"Strangers on the Internet" Podcast Episode 13: A False Sense of Safety
Midwestern graduate student Lisa (a pseudonym) talks dating safety
The thirteenth episode (Apple Podcasts link here and Spotify link here) of Strangers on the Internet with co-host and psychologist Michelle Lange has us chatting with Midwestern graduate student Lisa (a pseudonym) about all things physical safety.
Lisa shares her experiences with being stalked, owning a gun, conducting background checks before every date, and having to take out restraining orders. Find out how people who lie about their age on dating apps sometimes do so for much more nefarious reasons than you might expect, and listen to Lisa dish about why dating fellow academics might not be all roses! You will walk away with new insights and important safety tips from a guest who has seen it all.

He's lying about his age to avoid prespecified search filters?
And why is it unreasonable for someone (male or female, straight or gay) to have age limits? "Age is just a number" until it isn't. I'm turning 51 a couple weeks, so while I might prefer to date women in the 30's, if they don't want to date someone my age, I won't begrudge them that or lie to them and say I'm 41.
In real life, pre-Internet, you met somebody first and found out age later. Filtering by age is only about a twenty year old tradition.
Of course, women are famous about never lying about their age.
My thought exactly!
The reason why I would never even consider these dating apps is that the women tend to have a "world revolves around me" attitude and the question that I bluntly ask myself is "why would any man want them?".
Of course, women are famous about never lying about their age.
Right, and this tells us what about this interview? Maybe when we listen to the podcast (ha!) we will find out that Lisa and/or the hosts talk about both men and women that lie about their ages when dating.
Remembering the old Friends episode, where both Monica and her boyfriend lied about their age...
This all makes the system of families negotiating marriage on their children's behalf look a lot better.
