At Least He's Pro-Death Penalty

On Monday, Larry Flynt became the best-known Democrat thus far to declare his candidacy for California governor. He also became the first candidate to be sued for sexual harassment. Today, his organization convened a National Prayer Day, asking the Lord "to afflict Bill O'Reilly with a brain aneurysm that will lead to his slow and painful death."

  1. Oh, that’s an awful prayer to say! Do people really pray for negative things to happen to others? And isn’t that called “a curse,” (not a prayer)?

I just can’t believe that officials and dignitaries in high public office can be so crass, so low, so vile — surely not in one of the most important states in the US?

What is happening to my country?

  2. I have found a new site which I think you will find of interest, you can also enter your comments there:

  3. Heh. Larry may be old, slow, and fat. But at least he’s still got his sense of humor.

  4. I’m considering refusing to be compelled by a piece of direct-democracy legislation to even waste my time participating in the recall (and I’m an avid voter). However, Larry Flynt is just fun. When was the last time a state had a fun governor? Why do they always have to be so [insert derogatory characterization here]?

  6. Sorry about the double post.

  7. he’s an old piece of shit

but I do enjoy his magazines

  8. ^Fun governors off the top of my head:

    Fish-in-barrel answer, Jesse “The Body” Ventura’s fun…

Little more esoteric, Louisiana’s Edwin “Vote for the crook. It’s important” Edwards… what a memorable campaign slogan.

Going back a ways, I always thought the “Expose yourself to art” poster of Portland mayor Bud Clark (sorry he didn’t make gov!) was way fun.

Becky– I believe / hope Larry Flynt’s call was a satire of last week’s TRUE, no-fooling, no hyperbole case of the numb-nuts on Pat Robertson’s 700 Club calling for a national prayer to God to “remove” (I suppose by retirement if not death) a liberal justice from the supreme court so that Bush can install a justice who would have found differently in the Texas sodomy case. No kidding.

  9. Prayer, curse, whatever, it really doesn’t matter. God is just pretend.

  10. Becky:

I remember reading that before his assassination attempt on the pope, Mehmet Ali Acga was kind of a loose cannon with a long list of people he wanted to kill if given the opportunity. He was just a calamity waiting to happen, as soon as the first intelligence service recruited him for a wet job on one of the dozens of public figures on his hate list.

But being a man of faith as well as works, he prayed daily for God to kill them all. Just picture him kneeling beside his bed, hands together: “And God damn so-and-so, and so-and-so…”

  11. Hustler’s been terrible lately. If being governor will distract Flynt long enough for his support staff to turn the mag around, I say “Run, Larry, run! (Or roll, anyway.)”

  12. I saw this as a direct satire of the Pat Robertson “month of prayer” for God to kill the three liberal Supreme court judges who voted against the sodimy laws. (Why he didn’t want the three conservitive judges who voted the same way to suffer the same fate is guesses for grabs.) And from the clip of Robertson’s show I saw, it wasn’t for retirement- he was talking about how one judge had cancer and another was in poor health, etc. Given the choice between voting for Pat and Larry, I think the country would be better with Flint by a wide margin.

“for they will come as wolves in sheep’s clothing”

  13. In fairness to Pat Robertson, when he was discussing the justices’ health problems (“one has a heart condition, another had cancer,” etc. etc.), he was saying that those would be good reasons for them to retire. He never actually said that he wanted god to kill them (I wouldn’t be the slightest bit surprised if that’s what he was really thinking, of course.)

  14. …asking the Lord “to afflict Bill O’Reilly with a brain aneurysm that will lead to his slow and painful death.”

I’m an atheist, but in this case I’m willing to make an exception…

  15. “you guys are mean and wrong. Larry Flynt is not slow. he is smarter than anyone here!”

I wonder if Sarah was ever in Hustler?

  16. I would not vote for Larry Flynt, and I think praying for someone to die is in bad taste – except Hitler, Stalin or Mao, of course – but I do have a slogan Flynt can use:
“Vote for a smut peddlar, not a whore!”
This will distinguish him from Gray Davis.

  17. “I just can’t believe that officials and dignitaries in high public office can be so crass, so low, so vile”

What rock have you been hiding under Becky?

  18. Bill O’Reilly’s slow and painful death? Wow, I’ve finally found something I can agree with Larry Flynt about!

  19. Don’t brain aneurysms typically lead to almost instantaneous and therefore probably nearly painless death? Flynt lies again. He’s got about as much integrity and intelligence as Woody Harrelson.

  20. “Well at least he’s for all of the important, popular, useful libertarian positions. What a boon to the cause.”

    Speak for yourself, JDM.

Libertarianism does NOT equate licentiousness. Maybe you’re confusing “libertarian” with “libertine.” (If so, please turn to your dictionary.)

  21. Woody and Larry stand up for their convictions (or vices!). In this day and age, that is more integrity then vote pandering politicians.

  22. What’s clearer in this San Francisco Chronicle piece than in the CNN story is that Flynt is taking libertarian positions on many issues:

“He also said he would expand gambling, consider legalizing prostitution and drugs, and declare an amnesty for illegal immigrants.”

  23. “He also said he would expand gambling, consider legalizing prostitution and drugs, and declare an amnesty for illegal immigrants.”

Well at lest he’s for all of the important, popular, useful libertarian positions. What a boon to the cause.

Maybe Larry’s so bitter because Jesus already stuck him down.

  24. you guys are mean and wrong. Larry Flynt is not slow. he is smarter than anyone here!

Do give books – religious or otherwise – for Christmas. They’re never fattening, seldom sinful, and permanently personal.
