Hopes Remain Low Ahead of Fiscal Cliff Meeting

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama and congressional leaders were to meet on Friday for the first time since November with no sign of progress in resolving their differences over the federal budget and low expectations for a "fiscal cliff" deal before January 1.

    Rationally stepping down from the fiscal precipice is to be applauded, not feared. It's a poorly considered last-minute deal that will cause more harm.

    How can one not 'pass the bill to see what's in it' if the damn thing is written this weekend?
