RuPaul's Drag Race, Gender-Bending Marines, and Legislating Gayness: Q/A with Fenton Bailey

"I do think that we do lead fairly repressed, button-down lives," says Fenton Bailey, a producer of the cable hit RuPaul's Drag Race. "And along comes a drag queen and says, 'Fuck all that.'"

Bailey sat down with historian and Reason contributor Thaddeus Russell to discuss RuPaul's Drag Race and pushing the envelope of conventional taste on television and in life. "The whole idea of being gay is that it's a whole rainbow of different people," says Bailey, who pushes back against stereotypes from within the gay community. "If you are gay, then you can't start legislating about what's too gay or not gay enough."

About 21 minutes.

    Gender-Bending Marines

    I don't know but I've been told...

    The cabin boy, the cabin boy,
    The dirty little nipper
    He lined his ass
    With broken glass,
    And circumcised the skipper!
    And all the shores,
    Were lined with whores…
    The crew was nearly frantic!
    So here we come,
    So full of rum,
    The North Atlantic squadron!
    Higgins, Higgins.
    My Gawd, he had a big-‘un,
    Twice ‘round the deck,
    An’ twice ‘round his neck,
    The rest, was used for riggin’s!

    Ah don’ know,
    But ah been tol’,
    Airborne Rangers,
    Them is more than strangers!

    As any gay man will tell you, Marines are total bottoms. You get 'em in bed and they immediately throw their feet to Jesus.

    pushing the envelope of conventional taste on television and in life

    Yawn. Can we retired this noxious cliché?

  • Paul.||

    A cliché that prevalent can't be noxious.

  • Jordan||

    Can it be obnoxious?

  • Paul.||

    Yeah, I'd say that's a good word.

  • Sevo||

    Only if we hear the wake up call and think outside the box.

  • Hyperion||

    Those Pauls are all alike, RandPauls, RonPauls, RuPauls, what the diff? They all baggers.

  • Killazontherun||

    I was disappointed that RuPaul's show isn't about drag queens drag racing. I can only imagine the paint jobs if such a show existed.

  • AlmightyJB||

    They would be fabulous!

  • Root Boy||

    Troy Lee Designs meets Ed Hardy meets Keith Haring - fabulous and ugly at the same time. Pretty gay, in other words.

  • AlgerHiss||

    To be tri-gendered AND bi-specied would be great.

    PBS is boring? You are SO gay.
