FSK.
Yes. I was totally surprised by that historical tidbit.
But don't overlook this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Devil_and_Daniel_Webster
Another hint: He was a slave-owning piece of shit whose racism seems to have infused the lyrics.
What?
I should have logged in so I didn't have to read Kirkland, but I messed up, and now I have to go take a shower. Anyway, FSK wrote about how the British soldiers were "hirelings and slaves" (poetic for "the scum of the earth, enlisted for drink" as their own commander put it), in contrast to the free American militiamen. Kirkland doesn't really know how to read critically or analytically, but when he sees the word "slave," great klaxons blaring "racist, racist, racist" go off in his brain.
Whether or not it infused the lyrics, his racism is undeniable. https://theconversation.com/francis-scott-key-one-of-the-anti-slavery-movements-great-villains-165297
Plenty of artists are unworthy of their own art.
Just change "slave" to "knave" in verse three and save the anthem as a whole.
With that one tweak, the third verse could proudly be honored as the most "metal" part of the National Anthem:
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and [knave],
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O'er the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.
I’ll give you this much, “Reverend”, I mean “Coach”.
You’re certainly the authority in Piece of Shit Raceists
So when Joe Pa farted did the other coaches joke with him about it, like real men do, or did everyone just turn a blind nose to it, and pretend not to notice, like they did with umm, certain other "Activities" at Penn State
Frank
Oh say, who you talking about? By the dawn's early light, I can't see it.
Haven't been to movies much in the last 10 years (not worried about the Vid', but the movies suck, last one was "Top Gun Maverick" which was actually pretty good, with the audience giving a standing "O" at the end, (In California!!!! OK, Fresno, and with a mostly Navy/Marine Corpse audience)
But wonder if they still play the Anthem at our Military Base Theaters? and woe begone to the A-hole who not only didn't stand, but didn't but his hand over his heart...
FSK gets a bit Mid-Evil in the rarely heard Deep-Cut Version of the Anthem...
"On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,....
....And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps pollution...."
Frank "Play Ball!!!!!"
Don’t forget Francis Scott Key’s son, who died because he wouldn’t keep it in his pants.

Philip's killer, the cuckolded husband Dan Sickles, killed Philip and got off (so to speak) based on temporary insanity. Having symbolically regained his manhood, Sickles lost a leg fighting for the Union at Gettysburg. A far more honorable loss.
