Matt Taibbi: How the Left Lost Its Mind
The maverick journalist talks Twitter Files, the end of the anti-government left, Donald Trump, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
HD DownloadBefore Matt Taibbi was sparring with Democratic members of Congress on Capitol Hill earlier this year over the Twitter Files, he was a darling of the progressive left, appearing regularly on shows like Democracy Now! and others hosted by Bill Moyers and Rachel Maddow.
Though he was always a fierce critic of the Democratic establishment, the rise of Donald Trump suddenly meant that anyone nominally left of center—including progressive journalists like Taibbi—was expected to support Hillary Clinton unconditionally. So when he attacked her as a sellout, argued that the Russiagate narrative was mostly bullshit, and equated the manipulative tactics of right and left media personalities, progressives gave him the cold shoulder. Elected Democrats started treating him like a puppet of the right.
In 2020, Taibbi started publishing his work on Substack and quickly became one of the platform's most popular writers, earning far more than he ever did at Rolling Stone, where he had been chief political reporter. He became even more of a pariah by publishing exhaustive reports that documented how the government sought to control what was said on Twitter about COVID-19 and efforts by Russia to influence U.S. elections. Congressional Democrats unconvincingly pilloried him as a fake journalist, an apologist for Vladimir Putin, and a stooge for Elon Musk.
I caught up with Taibbi at FreedomFest, an annual gathering held this year in Memphis, to talk about the new challenges to free speech, why legacy media is dying, and how identity politics are poisoning political discourse.

You got a cite and a link for that assertion?
ABC is reporting the same thing with real time updates. If it were not for all the hyperbole, SPB would be nothing but a discredited pervert.

Hunters lawyers claimed immunity to all future charges like NARA violations. They now agree it only covers 2014-2019 taxes, all drug charges, and all gun charges.
Still quite an immunity agreement.
And now Hunter pled not guilty since it didn't cover FARA.
You don’t suppose this had anything to do with it, do you?
Judge says Hunter Biden legal team apparently ‘misrepresented’ identity to court clerk

I read Shrike comments for the Hunter Biden Penis articles.
Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott are dancing to ‘It’s Raining Men’ in the Senate.
Like this is new for Lindsey.
turd, the ass-clown of the commentariat, lies; it’s all he ever does. turd is a kiddie diddler, and a pathological liar, entirely too stupid to remember which lies he posted even minutes ago, and also too stupid to understand we all know he’s a liar.
If anything he posts isn’t a lie, it’s totally accidental.
turd lies; it’s what he does. turd is a lying pile of lefty shit.
Poor baby
Are you implying that Tim Scott is homosexual?
Are you sad that Hunter might face equal justice? It does not seem fair for a guy so well connected to the Democrat party.
Whenever I see praise for Taibbi, i feel compelled to remind others how he treated David Ray Griffin. Might not have been calling for censorship, but contemptible nonetheless.
https://www.metafilter.com/75438/The-Ultimate-911-Truth-Showdown-Taibbi-vs-Griffin
And in case you thought it was isolated to just Griffin, he dedicated his time to writing an entire book denigrating 9/11 truthers, not to mention praising masks and vaccines.

He's the vehicle for blatant corruption for the Biden's clan but dem0r4ts don't care. All u think about is ol orange spray tans buff00nery. Hopefully he's in the pen soon so u can STFU about him. I'm sure you'll still be yammering on
Ugh, Matt Taibbi? He’s one of those phony leftists like Greenwald who warned Democrats not to expect any earth-shattering findings from the Mueller probe. I bet he feels silly now!
Because of course in 2023 it’s clear Taibbi and Greenwald were wrong and Rachel Maddow was right.
By phony leftist, you mean right wing? Like James Lindsey?
Is this some kind of parody or joke? Madcow was RIGHT? LOL!
New here?
"Is this some kind of parody or joke?"
Yes.
The year was 1884… Or was it 1787?
Headline assumes preconditions not in evidence.
I know which date Robespierre would give a nod to.
