Johnson was Thomas Jefferson's first appointment to the Court. He replaced Adams appointee Alfred Moore, who chief claim to judicial fame is authoring a grand total of one opinion during his four years on the Court. Bas v. Tingy, 4 U.S. (4 Dall.) 37 (1800).
