Britney Backs Bush
Bowtie model Tucker Carlson grilled Ms. Spears the other day about the national security implications of her lame Madonna kiss. Then the conversation took a lighter turn:
Carlson then steered the interview to politics, asking Spears if she'd supported the war in Iraq. Spears answered, "Honestly, I think we should just trust our president in every decision that he makes and we should just support that."

You can't beat this response:
CARLSON: What's your favorite kind [of Pepsi]?
SPEARS: My favorite kind of Pepsi? Pepsi's Pepsi.
As opposed to Coke's Pepsi.
And I fully support Britney's bush.
I find this refreshing. It is transparently uninformed and so laughable that no one would want to appeal to it as a rational comment.
Why can't we convince idiots like Sarandon that they sound no more reasonable when they protest things they don't understand?
Thanks Carl. Is she, you know, a dope or what, you know? Cool. I would kick my own ass if I was that stupid.
How is what Britney said any different from the typical essay in National Review?
Why do I have a foreboding feeling we'll see her name on a ballot at some point in the future....
It was refreshing in the sense that she didn't try make an actual political statement ala Sarandon or Streisand (the latter of which famously confused Iraq with Iran).
My wife and I were theorizing that someone told her that she needed to revitalize her career and the pseudo lesbian thing was instantly passe. So what better way to stand out in the entertainment industry than to back President Bush?
This is the equivalent of George Bush being asked if he had any advice for Britney about her live performance and him saying, "she should just get out there and do her stuff, she does a great job, we love her show."
Are different things at stake (Iraq v. live performance) obviously, but what the fuck do you want her to say? She's been a performer for most of her young life, she's had little time or need for anything more than a guise of formal education. She probably doesn't follow politics very closely, but then again most political pundits probably don't know a thing about dance choreography. Would it be ideal for her to have a well informed and thought out opinion on the goings on in Iraq? Of course, but given her job/lifestyle doesn't allow her the time to have a great understanding of it, any attempts would probably lead to Depp-like sick puppy stories.
She recognizes that she knows little of the situation, so what does she do? Horror of horrors, trusts the man who's job it is to deal with the situation. You naive little twit, don't you know that cynicism will solve everything?
I think the true idiot here is Tucker Carlson. What sort of magnificent journalism will he do next. How about an episode of "Kids Say the Darndest Things" where he asks them how they feel about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Go get 'em Tucker.
Any comment from Britney's #1 fan Bob Dole?
Jesse--
I had managed to completely block that commercial from my memory. Now I'm creeped out all over again.
Thanks a pantload.
Re:Not a Britney Fan
My opinion is that we all have to keep up with the fundamental politics, as we have the right to vote and choose our leaders in our respective countries. This doesn't mean that we should all be experts on the every word and number in the budget - but that we at least decide which candidate we want to cast our vote on, if any. And then with the important politics, such as the Iraq war, I think we have to get some kind of opinion about it, no matter if we're popstars or politicians.

...Who next Sunday will go to vote here in Stockholm, Sweden, on wether or not to change to Euro and join the third phase of EMU, but haven't yet decided if 'yes' or 'no' will be his choice.
SPEARS: My favorite kind of Pepsi? Pepsi's Pepsi.
As opposed to Coke's Pepsi.
Er . . . I think that's supposed to be a contraction, not a possessive: "Pepsi is Pepsi." As in, whichever variety happens to be at hand, they're all good.
Carl,
Seems to me like she had a candidate and an opinion, she trusts Bush to do his job. If you disagree with this fine, but that doesn't make it not an opinion.
Carl - please, please, PLEASE tell us how you're going to vote. The world is hanging on pins and needles...
Re: Brad S:
Yes indeed 🙂
"That is why the current Swedish referendum is so important. If Persson can persuade his fellow Swedes that they should join the euro to help challenge America's economic power, then the euro will start looking to American policy-makers like a problem or even a menace. America's long support for the EU and for European integration is already visibly ending; the dollar's relationship to the euro is equally now in question."

