Georgie Anne Geyer reveals why Chris Hedges got booed off the stage at the Rockford College commencement: Kids today never had it tough.
But I'd also say that Chris Hedges was "there" -- out there in the war zones when precious few Americans were -- and that he was trying to explain it all to his paper, to his country and, above all, to himself. Not only had none of those students been there, in terms of wars, but few of them will ever try to be there. Few of them will enlist. For most of them, the bill for their easy patriotism will never come due.
It is not their fault that their country chose to have a volunteer army after the traumas of Vietnam or that Iraq is a long way away, both physically and spiritually. Still, I worry that such apparently costless patriotism also comes with its own peculiar measure of guilt and blame, not to speak of a strange new patriotism untethered to responsibility or sacrifice -- except, of course, for all those others.

If you want to know why Chris Hedges was booed off the stage, try reading his speech. Mr. Hedges use the graduation of this class as an opportunity to go on a far fetched and anti-American tirade. But aside from this ideological viewpoint, he completely ignored the graduates on their day of accomplishment. It was their day, not his. And Hedges failed to understand that.
Furthermore, attempting to draw a comparison between Hedges and American soldiers, in being "there" is laughable at best. Hedges, in being "there", is no more creditable in his political opinion that any other American.
I may be oversimplifying here, but is this woman saying only the dead (or those who put themseves at risk of death) can be patriots? Meaning those of us who don't can't be patriotic? I'm not sure I understand.
What happened to my Post, Tim?
🙂
Ah. Patriotism = military service. That was easy.
Nick, you're showing your age with that Prine quote.
I remember a time, back in the days before manufactured Patriotism (TM), when it was considered irreverent to have a flag on your clothing. That's one thing that'll really be ironic if they ever pass the Flag Amendment: seeing all those people with frayed, grimy, flags on their SUVS prosecuted for flag desecration.
At least the flag decals superimposed on clear plastic look dignified, like real flags. But the "waving flag" design, with the white border, looks just like what it is: a cheap piece of crap printed on white plastic to save money on ink. THERE's your cost of patriotism.
If I had the photo lab skills, I'd make the colors run on one of those "These colors don't run" flags, and then put the peeing Calvin above it.
Perhpas, just maybe, Rockford College students 'discoutresies' towards Hedges were due to Hedges' supercilious tone. Or maybe it was his gross underestimation the intelligence of his audience. It doesn't pay to talk down to a group of winners, especially a group of young 'uns celebrating success.
Geyer is guilty of the same arrogant miscalculation. 'Costless Patriotism'? She sets the price of being a patriot? (Georgie, get your head back under the dryer and stop blabbin')
I propose that she and Chris Hedges debate 'patriotism', 'the betrayals of war' and 'tyranny over the weak', amongst themselves somewhere. How many Rockford grads will be 'there'?
The price of patriotism? $3.95 for the flag decal.
But as songwriter John Prine says, "Your flag decal won't get you into heaven anymore."
Great title for this post, Tim....
When do we invade Klandaathu again?
