Actually, does anyone know how we figured out COVID-19 came from bats?

The genetic sequence is extremely similar to viruses circulating in bats. Including those previously worked on by researchers coincidentally located close to the market where patient zero supposedly got it by chowing down on a bat burger.

DTRA also researches bat coronaviruses; seems they were onto something.

They have a big database of sequences. You can align sequences and based on similarities and the biological context backdeduce a fambly tree. Thats what they use to guess at evolutionary history and how animals are related to each other by looking at certain characteristic sequences. As for whether it came from eating bat. Its just the theory the mainstream authorities decided to settle on due to the initial disease spread and probably in part because it was the least embarrassing of options. I personally favor the escaped lab experiment hypothesis.

It wouldn't even have to be an escaped lab experiment. Supposedly the lab in Wuhan was researching corona virus vaccines using bats. There were also reports that they had safety incidents involving researchers and/or techs getting bit by the bats.

It's not unreasonable to think the lab employees shopped at the implicated wet market.

Lab employee gets COVID from bat bite then spreads it to other humans while shopping at the wet market.

That fits the known facts as well as assuming people were eating infected bats.

We don't know, for sure. Some scientists say the evidence strongly suggests COVID was made in a lab in China.

This particular bat is probably as important to the people there as the Puffins are to folk in Penobscot Bay (ME). It's like commemorative stamps, back when people used to use stamps. Of all the stuff the government wastes money on, this is insignificant.
