What Happens Next in the Israel-Hamas War?
Join Reason on YouTube and Facebook at 1p.m. Eastern this Thursday for a discussion about the Hamas attack on Israel with terrorism scholar Max Abrahms.
"The first thing smart militants do is recognize that civilian attacks are a recipe for political failure," writes Max Abrahms, a political science professor at Northeastern University and author of Rules for Rebels: The Science of Victory in Militant History, a lengthy study of terrorism and insurgency. "You might say that the first rule for rebels is to not use terrorism at all."
It's for this reason that Abrahms believes that Hamas' brutal attack on Israeli civilians is not only immoral but "a major strategic mistake" for the Palestinian cause. Abrahms traveled to the West Bank shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks amid a wave of Palestinian terrorism known as the "Second Intifada." What he found became the subject of his dissertation. While a previous influential study had concluded that Palestinian terrorism often resulted in "success" in achieving "significant territorial concessions," what Abrahms discovered by talking with Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank is that the terrorism "eroded support for territorial concessions while creating support for a fence" and likely blocked the possibility of independent statehood.
Join Reason's Zach Weissmueller and Liz Wolfe this Thursday at 1 p.m. Eastern on Reason's YouTube channel or Facebook page for a live discussion with Abrahms about how the lessons of his work apply to the current Israel-Hamas war, what is likely to happen to Gaza in the short- and long-term, and what the role of the U.S. should and shouldn't be in the conflict.

My guess is Fiona uses it as an excuse to promote Charles Koch's gimme cheap imported labor immigration policy. So, same as the Russia-Ukraine war. 🙂

Zach, Liz....This is not difficult.
One, there is no world in which Hamas and Israel can coexist side-by-side, in peace.
Two, Oslo, Disengagement, and Management (mowing the lawn) are policy failures.
Three, a stated war aim of Israel must be the physical obliteration of Hamas within Gaza.
Four, Americans were murdered, Americans have been taken hostage. We have a dog in this fight.
It ain't rocket science. Either there is Israel, or there is Hamas. There cannot be both. We know that now. I hope Israel sends all those Hamas Homos to the One Way Train to Paradise. I will not weep for Hamas.
As for Gazan civilians: Leave Gaza immediately, if you value your life.
How Israel Went From Helping Create Hamas to Bombing It
History of Hamas
This is not a conspiracy theory. Sheik Yassin was a blind crippled Muslim Brotherhood Palestinian in Gaza when it was ruled by Egypt. When Egypt was repressing the Muslim Brotherhood. After 1967 when Israel took Gaza, roughly the late 1970's, Israel started funding Yassin as a way to play divide-and-conquer re Palestinians. Yassin later turned that (mostly religious/charity stuff) into Hamas (above plus an armed wing) in the late 1980's during the First Intifada.
Yassin was assassinated by Israel in the early 2000's - an act which created massive street cred in Gaza for Hamas just before their 2006 election.
Again, this is not conspiracy theory. Yitzhak Segev (the military governor of Gaza in the early 1980's), Yassir Arafat, Avner Cohen (a religious affairs official who worked in Gaza), all admitted that and were open in talking to reporters/etc. This is what Ron Paul was referring to when he made his speech in Congress.
Great, let's assume it is all true, JFree. All fine and good. So what.
Hamas crossed the border on Simchat Torah, and started this war. Israel will now end it. Anything less than the physical obliteration of Hamas within Gaza is an unacceptable outcome.
Gaza civilians need to leave Gaza immediately, if they value their life. Leave now.
Gaza civilians need to leave Gaza immediately, if they value their life. Leave now.
Do you even remotely understand how unreal that demand is? They are hostages twice over – hostages and human shields to Hamas and hostages to Israel and are in a prison camp. And half of them are children. In a location with the population density of Hong Kong or Singapore.
If you really are that interested in that sort of shit show, then YOU go over and do whatever. Not on my dime and not in my name.
If Hamas is preventing them from leaving, that's on Hamas. Is Israel preventing them from leaving? Or warning them in advance of their strikes?
The only reason that half of them are children is because the Hamas strategy is to outbreed their neighbors.
Calling all under 18s children is a bit misleading too. Teenagers are quite susceptible to ideology and capable of violence. I'm sure there are plenty of 14-18 yo militants (if not younger).
I suppose you haven't noticed, but Gaza civilians aren't free to leave Gaza. Not immediately. Not next year or last year. There is a wall and Israelis with guns waiting for anyone foolish enough to take your advice.
There is more than one border...
You really are a bright bulb aren't you. That entire half of Sinai is demilitarized by the peace treaty with Egypt. That means there is a power vacuum with 15 militant groups filling it - including both AlQaeda and Islamic State. Those are who build the tunnels across that border into Gaza. Btw - only people approved by Israel are allowed through that border - and border crossings also require the exit to be staffed by - in this case presumably Hamas - security who are of course going to be continually attacked by the Israelis.
So your bright idea is for unarmed children to head through the middle of an active battle, cross a border into a desert that is empty of most everything but AlQaeda and ISIS so they can spend the next 40 years wandering the Sinai in order to return back to a land that I'm sure they will decide has been Promised to them this time. Angry, very well-trained and with nothing to lose.
What could possibly go wrong?
Hey now! Don't insult either Gays or Homo Sapiens by equating them with Hamas.
Beyond that, take no prisoners!
Yeah, I like the idea of telling the Gaza civilians to "just leave now", but how? To where?
It sounds good, but you're talking about 2 million people.
I don't have a solution, but that won't stop me from agreeing that Israel should clobber Hamas hard. But there will be many innocents caught in the mess.
Sunday-Tuesday every civilian not actively hostile to Israel and/or supportive of Hamas moves to the South half of Gaza. Targeted vaporization of the remaining forces ensues in the North.
Wednesday-Friday every civilian not actively hostile to Israel and/or supportive of Hamas moves to what remains of the North half of Gaza. Targeted vaporization of the remaining forces ensues in the South.
I have a hunch that when you tally up the numbers on the Sabbath, the actual number isn't 2 million and the remaining domiciles will fall close enough to parity with the actual number of civilians that nobody will really debate about how to care for a couple dozen refugees.
They just cross into Israel and say asylum. Works for us.
Why "Israel-Hamas War" and not "Hamas Terror attacks"?
This is just Hamas doing what they said they would do in their position statements.
Better questions for the US readers:
What happens next in administration responses to Iran sponsored terrorists taking Americans hostage?
What happens next in administration responses to Iran sponsored terrorists killing Americans?
What happens next in administration actions regarding our funding Iranian terrorism?
"What happens next in administration actions regarding our funding Iranian terrorism?"
But that money is in a bank somewhere, and hasn't been given to Iran, so they can't spend it, because money is not fungible.
Really doesn't get talked about enough how whacking Suleimani after the US embassy attack was BY FAR the single greatest foreign policy maneuver in US history.
Massive success both short and long term, which is why internal forces went full psycho with 2020 and beyond to erase it.
Dunno. The new Koch libertarians said that was bad. Like really bad.

