"How to Read a Legal Opinion"

With the new academic year a few weeks away, I thought I would re-post a link to my short essay, "How to Read A Legal Opinion: A Guide for New Law Students." Here's the abstract:

This essay is designed to help new law students prepare for the first few weeks of class. It explains what judicial opinions are, how they are structured, and what law students should look for when reading them.

The essay is published under a Creative Commons license that allows reproduction for non-commercial purposes. So if you're a professor who wants to copy the work for class, go ahead. No need to ask.
