Bush Sells
The Bush administration is doing its part to save both liberal and conservative opinion mags. According to this NYT biz piece, The Nation enjoyed "a huge spike in orders beginning the day after the election," according to the mag's circulation VP. Overall circulation has doubled to 184,000 (says the mag) since Bush took office.
Same story at the monthly Progressive, which reports that paid circulation is up 72 percent since Bush came to Washington. The American Prospect reports a 27 percent increase since last year, to 60,189.
Conservative presidents are usually good for liberal magazines' subscription totals, but this one has been good for right-wing mags, too. The American Spectator is up 18 percent (the only number it would share with the NYT), The Weekly Standard has gone from 61,542 paid subs in 2003 to 73,710 last year, and National Review increased its readership by 20 percent in 2004, to 173,815.
Such mags as the usually liberal New Republic that aren't as clearly (or predictably?) for or against Bush policies -- especially the Iraq war -- apparently haven't gotten the same bounce. reason is neither liberal nor conservative to begin with, and (as far as I know) its circulation is never influenced by -- or should I say "captive to"? -- presidential controversy.

Bush Sells
Damn right it does. I just wish they'd legalize it and I wouldn't complain too much if they taxed it.
Two separate postings in today's H&R about magazines whose titles rely on the oh-so-cheap "Bush" double-entendre? Once is fine, but twice?
Come on, Reason editors, we're better than this!
damn. I misread this. I thought the headline was Bush sucks.
I'm taking these statistics with a grain of salt, but if they are indicative of anything, I'd guess it'd be that Bush is guiding people onto the edges. Liberal Dems are getting driven by anger into becoming full-blown Leftists, and loyal "conservatives" have to drink the koolaid ever deeper to swallow George being Mr Big-government Idealist.
Other than Reason, I've occasionally checked out up Buchanon's magazine "American Conservative", for whatever that means...
I may be statistically insignficant, but I was certainly driven here by the rhetoric, mostly the Bush camp rhetoric, in the run-up to the 04 presidential election, and I became a subscriber shortly thereafter. So yes, he even sells Reason.
Well, I can imagine what would be going on now with President Gore. He would be hugging a tree and crying and claiming that he was the one that invented pulling a feeding tube. And President Kerry? Well, he made the decision to sign the bill but no wait a minute, he decided not to sign, but wait maybe he is changing his mind again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and---
GUYK, puh-leeze. Those jokes are so 2000 and 2004, respectively.

That's impossible! Bush is a uniter, not a divider!

Nothing like a middle-of-the-roader to divide Americans.
The problem is that Bush is not exactly a middle-of-the-roader. He is a Big Government right-winger which is something different. (And no, it's not a contradicton in terms, except to peopple under the delusion that "conservative" or "right-wing" mean "libertarian".)
Now Bush, Senior--*that* was a middle-of-the-roader.
David T., I have to say you are absolutely right. GW Bush is not a middle-of-the-roader so much as someone who weaves wildly from one shoulder to the other. But I couldn't think of a short term for that.
SPD- I am so sorry. Sometimes I just can't resist putting in my two cents worth.
