There's an interesting section of that excellent, and much maligned tome The Bell Curve (which mostly has zip to do with race) - which addresses the Army's use of IQ tests to sort drafted recruits into different jobs. As you would expect, the more technical the job, the higher the IQ required, and there was a general, though not universal, statistical rule that the higher the recruit's IQ was in relation to the required minimum IQ for the job, the better he would perform. Quelle surprise.

But the exception was combat infantry. Yes, you still needed a reasonable IQ to work the weapons and understand your orders. But above that, extra IQ points didn't make you any better as a soldier, indeed marginally the reverse was the case.

From which one deduces that when going into combat, you really don't want to overthink what's about to happen.

Of course these stats are from a long time ago, and the infantry has got a lot more technically sophisticated, so the old rule may no longer apply.

But anyway, dont mess with a Momma Bear when she's defending her cubs. Yes, she may be too dumb to know that you're holding a rifle, but the fact that you are doesn't guarantee that you're going to be able stop her before she lands on you.
