#MeToo/#TheyLied Among the Communists / "Anti-Fascists" / Left Anarchists
Christopher Helali, recent Communist Party candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Vermont, has just filed a libel lawsuit against his "anarkata" ex-girlfriend and also Peter Soeller of the "anti-fascist" Fashbusters. See the Complaint, and the exhibits. The alleged libels include allegations of rape, as well as a claim that Helali embezzled $4500 from the Industrial Workers of the World; now there's a name from the past.

I went to the "anarka" link and couldn't understand a single sentence.
In other words, it is self-indulgent BS.
Poor dude was raped. Tsk, tsk.
I am not speaking to this allegation, but in general.
It's a real problem in higher ed when the guy is (a) drunk and (b) not interested in the woman, but she persists. It's not as common as the other way around, but it happens a lot...

He redacts the daughter's name then reproduces a tweet which contains it.
Wow....
I'm guessing he wins this one...
The complaint does make the defendants' behavior sound outrageous. On the other hand, even though the messages from his ex look compelling, his complaint is entirely his side of the story. He presumably would not use it to admit to any ethically grey areas or context that casts a better light on those messages. And presumably, the defendants will take advantage of discovery to try to substantiate the claims of embezzlement.
That lawsuit looks to be a hot mess, and a good example of why one should try to avoid litigation whenever possible....
Yeah who would have thought that crazies that spend their time literally dedicated to seeking to bring ruin to other people's lives for expressing different/unpopular opinions are not very nice themselves!
I didn't even know the Wobblies had $4500 to embezzle.
Maybe there should be a “full court costs” option with say $50/hr per juror and maybe $250/hr for the judge and something for the bailiff, reporter, etc., maybe $500/hr or so total.
In certain cases, maybe the parties should be charged the costs of society being brought in to sort out there problems.
I think wealthy corporations who do lawsuits as business tactics might be good candidates.
But every now and then, you get ordinary-seeming people, sometimes colorful, sometimes not, who just can’t seem to help themselves avoid getting into acrimonious disputes with those around them.
Lightening their wallets probably wouldn’t help them with their problem. But it would at least help make them aware of their impact on others.
Lawsuits under the the Helms-Burton act are subject to a $6,800 surcharge meant to recover the true cost to the court of hearing a civil case.
Sorry, $1000/hr or so total.
C'mon Prof. Volokh.
Do you really need to foist this kind of garbage on us?

Just wait until these people take over...
I was especially irritated when he came to my house and held a gun to my head, forcing me to read his entry and click the links therein.
WuzYoungOnceToo: Yeah, I feel I overstepped that time.