So funny watching Affirmative Americans wander into this political minefield en masse because they’re too dumb to understand the unprincipled exception for Jews built into genocidal race communism
They’re just smart enough to ascertain the rule “kill whitey and take he stuff” but not appreciate implicit and arbitrary ethnic carveouts. Ideological equivalent of a child saying “I eated breakfast” but rather than calmly explain irregular verbs we just ruin their life instead
[Link]
It's not an "unprincipled exception for Jews", it's that people were confronted with graphic imagery of atrocities in real time. If the Hamas terrorists could have helped themselves for a couple of hours and not uploaded selfies with their victims as they were victimizing them, all anyone would have heard of the attack was a number of people killed/captured/injured and the fanatic support for murder and rape would have sounded more like business as usual.
You're not entirely wrong, but you are incorrect. There are most definitely special rules for jews to be excepted from the "white supremacy/privilege" paradigm. Jews have outsized influence, both within and without communism, yet are probably the most highly in-group biased demographic that exists.
The most rabid communist/fascist jew will still give preference to a rival fascist/communist jew over non jews in all spheres.
The younger members of the woke coalition, mostly black people in the context of this hilariously worded tweet, don't understand that. They don't understand that there is ONE limit in the woke world that will actually bring consequences for following the woke way.
What happens next?
Israel pushes all the Palestinians across the border into Egypt, saying, “Hey. They’re your co-religionists.”
Egypt could have taken them, IIRC they used to administer Gaza. They don't want 'em.
Nobody wants the Palestinians. Jordan and Syria could have, too. Kuwait helped them and got screwed when Saddam decided to invade and Palestinians sided with him. Lebanon hosted them and it caused a civil war. They talked a lot of shit to the Saudis, too, and have few friends in Arabia because of it. Israel returned full control of Gaza and they elected Hamas, whose entire charter is "Destroy Israel, push all Jews into the sea" and effectively declared themselves at war.
There's a lot to unpack in the last 100 years of the region, but Palestinians have historically never been particularly welcome, anywhere, and they have pissed off lots of Arab neighbors on a very regular basis for my adult life. They're "Arab" so supported over the Israelis, but that's about it.
I don't know the details, but, yes, you are correct. Egypt definitely doesn't want them.
Wonder how the Palestinians feel about being used as a wedge issue by their coreligionists, while never getting any support except weapons? Probably like Blacks who get nothing from their Democratic “Allies” but welfare and promises.
Who cares?
They've been a scourge everywhere they've been welcomed.
What happens next?
First, Gaza civilians will leave Gaza immediately via Rafah, if they value their lives. Those who remain (or are stuck in Gaza) should physically separate themselves from any member of Hamas. That better happen in the next 24-36 hours; the ground invasion is imminent.
Second, Hamas will be physically obliterated. They will be pursued and killed in combat. There is no escape for them, no safe refuge, nowhere to run. They will die violent deaths; I will not mourn them.

