Non-Essential Truth
I missed most of the James Fray, so my excuses if this topic* has been touched on already. Although Frey's tangled-web defense of his shamoir A Million Little Pieces continues to veer in odd directions (He's now in open disagreement with publisher Nan Talese, who denies Frey's claim that he initially tried to sell the book as a novel rather than a memoir), the coverage has mostly devolved into meta-mopping up: the hoax-within-a-hoax angle, the whither-truth-in-our-decadent-culture angle, the selling-hotter-than-ever angle, the inevitable Bush-is-really-to-blame angle.
But I haven't seen anybody address how the book's subject matter has flavored the controversy. A Million Little Pieces depicts Frey as a drunk and drug addict so unhinged by his addictions that he sinks to every kind of misery and depravity—many of which now appear to have been invented. (Following the usual logical arcs of these stories, I'm going to presume that more and more of Frey's book will turn out to be bogus the longer this controversy goes on.) In the minds of many readers (including Oprah Winfrey), these fabrications aren't so bad because the book has achieved other important goals. Frey argues that he's still telling some kind of Herzogian "essential truth" that make the embellishments OK, maybe even necessary.
That essential truth, of course, is Alcohol and drugs ruined my life and took away my free will, and they'll do the same to you if you don't watch out. So here's a question: Is there any other essential truth that Oprah or anybody else would continue to believe in under these circumstances? If Frey were depicting himself as a guy whose life was ruined by having been brought up in a fundamentalist Christian household, or as a gay man who turned into a heterosexual through the power of prayer, or an Iraq war veteran whose mind was fucked up by his service, or a reformed skinhead who used to beat up people of other ethnic groups, or a kid whose life turned upside down after public school guidance counsellors misdiagnosed him with ADD or OCD or some other disorder, or a convicted child rapist exonerated by DNA evidence after ten years in prison, if he were pretending to be anything other than that daytime TV staple, the promising young man brought low by booze and drugs, would anybody still believe that the essential truth of his story is more important than the lies he used to tell it? Or is it only the ancient story of Gin Lane, demon rum, and whatever new drug is more powerful than crack cocaine that remains true even when it's false?
Clarification: By "topic" I mean the antidrug paranoia that fuels Frey appreciation, not the general controversy over his fabrications, which Jacob Sullum addressed here.

Beats me, why don't you ask Dan Rather?
If you're going on about Fray, can't we talk about Michael Fumento being on dole for Monsanto while writing for Reason?
Oh wait, too close to home. 😉
And if this is such an "essential truth", couldn't they have actually found someone to whom these things actually happened? Even if the actual addict couldn't write, Frey could have ghost-written the horrible tale.
It sounds like "essential truth" is just their convenient code for "Urban Myth that they want to believe".
Yeah, and "Reefer Madness" isn't a true story, it just told the story of an "essential truth".
It's a hell of a feedback loop, where an exaggerated and/or completely false story adds to the hype which leads to legislation and further demonization, which makes these stories more valuable. And no one talks about the story of the guy who tried drugs and didn't ruin his life, becuase those stories are much too common and real.
Oprah and her mindless followers were totally creaming themselves over this guy before the truth came out. Do you think they would actually admit that they were fooled, and perhaps they need to be a little more objective?
Nah. It's the "spirit" of the story that really matters. Yep.
And then there is always the subtext of these addiction-and-recovery stories, which is "drugs will ruin your life, but not only will you get better, but you'll be able to sell your story for millions".
"drugs will ruin your life, but not only will you get better, but you'll be able to sell your story for millions".
What's the time lag between being ruined and striking rich? I might have to go get some meth...
'Essential Truths' sounds like just another example of a culture that see what it beleives...and rationalizes away the facts that don;t support the beleif...call to mind other essential truths born out of exaggerations like The War on Terror...Frankenfood...Global Warming...vigorous assertion won;t make them truth...
Good Point Tim. We've succeeded in relegating many "essential truths" to the trash heap of history. The War on Drugs has been keeping this one on life support far past it's time, but its demise is inevitable.