>>He became even more of a pariah by publishing exhaustive reports that documented how the government sought to control what was said on Twitter about COVID-19 and efforts by Russia to influence U.S. elections.
pariah or semi-respected jornolist?
Critic of private companies doing their private company thing.
More Americans died from COVID than in WW2 -- in much less time. We had wartime censorship then. Had we treated COVID as the threat that it actually was, we would have had hundreds of thousands fewer Americans dying.
Tucker Carlson would have been interviewing Tokyo Rose and Axis Sally in 1943.
Putting aside your laughable false equivalence, I'm wondering if you intend to provide credible evidence supporting this little gem:
Had we
treated COVID as the threat that it actually wassucked more government dick, we would have had hundreds of thousands fewer Americans dying. Thanks, buddy.
And more Americans died from being lazy fat slobs than COVID in the same time period. Maybe you want Tucker to interview Ronald McDonald.
And you forgot to mention that 75% of COVID deaths were over 65 and 95% were over 50. How many WWII deaths were seniors?
"And you forgot to mention that 75% of COVID deaths were over 65"
All of which would have died during WW2 times, without any virus even, as life expectancy was right around there.
Yea those over-50s are useless anyway.
"More Americans died from COVID than in WW2"
What's it called when someone posts something much bigger than a lie? When "falsehood", "deceit", "calumny" or "fabrication" just won't cut it.
It’s called a Liarson, and I coined it!
excellent callback lol
Nonsense. Everyone was always going to get covid sooner or later. There was never any chance of stopping it running its course. The response to covid will end up shortening many more lives than the virus did.
The kung flu got rid of the elderly, morbidly obese & folks w/ plenty of comorbidity. Too bad it didn't get u. Time for another b00ster leftist l00n.
Director of NatWest bank resigned today. Although it's a "resigned because we got caught, but we're not changing our policies-resigned."
"Sacrificial lamb."
Banker Barbie got the boot.
The UK government owns the largest chunk of that bank since the 2008 bailout I don't think that goofball will be the only one to go.
BTW JP Morgan Chase closed accounts for Mercola Market possibly for having the wrong opinions about covid.

You know, I'm really glad Reason is starting to cover this in depth, but from a news cycle point of view, this is paleolithic.
In fact, listening to this interview, which feels like a 15th round rehash of everything those of us who don't watch the news already know, it puts me in mind of this Reason article by the much-missed Tim Cavanaugh.
Nick: I don't wanna say the deep state, but...
Why? Because "the deep state" is some kind of MAGA term that *checks reason bylines* makes you look like a Republican?
Because $32T, more than US GDP, ~1/3 of the global economy, is a shallow puddle, if not a drop in the bucket.
The only part of The State that I can come up with that doesn't conform to any definition of "deep" are Biden, Jean-Pierre's, Sotomayor's, KBJ's, etc., intellect.
Reason is firmly establishment.
Robbie Soave suggested not a mandate, but for government to ease restrictions on those who got vaccinated.
"Rather than punishing the unvaccinated, the government could create an incentive for vaccination by lifting restrictions for the vaccinated. "

Or it's more likely he sold out and realized it's easier selling bullshit to the right than it is to the left. The normal way of things.
Because the market for bullshit on the left is over-saturated?
shitlunches would know better than anyone.
El Oh el.
Can't stand a "traitor", huh?
Awwww, poor raspy is salty, as usual.
We get it. They’ve told you for decades that climate apocalypse is nigh upon us, and you believe.
They told you the wuflu came from a wet market, and you believe.
They tell you a dude can be a chick, and you believe.
Yup, sure is tough to sell bullshit to you lefties.
Haha. What a doosh.
Taibbi's stuffed in the penalty box with RFK and Manchin.
Cornel West is coming off the ice, too.