I think the most amusing thing I have thus far observed from the Israel/Palestine conflict has been the way it has put progressivism and jewish in-group preference at odds with each other, and the conflicts I'm seeing on social media and anecdotes about that outcome.
Being pro palestine and being pro israel are (for normies at least) explicitly left-coded and right-coded things.
This conflict is pushing even the most cosmpolitan liberal jews into doing something right-coded, which is causing a lot of turmoil.
It's one of the most interesting aspects of the conflict so far from an American centric perspective. Secular/Liberal jews make up a massive part of the donor base/rank and file middle/upper management of the cultural left, from tastemakers to shotcallers to NGO handlers.
The acute in-group preference kicks in and they want to support Israel on ethnic grounds, but from a political perspective(which is effectively their real religion, progressivism) it is verboten to do so and will incur the wrath of their social circles and their own side.
So you've got a bunch of them who in times of relative low intensity in the conflict between Gaza and Israel feel pretty safe crying about decolonization and how Israel is an apartheid state, suddenly presented with a powerful instinct to condemn that same group.
And simultaneously, all the rhetoric they had a big part in fostering that encouraged concepts like decolonization and intersectionality is now causing feedback that is hitting their own ethnic identity.
As long as this conflict remains in the spotlight, which judging from the stock purchases of defense contractors by politicians may well be for the foreseeable future, it will cause feedback and disarray on the left side of the political spectrum.
And so far the damage control isn't going well, Scott Weiner is the gay state senator in CA who decriminalized both pederasty and infecting unknowing sexual partners with AIDS. The "MAGA Cult" & Trump are overall pro zionism, so he is clearly just saying the quiet part out loud.
This is a useful wedge to drive very very deep, it will improve the strategic situation of the broader right from a narrative perspective.
The overrepresented influence of Israel/AIPAC in the GOP is an issue we're probably going to need to thread the needle on later, though it has an expiration date since it's unpopular with anyone under 50. A step on the road to a GOP with Americans in the drivers seat for once.
Which is essentially my political compass rose. I want America to have a powerful bloc or party representing heartland/heritage American interests over foreign policy ones. No intersectionality, grievance politics, or special dispensation for any ethnic groups. A flat standard.
And when we make more progress on this in the years to come, which I think and hope we will, it's going to be hilarious when they call a meritocracy with no double standards "white supremacy"
When that time comes, just take it for the compliment it actually is.

New Yorkers should not "underestimate" the threat from lone-wolf style terrorists who have been radicalized by Hamas online, warned New York Mayor Eric Adams, as the horror of the Israel-Palestine conflict continues to send shockwaves around the world.
Speaking at a press conference, the Democrat may have warned the city to be on guard, saying: "Don't underestimate lone wolves...people being radicalized online."
He added that messaging social media sites - where Hamas has shared horrific footage of Saturday's attack on Israel - can motivate people to carry out similar attacks.
Authorities in New York are paying "special attention" to communities of Hasidic Jews in the Big Apple while monitoring social media sites, he said.