Contrary to the chorus of hecklers insisting that "libertarians will never be taken seriously...", a strong and widely recognized association between libertarians and anti-prohibition will serve us well. The payoff from ending prohibition will be large. When it happens we will want everybody to remember that Libertarians stood alone in promoting a sane drug policy. We need to be seen promoting that sanity now, so we can distinguish ourselves from all the others who will say "I was never really a supporter.." when it becomes self-serving to do so.
Oprah-world is fueled by emotion and narcissism, not facts and rationality. The facts about this poser will make zero diff in Oprah-world.
That essential truth, of course, is Alcohol and drugs ruined my life and took away my free will, and they'll do the same to you if you don't watch out.
Whaaaat?
One of the central themes of the book was that, yeah, Frey's human and Frey made bad choices, and he fucked up a lot, but that he also used his free will to get himself out of the hellacious bender he was on.
A related point is that he absolutely rejected the theistic model of the 12-step program and refused to bow down to a "higher power" when everyone around him insisted he do so, as they had done.
I don't recall Frey ever "blaming" the drugs and alcohol for stripping him of his will, but if anybody wants to point me to what I'm missing, feel free - I've got a copy handy, and I'll be glad to be shown where I'm wrong, if I'm wrong.
The only bender Frey was ever on was compulsive lying. And he's still on that bender.
so yeah, Frey's human and Frey made bad choices, and he fucked up a lot, but that he also used his free will to continue with the hellacious bender he was on.
I'd like to suggest that Frey's real problem with 12-step programs may have been that there were people in those meetings who were aware of how full-of-shit he was.
It's actually a pretty common occurrence with drug addicts in recovery. For the first few months they practice an amazing amount of denial. When they finally cop to being drug addicts, the pendulum swings to the other extreme and they make themselves out to be the biggest bad-assed drug fiends that ever walked the earth. After a while, they usually calm down and stop spouting nonsense. Frey's problem was that his recovery was retarded prior to his being able to accomodate the real truth about his addiction. That he was just another sad, annoying little fucker like so many other drug addicts.
if he were pretending to be anything other than that daytime TV staple, the promising young man brought low by booze and drugs, would anybody still believe that the essential truth of his story is more important than the lies he used to tell it?
If it confirmed their pre-existing leftist do-gooder convictions, absolutely they would still be saying that the essential truth was what was important. If it didn't, they would be crucifying the guy.
The thing that I hate most about Frey is that fact that he is such a poser. His, "let's throw down" tatoo. The whole, I am a crazy dangerous guy act. Ten bucks says that he has never been in a fight in his life and if he ever was in one he would cry like school girl.
John:
Exactly. This guy was a spoiled frat boy, for christ's sake. A hundred bucks says that if he were thrown in maximum security, he would not only be a prag, but a prag's prag.
"...if he were pretending to be anything other than that daytime TV staple, the promising young man brought low by booze and drugs, would anybody still believe that the essential truth of his story is more important than the lies he used to tell it?"
In a word?
No.
"...he sinks to every kind of misery and depravity?many of which now appear to have been invented."
Inventing new forms of depravity? Now there's a multimillion dollar idea.
Inventing new forms of depravity? Now there's a multimillion dollar idea.
Just make sure you patent that depravity, before everyone starts doing it.
Why isn't anyone upset about all the distortions in the Da Vinci code which claimed to be a fictional book set in a factual world.
To me distortions of history are of far greater significance than the trivial distortions of Frey's personal life. Besides memoirs are a form of art, not a straight autobiograhy.
"rationalizes away the facts that don;t support the beleif...call to mind other essential truths born out of exaggerations like The War on Terror ...Frankenfood... Global Warming..."
*cough, sigh* urhumm...The Free Market...hrumph...Natural Law...*cough* ... Government is Violence...
vigorous assertion won;t make them truth...
Amen I AM WITH YOU on that point
Now that we've killed the living shit out of this straw man, I guess we can move on.