Yeah, like we expect to turn to prefabricated entertainers for their views on world affairs.
Move over Alan Greenspan! MC Hammer and Mike Tyson will now show us how to balance the federal budget and jump-start the economy!
But somehow, many prefabricated entertainers expect us to turn to them for guidance on world affairs.
Just maybe she's smart like a fox. We all remember what happened to the Dixie Chicks when they bashed Bush. I'm sure she remembers too.
A generic answer like hers essentially means "I don't know and I don't care."
I think I'm becoming a fan!
OH MY GOD. I'm going to have to vote for Hillary just to preserve my dignity
Does anyone remember Tucker Carlson's 2000 interview with Marilyn Manson where he got Manson to endorse Bush?
http://members.lycos.co.uk/lamansonlababe/MazInt03.htm
Oh God, now the Hit & Run Bush mafia is gonna tell us how great Marilyn Manson is.
I look forward to Britney's weekly column in World Net Daily. (What the hell, she's more literate than say, Michele Malkin...)
I'm astounded. Of course, I've never heard a word from Ms. Spears because every time she appears on my TV, a big green "MUTE" appears right next to her head.
Essentially, there was no right answer for her to give.
Had she said "I have no idea/opinion" everyone would have slammed her for it.
Option 2) Some kind of Sarandon/Streisand answer. This was possible as it would have taken as much mental exercise as picking her nose.
Option 3) The Dennis Miller answer. Not phyiscally possible for her to comprehend.
So the answer she gave was the best possible thing she could have said; "I'll stick to slutty pop-diva stuff and just trust Bush to know what he's doing in his chosen endeavor."
Except she didn't say, "Bush." She said, "our president," as if holding the office means everyone has to suspend judgement. Brainlessly falling in line behind Shrub would be bad enough. Brainlessly falling in line behind the government, because it's the government, is scary.
Joe-
Everything that Britney Spears does is going to be brainless. There are indeed many people out there who are brainlessly loyal to Bush due to some sort of conservative indoctrination or whatever. But in Britney's case she's just plain brainless, end of story 😉
joe,
Keeping in mind that she is not and has not professed to be a stalwart of civic responsibility; what answer could she have given that would have pleased you?
It's nice to see that CNN finally has Tucker Carlson interviewing subjects who are on his own intellectual level.
None of this really matters,
as this thread descends into oblivion
in less than a week.
Ray,
How about this? "I don't know much about politics, but any time I see a guy in a suit on TV, I just assume he's lying."
It's hard to go wrong following that general rule.

Nigh Hill,
Are you saying you don't spend your weekends going through the archives? F'in loser. Show some commitment or go hang out at the newsweek board.
Kevin,
Naw, that kind of cynicism takes some kind of previous information gathering of which we're all sure she hasn't done.
Actually, I'm a little upset that we don't see a more diverse dialogue here.
Why can't I find a decent thread about things that really matter.? Like gay marriage and gay rights in general?
And as long as we're talking about hussies, why aren't we at least talking about someone like Ricky Martin? Brittany!? Who cares about her?
Of course people like Brittany are on autopilot. What upsets me is that autopilot seems to be, "Do way the president says and don't ask any questions."
Awful as that is, it's still better than her music.
I don't really even understand why the media expects actors to have well-articulated, legitimate opinions, but Britney? C'mon...
Anyone have a link of the transcripts? The Daniel Drezner one is just the Yahoo LAUNCH summary.
By "transcripts" I assume you mean "photos"
We are all agree that she is Brittany Spears, right?
Just checking...
Ray wrote:

What do you mean?! What answer could have been as BAD as the one she gave:
"I think we should just trust our president in every decision that he makes and we should just support that."
Terrible! A very anti-American statement.
And this (topic) is worth over 40 posts?
She probably spends more time thinking about what color her underwear is than she does thinking about world events -- this is a real non-event. What she said sounds to me like what you'd probably have heard in my day from a high school cheerleader if you asked her a political question, i.e., what her daddy thought.
i thinkI love britney evn more now
An interesting read! I'll consider what you said over my christmas holidays. I want Grand good Theft Auto: San Andreas for Christmas!