MUST READ/WATCH:
Senior Hamas Official Ali Baraka:
Hamas planned these attacks against Israel for over 2 years & kept the plan completely secret other than approx. 5 senior Hamas commanders that knew the extent of the operation.
Hamas had a strategy of lulling Israel into a false sense of security by not purposefully engaging in mass violence, joining in other recent attacks/uprisings, & falsely claiming that its sole focus was on governing Gaza. This entire time Hamas was preparing for this attack against Israel.
There is no safe place in Israel. We have factories in occupied territories & Israel capable of meeting our military needs for rockets, mortars, bullets, etc. Iran is also supporting our financial & military needs. The northern front has now been opened by Hezbollah.
We want all Hamas members held by the US & Europe to be freed. The US recently did a prisoner swap with Iran & should entertain another swap with Hamas.
[Link]
Hamas knows this. They are evil not dumb. Their attack did very little to defeat Israel or 'free Palestine.' In an essence it achived nothing much like 9/11. It is unlikely they conducted such an attack without thinking Israel would level Gaza. Something bigger is brewing. Seems to me they are trying to bait Israel into getting a majority of its forces bogged down in Gaza while another force attacks from the north. Iran has been stagging a lot of military in Syria over the last few years.
Too bad Israel doesn’t have any nuclear weapons.
Too bad Israel can't use its nuclear weapons in Gaza. You'd understand this if you'd bothered to look at a map.
But Syria, Lebanon, and Iran have lots of room.
Let’s hope the Iranians violently overthrow the mullahs before it comes to that.
They understood the response because they understand that Israel ALWAYS overresponds to their actions. The bigger the action, the bigger the overresponse. Hamas doesn’t give a shit about ‘Palestinians’. It makes its decisions for the ‘concept’ of ‘Palestine’. The idea of a homeland. Or the ‘umma’. Or something else abstract. Same as the PLO. Except the PLO may also be ok just selling out for money. Not sure Hamas is up for that.
Palestinians themselves also know that they are always gonna be the ones who get screwed. Then now and forever. By everyone. And Hamas knows that too.
I still don’t know what Hamas’ real goal here was. Your idea makes sense but not sure that Hamas action had that much coordination with others. We’ll find out I guess.
Hmm

In February 2020, Harvard Business School got its largest ever gift, $200 million, from Leonard Blavatnik, a Ukrainian Jew.
Bill Ackman, of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, has given tens of millions to Harvard.
There are thousands of others like them. Jews are some of the most generous funders of America's universities, from Harvard to NYU to Stanford to Ohio State. Liberal Jews also donated massively to BLM.
Wake up American Jews!
Stop subsidizing your own demise by supporting institutions that breed Anti-Semites and endorse genocidal killers.
Harvard should have their endowment sized for many reasons. Chief among them is their continued support for Marxism and their sponsorship of both domestic and international terror groups.

Ben can say this about Hamas (and he is right) yet when an American rightist says “we shouldn’t take in millions of third world peoples, since they are not going to magically become Americans because their existing way of life is not like ours and they will not adopt our values” he shrieks “RACISM!”

If I were the Israelis, I would find it very concerning that my airspace-intrusion alert system apparently was hacked and lit up like a Christmas tree.
Even more surprising, they didn't notice until too late.
History says the author is wrong:
"Traced chronologically, the formation of the Haganah, the Irgun Awai Leumi, and the Lohamei Herut, their military and paramilitary groups, their organization, leadership philosophy and actions are shown to be inseparable in their operations and their strong Zionist aims. These three groups attacked the British Administration and their white paper policy, the Arabs, Hitler, and fought in their own civil war. In examining aspects of their role in the ultimate creation of a Jewish state, it is concluded that: (1) Jewish terrorism against British and Arabs did contribute heavily to the removal of the British from Palestine, the abandonment of the League of Nations mandate and the creation of a Jewish state of Israel; and (2) there were no practically affordable alternatives to yielding the mandate available to the government of Great Britain because of the cohesiveness of the terrorists and their sophistication."

