Where's the Orange Crush?
Excuse me for interrupting the victory laps over aircraft carriers, but shouldn't Tom Ridge have raised the terror threat level to orange right about now? We've got seven dead Americans in Saudi Arabia from a daring attack by al Qaeda, staged just hours before Colin Powell was due to be in country. More attacks may be in the works.
The last time we went orange in March it was in expectation, in part, that U.S. action in Iraq would spur ad hoc attacks at home and/or on American interests abroad. Now we have the reality of a serious, well-planned attack and nada. The color-codes always seemed like a cheap propaganda device, now it is hard to see what other purpose they might have.
The threat level was reduced to yellow in mid-April just as the U.S. was trying to show to the world that the situation in Iraq was under control. Then came all the self-congratulations up and down the U.S. chain-of-command about "turning the tide" against terrorism. Going orange now would remind the American public that occupying Iraq has more or less zippy to do with reducing the terrorist threat America faces.
When it is time to take out Syria, Iran, or the Sauds themselves, there's your next orange moment.

"The codes are probably intended for the events in the "homeland" only ?"
The al Qaeda statement a few days before the Saudi attack mentioned attacks abroad and in the U.S. Now there's been an attack abroad. I'm not predicting an impending attack in the U.S., but Jeff's question stands.
Perhaps we're all just getting a little jaded here. Yellow is already indicating an elevated level of alert. It is clear from both actions and words that Orange accompanies active combat and and Red might mean marshall law in the US (please forgive me - but I've lost this link or else I would include it here). Maybe we need Roy G. Biv to help us keep the shades of level distinct.
I don't know about going to Orange for the U.S. itself, but I'm seriously unamused and rather disgusted that the U.S. didn't see fit to issue a new "American's, these places could be dangerous!" warning list until the day after the Saudi bombing. As tim says, aQ stated before that attack that they were planning things! With Powell about to go 'roundabout the Mideast, well, duh... Is the U.S. Intelligence Community and/or the Ridge-ites truly that stooopid? Afraid of crying wolf once again?
Or maybe that's aQ's plan! Let the world know they've got something in the works, then if warnings are issued and security beefed up, don't do whatever and make ABC & Co. (Ascroft, Bush, Cheney & Company) look foolish?
What color is your duct tape?
It only looks yellow because of those rose-colored glasses you're wearing.
"Going orange now would remind the American public that occupying Iraq has more or less zippy to do with reducing the terrorist threat America faces."
Why remind Americans of something that is false? Saddam openly funded families of terrorists as incentive for more young boys to lay 72 virgins in heaven. Americans, Europeans, and other infidels face threats from the same extremist groups the Isrealis have to deal with on a daily basis. Now there is one less high profile supporter of those groups.
'didn't vote for him, but Bush did the right thing in Iraq. God I know how that pisses some people off...seeing red...can't think straight...evil corporate control of markets...rich getting richer...left-wing foriegn policy incompetence exposed...losing support...stolen election...life not worth living...BANG!
Jean,
Actually, the U.S. did put a travel advisory on Saudi a few days before the attacks. This post-game finger pointing is a bit hard to follow. On the one hand, the U.S. is arguing that the Saudis ignored American warnings about an impending attack. On the other, the Saudis claim they raided a terrorist safe house a few days before, and that as a result the attack had fewer people and less weaponry than originally planned. Who's telling the truth? Probably both sides.
"Saddam openly funded families of terrorists . . ."
Yes, he rewarded the families of suicide bombers who murdered Israeli civilians, but what Jeff Taylor said was that "occupying Iraq has more or less zippy to do with reducing the terrorist threat America faces" (emphasis added). What is the latest evidence of a connection between Hussein and terrorists who have attacked American civilians? Before the war, the case looked pretty weak to me, but I may have missed some new facts since.
tim: thanks... guess I'm the stooopid one *blush*
But I've still got all my duct tapes in a row!
"What is the latest evidence of a connection between Hussein and terrorists who have attacked American civilians?"
The latest I've heard of where those docs about those meetings with al-Qaeda. Let's not forget Abu Nidal, either.
Re: the color-code system...does anyone think that the threat level wii EVER fall below yellow?
The color-code system was created in response to Hillary et al's screaming about the public not being informed of threats. I think everyone knows it's a just but they're just going through the motions for political reasons.
Of course, if H.Dean was in the white house, Afghanistan would be a Taliban/Al Quaeda ruled country depicted with a really bright orange warning on the map and Sadaam-ruled Iraq would carry a slightly less bright orange.
...everyone knows it's a joke.
two things
1) remember the SNL where the conditions were beyond even mr. biv's capabilities (taupe, bone, ivory)?
and
2) howard "the duck" dean"
if he were in power, not only the taliban and iraq would be around, i'd still be awaiting an opening for back surgery...
