and gives law enforcement the power to request the name, address and birth date of anyone they suspect ?is committing, has committed or is about to commit a criminal offense.? Refusal to comply would be a fourth-degree misdemeanor.

    ...that's discomforting.

Does the laser provision mean that the government will be confiscating my tank of man-eating sharks with lasers attached to their heads?

  2. Brian   20 years ago

smacky - not if you have a man-eating sharks with lasers attached to their heads license.

It sucks to watch my state turning into Alabama with nasty winters. Fundies everywhere. Gay marriage panics. Confederate flags . . . dude, you know what side Ohio was on in the Civil War right?

    Southwest Ohio at least.

  3. Mo   20 years ago

So do you think the NRA will join the ACLU in opposing the laser provisions or will they have to get the NLRA involved instead?

They?ll take my laser rifle from my cold, dead hands.

  4. Pavel   20 years ago

Go ahead and scoff. We'll see how you change your tune when you find yourself on the business end of a full-loaded Russian Dazzler.

  5. David   20 years ago

Could you imagine how long it would take to get into a football game if you had to show ID in addition to the security crap they do now?

  6. Franklin Harris   20 years ago

the bill requires all state employees to comply with the federal Patriot Act and any executive order from the President of the United States pertaining to homeland security

I realize Federalism is almost irrelevant nowadays, but does a state have to willingly -- nay, enthusiastically -- bend over and bend for it?

    smacky,

There was a ruling out of the SCOTUS last year which said you don't have a right not to tell the cops who you are. (So, you now have a right to remain mostly silent.) It was only a matter of time before the states started to take advantage of it.

  7. Franklin Harris   20 years ago

"bend over and bend for it" should read "bend over and beg for it"

I just woke up; you're lucky I can see the keyboard.

  8. Franklin Harris   20 years ago

Could you imagine how long it would take to get into a football game if you had to show ID in addition to the security crap they do now?

At college, I did have to show ID. You tend not to worry about stuff like that when you're busy sneaking in liquor.

  9. Jim Walsh   20 years ago

"...dude, you know what side Ohio was on in the Civil War right?"

Well, it was the birthplace of Grant and Sherman.

"Fundies everywhere. Gay marriage panics. Confederate flags . . ."

Ol' Willie Tecumseh had the right idea. Maybe it's time for another March to the (red state) Sea...

  10. smacky   20 years ago

What is the SCROTUS, anyway? I've seen it mentioned on H&R numerous times, but I'm frankly too lazy to Google it right now...plus I wanted to type SCROTUS.

    >It sucks to watch my state turning into Alabama >with nasty winters.

Look at the bright side: Alabama is now Ohio with milder winters!

  12. Franklin Harris   20 years ago

Supreme Court of the United States.

  13. Franklin Harris   20 years ago

Which is why I can no longer fish in the Tennessee River.

Now on stage and ready to party, The Russian Dazzler!

Gentlemen, get yourselves a table dance, and don't forget to tip your hard-working waitresses!

  15. Brian   20 years ago

"does a state have to willingly -- nay, enthusiastically -- bend over and be[g] for it?"

Clearly we are unfamiliar with the Ohio Republican Party. On a good day those buttmonkies are straining to reach mediocre. But it's ok if they suck because the people will vote Jesus and send them back to office every time. One of the perils of living in an almost one-party state.

I mean seriously, Bob Taft? Where do they dig up these guys?

  16. clarityiniowa   20 years ago

So my Pink Floyd "Dark SIde of the Moon/The Wall" LaserPalooza tour of Ohio is off?

  17. R C Dean   20 years ago

    Brian,

Buttmonkies straining to reach mediocrity accurately describes what floats to the top of any political party that stays in power too long. I have lived in one-party states ruled by Dems and Repubs and, really, it takes a connoseiur to distinguish between the distinct flavors of righteous incompetence, buffoonery, and graft each brings to the table.

I firmly believe that one of the prerequisites for political health is to have the party in control switched out as often as possible. Good luck in Ohio. I'd've thought that with your metro/rustbelt union strongholds, the Dems would do better.

  18. Ken Shultz   20 years ago

Some of these comments are obviously disparaging, and that can't be good for security. This bill isn't going to work if people keep talking about it--come on guys--ever heard of the element of surprise?

Adding a provision, just like in this bill's big brother, stipulating that no one is allowed to tell anyone when Ohio Patriot is being invoked is a good idea, but if they really want this act to be effective, they need to stipulate that no one is allowed to announce that the Ohio Patriot bill has passed.

...no sense in givin' all those terrorists a head start.

  19. thetruth   20 years ago

what kind of terrorist would attack Ohio. It shocking that these redneck idiots think anyone is i nterested in attacking their backwater of a state.

  20. Phil   20 years ago

Um, the merits of this proposed law aside, there are two operating nuclear power plants in Ohio, and they're both located on a large, and significant, freshwater source. Perhaps you've heard of it -- it's called Lake Erie.

Learn something once in a while. Won't hurt ya or anything.

  21. Ian   20 years ago

I'd've thought that with your metro/rustbelt union strongholds, the Dems would do better.

Well, in the metro/rustbelt union strongholds, the Dems do great. Unfortunately, we can't keep the other 80% of the state from voting - Cincinnati cancels out Cleveland, and Columbus and Toledo somehow manage to cancel themselves out. Jefferson County, where I'm originally from, voted almost exclusively Dem last election, but one county out of 88 can't swing the state out of the grasp of the creepy rednecks along the rest of the Ohio River, and the Jesus-loving farm folk to the East.

  22. Ian   20 years ago

and the Jesus-loving farm folk to the East.

I meant to the West, of course.

  23. Rod   20 years ago

It's the Supreme Court (of the United States) I've also seen POTUS, FLOTUS, VPOTUS (president, first lady, vice-pres)

  24. BigPhil   20 years ago

They can take my laser when they pry it from my cold, dead hand.

  25. thoreau   20 years ago

Actually, smacky, you don't have sharks with laser beams on their foreheads. All you have are ill-tempered sea bass.
