Tammy Bruce Speaks
A few days ago, I wrote a piece about the legacy of the Clarence Thomas hearings: cynical use of sexual harassment charges for partisan political gain. In that piece, I cited Tammy Bruce as one of the latest examples of how this plays out.
She responds on FrontPage with this piece that name-checks me and Reason columnist Cathy Young.
Without going into a longer, detailed retort, let me just say that when I referred to Bruce as "amusing," I didn't mean to disparage her, as she claims. I absolutely meant it as a compliment.

"...I believe, will bring California back into her rightful place as the state of dreams in this, the greatest nation on Earth."
Why is ethnocentrism (e.g. nationalism) a prerequisite to be a 'conservative?'
I know most people don't take what the comedian cum pundit Al Franken says seriously, but he had one description right about the stereotype of conservatives; they love America like a 4-year old, extolling its virtues, ignoring its faults, and viciously attacking (or pouting about) anyone who would criticize her.
Steve, right-O. You can't even constructively criticize America around a lot of them.
As for Tammy, why is it that every yahoo political journalist / writer thinks that they somehow strengthen their case by resorting to childish name calling and ad hominem attacks? Seriously, she's pissed at reason for being "amused" by her and then resorts to calling Cathy, Catty.
I think it's indicative of the problems of the left that in lefty circles, there's something wrong with calling this "the greatest nation on earth"
Steve from CA,
A further problem of the left is that it includes people who will actually use "ethnocentrism" in a sentence while maintaining a straight face.
"name-checks" - is this a hockey term from the land of tin-foil hats?
Hi Steve in CA,
Who ever said I was a lefty? You'd think posting to a pudative Libertarian board, that it would be understood that there are people who are not Beret-wearing Marxists who can still cringe at some of the obnoxious arrogance that falls out of some self-identified "conservative's" pie hole?
Regards,
Steve in CO
PS I am a Libertarian for whom excessive nationalism is unseemly at best, destructive of our relationships with the other 95% of the world's human population at worst.
PPS And don't you just love it when a French waiter tells you how crappy the US is compared to their country? It's the same thing.
Hi yo Tom in TX,
I have to run to dictionary.com with some of the posts I read here, so I figured 'ethnocentric' wouldn't be that flowery for the smart folk who post here.
Regards,
Steve in CO
Steve, I would still love this country if the Dow dropped to 1100, all our satellites dropped into the ocean, and we lost a war to Honduras.
Just as root for the Patriots whether they're in the cellar or the Superbowl. You know what we call people who only watch the games when they're "the greatest team in the NFL?"
Fair weather fans.
Rocky Mountain Steve,
Keep that dictionary handy around here. Many is the time I read something here and go "WTF?" The motto for some seems to be, why use a 5-letter word when a 47-letter word will do?
I beg to differ on nationalism, however. It's not our nationalism that's the problem. Note that "We are the World" was not written by a Kurd, Pashtun, Tamil, Ndebele, Zulu, Serb or Croat.
So, is sesquipedalian expression under some interdict here? Are we obligated to eschew latinate verbosity? Sometimes it is just fun to use "50 cent words."
I am reminded of the fellow who asked Wm. F. Buckley, Jr. why he used "irenic" instead of "peaceful" in a column. WFB allowed as how he thought the rhythm of his sentence needed another syllable. Who knew he had the soul of a poet?!
BTW - WTF, HTH, RTFM, ROFLMAO - these are not always transparent to everyone.
Kevin
HTH - How the hell?
RTFM - No clue.
RTFM = read the fucking manual
ROFLMAO = Rolling On the Floor Laughing My Ass Off