As soon as Israel responds with its efforts to root out Hamas, civilians will be killed since Hamas hides behind civilians. Already Israel's enemies and faux friends are saying Israel must protect the civilians. In 2007 Gaza voted Hamas as its government for the express purpose of murdering all the Jews. These civilians have intentionally installed a terrorist regime and they support it. Abrams is wrong -- Hamas' tactic works each time without fail. Hide behind civilians and the world will quickly support Hamas by criticizing Israel because civilians are killed because Hamas locates its strategic targets within the civilian population.
If we applied the world's standard for Hamas to Charles Mansion, Sharon Tate's murder were justified by Charlies Manson's sad childhood and Tate reminded him of his mother. B y the Hamas standard, Manson would still be murdering people today. That's how the Liberals treat Hamas. No matter what vile evil Hamas commits, anyone who holds them and their supporters accountable become a pariah. "The La Bianca's forced us to murder them because they charged high prices in their grocery stores and wouldn't let us shoplift."
You might sound less stupid if you looked at a map. Gaza has 3 times the population density of Los Angeles, which is the US city with the highest density.
The people in Gaza could go to any of the majority Muslim countries in the region, except that the Muslim countries in the region won’t take them.
"Hamas’ tactic works each time without fail. "
True, because Israel can't seem to think beyond relying on an inept conscript military to solve their problems. They mow the grass time and time again and Gaza only grows in population and Hamas gets bolder and more sophisticated. But blame Western liberals by all means. You too are falling into the Hamas trap of divide and conquer.
Yes, we will blame you. As you are to blame. Your lame ideas only yield more innocent deaths and for their the goals of Islamic monsters.
“Yes, we will blame you.”
OK be a stooge. Continue dancing to Hamas tune. It’s working out so well for everyone.
I'm reluctant to wade into this whole mess in the fog of war. Truth is always the first victim and I will never have enough information to sort out fact from fiction until years later. If I even bother. Clinton's war in Yugoslavia was won on the domestic propaganda front with lurid tales of "rape rooms" that turned out to be fiction. And of course GWs WMDs were a laughing matter a few hundred thousand corpses later. The MSM coverage of the war in Ukraine is straightforward regurgitating of neocon talking points. There are always agendas that remain unacknowledged despite the fact that they are undeniable and obvious. In the present war in Israel I find myself reaching conclusions pretty quickly primarily because of the numerous videos available thanks to technology that wasn't available or was strategically censored in the past. It's clear that the actions of Hamas are not a war for independence. It is terrorism aimed explicitly at civilians. Innocent non combatants are not collateral damage. They are the target. Morally, politically and as a practical matter I don't see that Israel has any choice except to occupy Gaza and exterminate any remnant of Hamas. We can only hope that the innocents survive.

"It’s clear that the actions of Hamas are not a war for independence. It is terrorism aimed explicitly at civilians."
I disagree. It seems clear that Hamas wants to provoke a befuddled and panic stricken Israel into a knee jerk response that will widen and escalate the war. They also want to put a stop to any nations like Saudi Arabia from getting closer to Israel. So far it's working and conforming to Hamas plans. Israel is bombing Gaza from the air and it is being attacked from Lebanon, a second front.
Hamas wants to exterminate the Israelis. Period.
I want a brand new Ferrari. You don't always get what you want.
Maybe Israel wants that too? Cull the militant Arab herd every other generation or so?

Waring governments, does NOT automatically mean a good guy/bad guy scenario.
Governments play mind (war) games, e.g., "a long con". The psychopaths who started the wars are long dead, but the system lives on, directed by the political heirs of coercive politics. The details, the history, the players, the "right/wrong" is lost and doesn't matter because we are not morally bound by the mistakes of our ancestors. Customs can be destructive, even when adopted worldwide, as "The Most Dangerous Superstition" by Larken Rose.
We are born sovereign, i.e., equal politically, all having the same rights, even when we have been convinced otherwise. We can still claim our rights anytime, still "come to our senses" and think for ourselves, e.g., reject the politics of coercion, i.e., the rejection of reason, rights, choice by the initiation of force, threats, fraud.
It happens, rarely, but it happens. Gandhi talked the Indians into boycotting the British Empire without violence, by simply convincing them to stop obeying British governors. The British subjects in N. America boycotted the Empire's rule by seceding, beginning to self-govern locally, e.g., "The Minute Men", the Continental Congress.
All governments are unnecessarily based on coercive politics. They could govern with respect for reason, rights, choice, first/foremost. NONE do! Therefore, there are no "good guys" vis-a-vie govt.
And Ukraine relates to any of that how?
This is the wet dream of every democrat.
6. Tehran and Damascus begin to glow.
7. Russia nukes Tel Aviv
That's the end of the Russian problem.

This is just wrong…. it takes a coercive ‘politics’ [Politics (from Ancient Greek πολιτικά (politiká) ‘affairs of the cities’) is the set of activities that are associated with making decisions in groups, or other forms of power relations among individuals, such as the distribution of resources or status. ] to deal with the likes of idealogues – especially in todays world – progressives.
It would be nice to believe we can all live by our natural logical mind but until Galts Gulch spreads over the entire world and we all agree intrinsically agree on everything your statement is so pie in the sky as to be almost laughable. [I truly wish it was not but I live in the real world]
TLDR: There will always be a need for ‘coercive govenment.’ (and the politics necessarily entailed) because we are human. It just doesnt need to assume the super-sized proportions that it has in every country on earth.
