Today in Supreme Court History: April 12, 1945

4/12/1945: President Harry Truman's inauguration. He would make four appointments to the Supreme Court: Chief Justice Vinson, and Justices Burton, Clark, and Minton.

Justice Clark's last name is spelled "Clark." A reason many people know that is that his son, Ramsey Clark, was a significantly unsuccessful Attorney General under Lyndon Johnson, and the fact that Ramsey was being appointed AG was an excuse Johnson used to get Tom Clark off the Court.
Which led to Thurgood Marshall's appointment, so in Clark's case LBJ chicanery turned out to be a good thing.

Texas has produced many congressional leaders and (as measured by primary affiliation, rather than birthplace) three presidents (LBJ, Bush-41 & Bush-43). But Texas has been, and remains, woefully unrepresented on the SCOTUS bench — Associate Justice Tom Clark, referenced above, being the only member from the Lone Star State.
