He was the first Justice Harlan's grandson. He was the son of John Maynard Harlan. The grandson did get to meet his grandfather.
Harlan II was more conservative in various respects than his grandfather. His grandfather, for instance, supported the incorporation of the Bill of Rights. Harlan II did not.
Harlan took part in a political science student's questioning of the justices about their role in deciding Miranda v. Arizona. Brennan and White did not take part. Warren, who had retired by the, also did not. One stray bit: Harlan noted justices are "umpires."
