Today in Supreme Court History: September 20, 1968
9/20/1968: The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission denied a certificate of no exterior effect to the Penn Central Transportation Co. The Supreme Court found that the City of New York did not violate the Takings Clause in Penn Central Transportation Co. v. New York (1978).

That would have been some tower. I remember the drawing shown on the news.
Ironically not many people notice the exterior of Grand Central. With the Park Avenue bridge in the way it’s not very visible. They notice the huge interior space, which the tower would not have affected — the star paintings on the ceiling, the famous cock in the middle.