... but there would be "universal coverage"...
greetings to "west virginia of the north, aka vermont",
drf
seems like Howard Dean has struck a nerve...
hey judson!
if you only knew...
actually, i think he did a lousy job as gov of vt. and people who live in vermont i've met talk as if that's the only wilderness in the entire country... so it's one of those kinds of things...
happy friday!

After 9-11, there was talk of large numbers of sleeper cells in the U.S., semis full of explosives stored in parking garages, etc. Since then, there have been numerous occasions on which AQ attacks would have had enormous symbolic significance, undermined public morale, and reminded the American people that AQ was still very active: the beginning of the Afghan war, July 4, the first 9-11 anniversary, Operation Iraqi Liberation, and so forth. If there was an organization still functioning that was capable of this kind of thing, I would expect they'd have pulled out all the stops to do something big on these occasions. And yet there has been nothing on the level of 9-11-- just attacks in Indonesia and Saudi Arabia.
It probably means that 9-11 was a one-time example of unbelievable dumb luck on their part, that the number of AQ operatives was an order of magnitude lower than generally estimated, and that they will be severely disrupted for the foreseeable future.
Hardly a state of affairs that justifies a perpetual war abroad or suspension of the Fourth and Fifth Amendments at home "for the duration." It's time to rethink the extent of the powers "we" surrendered to the jackboots in the post-9-11 hysteria.
orange alert isn't good for the economy, stupid. we're trying to win an election here, hellooooo?
I'm with David; the "homeland security scale" is effectively truncated. If it ever falls below yellow, I'll keel over from shock.
Hence the stupid discussions about whether or not we needed something between orange and red.
Mr. Carson is of the school that believes we shouldn't lift a finger till an entire city has been decimated. The number of cells broken and al quaeda members captured or killed will never enter his radar and the thought will never cross his mind that these actions combined with the remobal of the Taliban and Sadaam might have something to do with the lack - until now - of another attack on US soil. I'll admit that there're probably a lot of bozos doing stupid things within the whole anti-terror bureaucracy - like you, I do frequent the world of people. And we must speak out and fight against excesses and stupidity in the fight against islamofascists. But to deny that there is a battle against islamafascists seems suicidal or naive at the least.
The codes are probably intended for the events in the "homeland" only ?
Still - reading this board (and conservative ones -like NRO online) its amazing how many "small government conservatives" think the government started telling the truth all the time once their guy stepped into the white house.
Kevin, I heard a radio interview in which the interviewee claimed that after the FBI gets a FISA authorization to track a "person of interest" (something very easy to do, he claimed), they can also track anyone that person comes into contact with. If they dial you on the phone, or you dial them, you are now trackable -- even if it was a wrong number. Heh -- the fact that you and I post comments on the same blog probably has gotten me some unwanted attention.
Once this happens, you are included in the numbers of t-ists and cells. Of course, we know what an high number means -- more funding!
Of course the interviewee was selling a book called The Professional Paranoid, and it was on Coast to Coast AM, so make of that what you will. Interesting though.
RS:
Of course! It's either do nothing, or support giving the president power to classify groups as terrorist by executive fiat, apply RICO asset forfeiture provisions to such groups, conduct secret searches without suspects being present to verify that "evidence" wasn't planted, ad nauseam. There is no middle ground. Either you support turning the Bill of Rights into toilet paper, or you're on the side of terror.
RE: KC
??????
Please reread your entry basically arguing that there was and is not a real threat out there. I think you're right to criticize the govt's methods but not to deny that there's a battle against islamofascists that must be carried out. How that fits into your either/or tirade I have no idea.
?????
I wonder what the danger level is on the streets of Los Angeles or Detroit is these days. My guess is those folks are a lot more worried about getting shot, run over or a job than a terrorist cell.
It's not orange because there are no planned raids on bong shops in the works at the moment.
hey RS!
to quote one of the better lines from Austin Powers: "man! what did you eat???!!!"
shalom/salaam,
drf
David - that was my point. From Lefty's typical rhetoric, you gottta figure next he'll be talking aout Jews eating babies, etc..
Mmm. I like the nice, plump ones.
Actually, dumbass, all I questioned was where our strategic interest lies with supporting Israel's policies. If we gave France 8 billion a year and asked them to quit killing their citizens and they said "no, thank you", you would have a few questions, too.
Actually, France from the sixties up has had one of the most brutal anti-terrorist policies in history. The Seine is full of Algerians murdered by the French secret police.
Actually, France from the sixties up has had one of the most brutal anti-terrorist policies in history. The Seine is full of Algerians murdered by the French secret police.
