Historical Blackout

James Sparrow has assembled an impressive site on the New York blackouts of 1965 and 1977, and is now adding info on the great darkness of '03.

  1. I don’t think it’s very fair to call my clients frauds. Sure, the blackout was a big problem for everybody. I was trapped in an elevator for two hours and I had to make the whole time. But I don’t blame them, because one time, I turned into a dog and they helped me. Thank you.

  2. My old man was at the Merchant Marine Academy in King’s Point, LI during the ’65 blackout. He and some buddies hopped the fence and got drunk at some trashy old bar in Queens in the candlelight.

  3. This is a great site- some of the recollections are funny as hell.
My new pet conspiracy theory is that this guy engineered the blackout himself- to boost site traffic. Just Kidding.
And what a lovely segue that makes- I have my own pet theories on why the 2003 Blackout was nice and friendly and well-behaved, with good clean fun enjoyed by all (like in 1965) but unlike the mayhem, rioting, and looting in the 1977 Blackout.
