Republican Sen. Jim DeMint, an outspoken conservative and tea party favorite from South Carolina, ripped House Speaker John Boehner's fiscal cliff counteroffer in a statement released Tuesday morning. 

DeMint said the offer amounts to an "$800 billion tax hike that will destroy American jobs."