For sound economic perspective go to https://honesteconomics.substack.com/
You are acting like this is novel. Going from far left to far right, which is what Taibbi has done, isn't uncommon. Pierre Laval started out as a left wing socialist. So did Benito Mussolini. Oswald Mosley went from filthy rich Conservative MP to Keynesian Independent MP to Fabian Labour MP and then founded the British Union of Fascists. In less of a transition, Henry Wallace went from Stalin stooge to voting for Dwight Eisenhower in 1956. (The John Birch Society would then falsely accuse Eisenhower of being a Soviet Stooge; Wallace actually WAS one and admitted it!) Similarly, John Dos Passos went from Stalin sympathizer to campaigning for Nixon and Goldwater. In recent years not just Taibbi but also Elon Musk and RFK Jr. have gone from heroes of the nutty far left to promoting the insane (and in the case of RFK Jr., anti-Semitic) crazy far right.
Jonah Goldberg wrote a book called "Liberal Fascism". While it didn't get everything right, it was derided by many on the Left when it hit too close to home. Benito Mussolini was no libertarian.
I don't think Taibbi really shifted that much. To call him far right is ridiculous.
And while I don't care to get into the left vs. right argument, Fascists and Nazis absolutely were socialists and quite far left on economics at least.
LOL no, Nazis were not socialists FFS.
That’s falsification of history. Both Hitler and Mussolini worked tirelessly to crush socialism and the left in all of its forms.
Idiot. So what's the difference between good socialism where the state owns or controls industry and the economy, and bad Nazi socialism, where the state owns or controls industry and the economy?
"LOL no, Nazis were not socialists FFS."
Yeah, just because they called themselves socialist in every speech and even their name, and wrote socialism into their party platform as their main point, doesn't make them real socialists, right?
Why Are We Socialists? - Joseph Goebbels 1932
"We are socialists because we see in socialism, that is the union of all citizens, the only chance to maintain our racial inheritance and to regain our political freedom and renew our German state.
Socialism is the doctrine of liberation for the working class. It promotes the rise of the fourth class and its incorporation in the political organism of our Fatherland, and is inextricably bound to breaking the present slavery and regaining German freedom. Socialism, therefore, is not merely a matter of the oppressed class, but a matter for everyone, for freeing the German people from slavery is the goal of contemporary policy. Socialism gains its true form only through a total fighting brotherhood with the forward-striving energies of a newly awakened nationalism. Without nationalism it is nothing, a phantom, a mere theory, a castle in the sky, a book. With it is everything, the future, freedom, the fatherland!
The sin of liberal thinking was to overlook socialism’s nation-building strengths, thereby allowing its energies to go in anti-national directions. The sin of Marxism was to degrade socialism into a question of wages and the stomach, putting it in conflict with the state and its national existence. An understanding of both these facts leads us to a new sense of socialism, which sees its nature as nationalistic, state-building, liberating and constructive.
The bourgeois is about to leave the historical stage. In its place will come the class of productive workers, the working class, that has been up until today oppressed. It is beginning to fulfill its political mission. It is involved in a hard and bitter struggle for political power as it seeks to become part of the national organism. The battle began in the economic realm; it will finish in the political. It is not merely a matter of wages, not only a matter of the number of hours worked in a day — though we may never forget that these are an essential, perhaps even the most significant part of the socialist platform — but it is much more a matter of incorporating a powerful and responsible class in the state, perhaps even to make it the dominant force in the future politics of the fatherland. The bourgeoisie does not want to recognize the strength of the working class. Marxism has forced it into a straitjacket that will ruin it. While the working class gradually disintegrates in the Marxist front, bleeding itself dry, the bourgeoisie and Marxism have agreed on the general lines of capitalism, and see their task now to protect and defend it in various ways, often concealed.
We are socialists because we see the social question as a matter of necessity and justice for the very existence of a state for our people, not a question of cheap pity or insulting sentimentality. The worker has a claim to a living standard that corresponds to what he produces. We have no intention of begging for that right. Incorporating him in the state organism is not only a critical matter for him, but for the whole nation. The question is larger than the eight-hour day. It is a matter of forming a new state consciousness that includes every productive citizen. Since the political powers of the day are neither willing nor able to create such a situation, socialism must be fought for. It is a fighting slogan both inwardly and outwardly. It is aimed domestically at the bourgeois parties and Marxism at the same time, because both are sworn enemies of the coming workers’ state. It is directed abroad at all powers that threaten our national existence and thereby the possibility of the coming socialist national state.
