an "unplugged" concert...
Sounds way too much like "Lee A. Iacocca's Rock Concert" on SCTV way back when.
2007 is going to do to Global Warming Denial what 2006 did to Iraq War boosterism.
Hope y'all fing a nice little nook in the dustbin.
Joe, this thread seems to be much more about blatant hypocricy on teh part of Mr. Gore, that about the existence or denial of global warming.
BZ,
Hurling feces at Al Gore for his media campaign is all about denial of global warming.
BZ,
Ignore joe. His auto posting software is designed to make "Global Warming denial" posts in any thread about Al Gore, whether any such denials were made in thread or not.
