Cuban Spanish and Mexican Spanish
Enough of this little gotcha on how George "I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English" Bush had Jon Secada sing the national anthem in Spanish during his first inaugural's "Celebrating America's Spirit Together" event in 2001.
Secada is Cuban. Cubans can sing the anthem in Spanish if they want, just like they can wash up in Florida and be welcomed by the State Department, rather than rounded up by immigration. Mexicans, on the hand, cannot. Respect the law people.
As for reports that Bush himself sang the anthem in Spanish while campaigning for governor in Texas in 1999, I ask you which is more likely, that George Bush forgot the words and was just mumbling along and it kinda sounded Spanish, or that George Bush knows an entire other language besides English?
Don't let the MSM confuse you.

Wait, when did he learn English?
Bush had Jon Secada sing the national anthem in Spanish during his first inaugural's "Celebrating America's Spirit Together" event in 2001.
It wasn't the national anthem, it was "America The Beautiful"
Bush is as confused about U.S. sovereignty as the "liberatarians" at this site.
In a campaign v|deo: he essentially descr|bed millions of Amer|cans who populate his home state as the true fore|gners in someone else's nat|ve land. (lonewacko.com/blog/archives/004894.html)

His brother Jeb! is fluent in Spanish, although Jeb! is generally less of a mouth breathing moron than Dupya in a lot of ways. (This is not an endorsement of Jeb!, etc., etc.)
See also Reconquista is real...
Hmmm...I believed Reconquista was real, until I read that Michelle Malkin also believes in it. Now I have to wonder...
I'm sure that even if Reconquista is real it's about as serious a national problem as teenage girls cutting themselves is.
Give me a fucking break. Don't serve up Michelle Malkin as some kind of fucking authority on anything.
Hey now, Malking is an expert on xenophobia and looking okay (not great, but okay).
Seems everything in the Malkin piece is correct.
Except the last sentence.
That's a pretty shitty cheap shot, Jeff.
Bush speaks Spanish. Very well.
Has it come to this? Reason as repository of cheap ad hominems? That's what the posters are here to do.
I would say "lighten up", Jamie.
I don't see reason staffers throwing around ad hominems on a regular basis, and c'mon, it's a rather long-running joke about Bush II's intelligence, or lack thereof. Also, we're on a libertarian blog, libertarianism seems to attract conspiracy theorists, so spinning it that it's really just Bush II being stupid, I think it's kinda funny.
Finally, the last line "Don't let the MSM confuse you." says it all...it's supposed to be funny.
So smile, or laugh...it's good for you! 😉
Bush speaks Spanish. Very well.
How do you define "very well?" To me, speaking a language "very well" means being able to have an impromptu conversation in it. If you have an example of Bush doing this, I'd appreciate a link.
Jamie Kelly,
What you said is obviously false because you clearly don't know that the plural of ad hominem is ad homines, not ad hominems.
Even if Bush did sing the national anthem in Spanish, Kerry would still have been worse. Can you imagine him sullying our nation with the singing of La banni?re de tenir le premier r?le-spangled?
Ouch.
JAT achieved the "causing readers to wince" level of satire on this one.
Who CARES about ANY anthem? Anthems are paeans to...The State!!! Here I am, reading about LIBERTARIANS who worry about WHAT LANGUAGE they should use to WORSHIP THE STATE??? WTF? Why not worry over 'An Ode to Private Property' or something as relevant. "Patriotism is the refuge of scoundrels"...where did I hear that? Regards.

Greg, you MUST be in Oz, because no one here is worrying about that at all. What post gave you this impression?

You're both wrong. "Ad hominem" is an adjective or adverb, not a noun.
Seems everything in the Malkin piece is correct.
Except the last sentence.
And this one:
Latino activists held up a provocative sign asking aloud: "Manifest Destiny? unless they had a talking sign.
This country was ours?We didn't cross the borders. The borders crossed us?This country is based on exploitation!"
Spaniards referring to Mexico?
A "star-spangled" banner sounds pretty gay to me. I think we should worry about the threat this poses to our young people. Think of the children!
Was John Secada's rendition of the anthem a fairly true translation? While I disagree with our president on every issue, and I could care less about things like the anthem, and the pledge, I think the people who oppose this most recent "mexican american" version of the anthem, oppose it because there were lyric changes. So unless Mr. Secada sang a version with changed lyrics, this is not an apples to apples comparison.
