So reports ABC-7 Chicago:

When they arrived, Ruba Almaghtheh, 34, told officers she had been watching the news and "couldn't breathe anymore," and referenced the Palestinian people.

Police said she had passed the Israelite School of Universal and Practical Knowledge several times, calling it the "Israel school," and told officers, "Yes, I did it on purpose." …

However, the building Almaghtheh crashed into is not, in fact, a Jewish school. The Anti-Defamation League says the Israelite School of Universal and Practical Knowledge is in fact an extremist organization that is anti-Israel and antisemitic.

Thankfully, no-one in the school was injured. Almaghtheh has apparently been arrested "for criminal recklessness."

I looked that up. In November 2004 Amherst politician Patricia Church took an officially raised Puerto Rico flag from public property to her home because she thought it was a Texas flag. Police declined to prosecute. A newspaper report from 2016 states

(B) the person committed aggressive driving (as defined in IC 9-21-8-55) that results in serious bodily injury to another person;  or

(A) it is committed by shooting a firearm into an inhabited dwelling or other building or place where people are likely to gather;  or

(B) the person committed aggressive driving (as defined in IC 9-21-8-55) that results in the death or catastrophic injury of another person."

It would appear to be the correct charge, based on her actions.

She attacked a school, slamming her car into the building for explicitly political reasons. I see no lesser charge as commensurate with such an act.

I wouldn't suggest that, because I'm pretty hard core about the federal government not having general police powers. But the local police in arresting her called her a terrorist, and I would not be shocked if they contacted the feds to request such a prosecution.

I would be surprised if it happened, though, in a case where there doesn't appear to have been much in the way of premeditation, and no casualties.

Attempted manslaughter of an unknown person - albeit inept? or something similar . Granted it can be difficult to find the most applicable statute for criminal actions.

It would appear to me that she could be charged under the level 6 felony version of it, because a car qualifies as a deadly weapon. Up to 2.5 years in prison and a $10K fine.
