The Day The Music Dies…
…is tomorrow.
Well, sort of. WOXY (97.7 FM in the greater Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio areas), one of the very best "independent" rock stations in the country--and purportedly the most-listened-to commerical station on the Web--is changing owners tomorrow. WOXY, which went on the air in its current alt-rock format in 1983, gained a measure of national renown when Dustin Hoffman's character in Rainman kept repeating its slogan: "97X--Bam!--The future of rock and roll!"
The new owners, First Broadcasting, pledges to maintain the station as is, and has hired many of the existing staff to run the joint.
The sellers, Doug and Linda Balogh, had hoped to shift their operation to a Web-only stream, but weren't able to find investors to pay the bills. So the site will likely go dark after tomorrow.

Shit.
I listen to their webcast almost daily at my desk. I've yet to come across a web station that even compares.
I started listening to the station online not even a year ago and have enjoyed it immensely. And somehow I missed the news until today, when I went to the site.
Bah.
A friend just sent me a link to "Indie 103.1" in Los Angeles. I've listened a few times, and so far it's very good. A mix of fairly obscure new stuff and older stuff that doesn't suck.

And it's run by... Clear Channel!

It's a pity, I'm sure. KOTR in California was the coolest station I have heard in a long time, they don't Web broadcast either, any more. But the bottom-line is the bottom-line, no money no broadcast.
Radio in Cincy was doomed from the day Gordon Jump passed away.
It is a sad day. I loved 97X from the day I first set foot in Oxford (circa Aug. 1988) and missed it since the day I left.
Finding it on the web was finding a long lost love.
Now I have to rely on XM radio, a sorry substitute for the labor of love that Doug and Linda had in SW Ohio.
FM radio is dying, much the same as newspapers are.
Technology has moved on.
How are magazine subscriptions holding up to the onslaught of technology?
