Coolidge is the last, great GOP President. He was the calm before the socialist storm that has engulfed this country.
No, both Wilson and Teddy Roosevelt had their socialist tendencies, and Lincoln definitely expanded the Federal government.
Conversely, there is a lot of Coolidge in Trump once you get beyond the difference of coming of age in 19th Century Vermont versus New York City of the 1980's.
Definitely. But I don't really see him as last/best GOP president a as much as the last/best constitutional conservative. He's the actual embodiment of minimizing the size and scope of government that modern conservatives pretend Ronald Reagan was.
Reportedly he took the initial oath of office in Vermont by the light of a kerosene lamp. How America has changed in 97 years....
Damn fine president.
A man of few words. The anti-Josh.
I have always loved that anecdote about the time he was sitting next to a woman at some function @ the white house. The woman said she made a bet with a friend that she could get Coolidge to say three words to her & his only reply was "you lose"
"Oh Mr. Coolidge, if you could only be President again, it would be the end of this horrible Depression!"
"It would be the beginning of mine."
Google the Coolidge Effect, if you aren't familiar with the story. He certainly had a sharp sense of humor.
