Woman Pleads Guilty for Threat Left on Voice-Mail of Judge Tanya Chutkan, Who Was Presiding Over Trump's Election Interference Trial
[UPDATE 12/26/2024, 7:36 pm: I erroneously titled this post "woman sentenced for …" (likely because I had been reviewing some other posts about sentencing in other cases), but at this point she has just pleaded guilty; my apologies—I've just corrected this.]
From a Justice Department press release distributed Nov. 13, 2024 but just posted on Westlaw:
A 44-year-old woman has pleaded guilty to transmission in interstate commerce containing a threat to injure the person of another …. Abigail J. Shry admitted that on Aug. 5, 2023, she placed a call to the chambers of a federal judge and made derogatory statements and threats to anyone that went after then former President Donald Trump. She also made a direct threat to a then sitting congresswoman, all democrats in Washington D.C. and all people in the LGBTQ community.
At the hearing, Shry claimed that at the time she made the calls, she did not think it was illegal to do so. She said she thought it was freedom of speech and that she did not intend to act on the threats.
In her calls, Shry stated, "You are in our sights, we want to kill you. If Trump doesn't get elected in 2024, we are coming to kill you, so tread lightly…" She added that "you will be targeted personally, publicly, your family, all of it."
On Aug. 8, 2023, authorities went to her residence, at which time she admitted the phone number associated with the calls was hers and that she did in fact make the call to the judge's chambers. She noted that she had no plans to travel anywhere to carry out anything she stated. However, she told authorities that if the congresswoman ever traveled to her city, then "we need to worry." …
The press release doesn't mention that the federal judge who had been called was Judge Tanya Chutkan, who had at the time just started presiding over President Trump's election interference trial. Here are the allegations from the indictment (to which Shry pleaded guilty):
The caller's introduction stated, "Hey you stupid slave nigger," after which the caller threatened to kill anyone who went after former President Trump, including a direct threat to kill Congresswomen Sheila Jackson Lee, all democrats in Washington D.C. and all people in the LGBTQ community. The caller further stated, "You are in our sights, we want to kill you," and "We want to kill Sheila Jackson Lee." "If Trump doesn't get elected in 2024, we are coming to kill you, so tread lightly, bitch." The Caller continued with their threats, stating, "You will be targeted personally, publicly, your family, all of it."

OK.
That judge didn't deserve this. But do SCOTUS judges deserve what they have been subjected to?!?
There is a clear double standard here, and that is not good....
Anyone have any idea what Dr. Ed is talking about here?
Does he?
Yes. Kavanagh got threats just like this, and Democrat Party operatives defended it because he ruled that Shaniqua doesn't have a right to kill her baby at the white man's expense.
It's tempting to say that nobody could be that fucking stupid, but unfortunately people really can be that fucking stupid.
Cops demand and get immunity for far more egregious "mistakes" about really obvious legal standards.
So Chutkan is a democrat in the LGBTQ community? Is that how she got appointed? Under which letter does she qualify?
Reading Is Fundamental.
She's a stupid c**t. She probably lets Biden plow her in her chambers.
I honestly do not know why Prof. Volokh tolerates this kind of comments in this blog.
A few years ago (just before the blog moved to the WaPo), the comments section was extremely interesting. There were actual legal debates. Now it’s just political yelling.
But the very worst are those like the one I’m responding to.
Probably just a sign of the times we are living in.
Chutkan is an evil human being who seeks the destruction of America.
Such is "free speech" absolutism. It has had a profoundly negative effect on the quality of this blog over the years. I'm sure if there were a objective measure of quality, it would reflect a definite decline over time in the quality of comments and general discourse in the face of ever more frequent coarse, trashy comments like that of Lennyk78 and personal attacks. EV is the only one who could do anything about it and he has declined to do so.
You do understand there is a mute function for exactly this situation, don't you? I get that wouldn't allow you to ban dissenting opinions and genuine trash comments for others as is the leftist desire but it is there for you.
Will Donald Trump pardon this miscreant?
No way, The Donald takes a dim view miscreants. He is a New Yorker. 😉
I chuckled at DMN's post upthread...there really are people that stupid. It is true. I am fine with tossing the book at Abigail J. Shry. Why? In NJ, the son of a Fed District court was killed by some psycho trying to kill her (the judge), it was horrible. The son was a young man, college age as I recall. It made me sit back and think through what I would be like if one of my children were killed. That process touched my soul, seeing the profound grief. Consequently, I have zero tolerance for threatening a judge.
Yeah, because there's no difference between a threat and actually carrying it out. Totally morally equivalent.
"Will Donald Trump pardon this miscreant?"
He's got a big pile already but maybe he can get to it.
BfO....True. There is a huge list of people already from the Capitol Building riot who neither have blood on their hands, nor were responsible for any property damage that are incarcerated.
It would be appropriate to commute their sentences. Washington pardoned the Whiskey Rebellion participants, so there is a tenuous precedent (to me).
