The Arab Screen

In his Slate review of TV news choices in the Arab world, Michael Young (a Reason contributing editor) notes that for all the attention paid here to Al-Jazeera, "Arabs can in fact see a wide variety of viewpoints on the war." While Hezbollah's Al-Manar is running 12-year-old footage of Iraqi civilian deaths, reports Young, Dubai's Al-Arabiya plays it relatively straight; it has gone so far as to interview U.S. soldiers. Writes Young, "Several regional stations have avoided speaking to American soldiers, partly, it seems, because this is seen as implicitly sanctioning the invasion."