I don't think Kevin set the either/or agenda. It's the administration's declaration of war on evil, "with us or against us" attitude and actions that's led to making toilet paper of the Bill or Rights, especially if you're not a white Christian.
hey!
despite some poor experiences with some french individuals (as well as some fantastic acquaintences and great french drinking buddies!!!), the rainbow warrior *WAS* a classic!
but lefty's point is well taken -- for how powerful the us is, and for the cultural interest in a safe israel is, don't you all think that we could lean a bit here to stop ALL killing. this time, the ball is in yassssirrrrr's court (sorry, couldn't stop typing)... but yeah -- and i do think lefty does differentiate from the politics/ current knesset and gov't policies with the religion/ culture/ history/ special bond with america. and to me his criticisms don't smack of anti-semitism, rather, criticism of the likud policies. i'd bet that he's a fan of rabin's goal...
either way, have a wonderful week, all!
cheers,
drf
That's a nice bit of trivia, RS. Now tell me where our strategic interests lie in Israel. Why do we spend so much money, energy and lives there?
drf - we were soo close when Rabin was there. His premise that economic prosperity, mainly in the form of tourism, was essential for Israel to becoming a viable state. It has been totally undercut by tit for tat militarism. Israel, at one time one of the great success stories of US foreign policy, has degenerated into a debt ridden, government controlled state dependent on outside threat to justify its policies. Israel has lost its vision.
hey lefty --
we've gotten in trouble for our "christian" comments before... i'll save you the window seat on the way to hell. -- just a short trip on I-94... heh heh heh.
however -- the either/or nature of the rhetoric resembles much of what we hear about the 60s. you get opinions that are either wraped up in the flag, blind to any potential wrongdoings (bill bennett's comments fit here). or you get the noam "deep structure this" choamsky who will criticize, just cuz. ditto the euro-types. (check out how france drums up support for the eu... then read the "nazi seizure of power"...)
there has been a threat to the us/israel/uk in the past. there is a threat now. this isn't new. however, the increase of gov't meddling (like post oklahoma or during the militia phase) should be worrying for us.
... and don't drug warriors get more of the muscle post 9/11? (and since we're playing tough, why not get tough with the PLO for a change??? -- that's disgusting what happened there)
cheers,
drf
As long as you fail to recognize that the majority of those who consider themselves palestinian and those in the neighboring arab states desire the destruction of Israel, there's really no point in discussing it.
The moment Israel is seen as weak, she will be attacked. Just as suicide bombing is seem as tactically successful due to the response these acts receive from govts around the world. Silent approval and fingerpointing.
As for the money, I see it two ways. Part of me says..democracy, women's rights and gay rights in that part of the world? If that's the price tag, well, let's keep going. But then you follow the money and you don't see it happening. This part of me says, well, yeah, that's a lot of cash, but shouldn't we give more to the Sudanese in the south? Of course we should. In other words, we should contine giving to Israel and give a lot more elsewhere.
The other part of me says we shouldn't be giving money out to other countries, screw that. Sure, we'll be standing ready for an attack against Israel, but they have to stop holding their hand out.
So again, like with Iraq and the Patriot Act, we often share the same criticisms. It's just the bigger picture that we see differently. I see a threat from Islamosfascists, you don't. I see Iraq as a country that suffered under a brutal dictator, lost a war - just a battle 'legally" - and refused to follow the conditions of the cease-fire. I see the defeat of Sadaam as providing some hope for change in a ravaged region. Probably won't work, but I'm still surpised your instincts weren't to get rid of a fascist. Here we should drift into a discussion of moral relativity, but that's a bit tired. Finally, I believe Israel has every right to exist in peace with her neighbors and that, if need be, she should be protected. You wish to trade a pat on the head from a shiek or terrorist leader because you disarmed Israel and allowed another massacre to take place.
Lefty - I just took a dump and rolled out the bill of rights - lots of stuff about exceptions for zionist son of apes and monkeys but I couldn't find the white christian part....
its all isreal's fault, that makes this legit:
"I saw bodies laying there like dolls," said Sgt. Dekel Shai, 19, an Israeli soldier who said he jumped out of the bus after the explosion. "Other people were screaming and covered in blood."
Six of the seven victims on the bus were from the same neighborhood in the community of Pisgat Zeev, where the bus made its first stop near the Green Line separating Israel and the West Bank, according to Israeli television reports. The bomber's belt was filled with tiny metal balls and bullets that pierced the bodies of many of the victims, according to rescue workers.

RS - I've shared your ambivalence about the Mideast, and Israel, for years. I remember long periods of relative tranquility there, though, and some productive negotiations among them. It has not always been like this.
The bulldozing, neighborhood erradication strategy now being employed by Israel is destructive not only to the Arabs but to Israel's legitimacy and, by extension, the US's. We are damaging our national interest by supporting such a regime. It must be stopped.
also more news from the peaceful palistinian people...

Seven masked activists hauled Alla Daghlas, 22, to the main square in Nablus on Sunday. His hands tied behind his back, he was forced to kneel, with two gunmen pointing guns at him. Then "they shot him together and went back into the Old City where they came from," said witness Ahmed Abu-Omar, 28.
