I hate to apply modern standards to past people. But, he could not read the plain language of the constitution.
So, he'd be a Democrat now.
"I developed an expertise on maritime law, but do they call me Justice Brown, the maritime-law expert? No...
"But uphold one lousy segregation law, and I'm forever Justice Brown of Plessy v. Ferguson."