Socialism is possible only in a state that is united domestically and free internationally. The bourgeoisie and Marxism are responsible for failing to reach both goals, domestic unity and international freedom. No matter how national and social these two forces present themselves, they are the sworn enemies of a socialist national state.
We must therefore break both groups politically. The lines of German socialism are sharp, and our path is clear.
We are against the political bourgeoisie, and for genuine nationalism!
We are against Marxism, but for true socialism!
We are for the first German national state of a socialist nature!
We are for the National Socialist German Workers’ Party!
Why a Workers’ Party?
Work is not mankind’s curse, but his blessing. A man becomes a man through labor. It elevates him, makes him great and aware, raises him above all other creatures. It is in the deepest sense creative, productive, and culture-producing. Without labor, no food. Without food, no life."
The name national socialists should be enough of a descriptor, but we are dealing with leftist retards here
Plus, if crushing the socialists made one right wing, then Lenin and Stalin would be right wingers too.
Totalitarians don’t like competition.
^THIS!^
That is incredibly ignorant and simplistic. They were anti-communist/anti-bolshevik. There are many flavors of socialism, not all of the "workers unite and take over" type. National Socialism was named to contrast with the international socialists they were fighting.
After fighting four elections between 1930 and 1933 on an anti-left and anti-Jewish platform that pledged to slay the mythical beast of “Judeo-Bolshevism,” Hitler became Chancellor in 1933 and made good on his promises to business and his voters to destroy socialism in Germany. Most of 1933 was spent persecuting socialists and communists, liquidating their parties, incarcerating and in numerous cases killing their leadership and rank-and-file members.
Trade unions had been in Hitler’s sights since a general strike paralysed a right-wing-coup (Kapp Putsch) in 1920. He had witnessed the striking workers and vowed that never again would organised labour prevent the right coming to power. It was the left (trade unions and Jews), after all, that he and others on the right thought had “stabbed” the nation in the back on the home-front to cause the loss of the First World War. By early May 1933, the trade unions had been destroyed. German socialism was in tatters. Not for nothing did Nazis say that the “ideas of 1933” (their national-racial “revolution”) had vanquished those of “1789” – namely, the French Revolution and its ideals of equality, fraternity and liberty that have animated the left ever since.
Calling Nazism and fascism “far left” on economics is comical. Have you ever actually read a history or economics book not taught in the public schools of Florida or Texas?
You’re confused because WW2 was really a socialist civil war.
You do realize the Soviets called unions capitalists.
I've put paid to your lie up above with a speech on the virtues of socialism written by Goebbels for Hitler.
Now here are some socialist highlights from the Nazi party platform itself:
11. Abolition of unearned (work and labour) incomes. Breaking of debt (interest)-slavery.
12. In consideration of the monstrous sacrifice of life and property that each war demands of the people, personal enrichment due to a war must be regarded as a crime against the nation. Therefore, we demand ruthless confiscation of all war profits.
13. We demand nationalization of all businesses which have been up to the present formed into companies (trusts).
14. We demand that the profits from wholesale trade shall be shared out.
15. We demand an expansion on a large scale of old age welfare.
16. We demand the creation of a healthy middle class and its conservation, immediate communalization of the great warehouses and their being leased at low cost to small firms, the utmost consideration of all small firms in contracts with the State, county or municipality.
17. We demand a land reform suitable to our needs, provision of a law for the free expropriation of land for the purposes of public utility, abolition of taxes on land and prevention of all speculation in land.
18. We demand struggle without consideration against those whose activity is injurious to the general interest. Common national criminals, usurers, profiteers and so forth are to be punished with death, without consideration of confession or race.
Yup, nationalization of industry, communalism, abolition of property, banning usury... nothing socialist there, right?
Serious question though, how did you manage to make yourself so appallingly ignorant?
you are arguing with someone who very likely has a high school to college freshman understanding of history, but that has listened to enough propaganda to have his brain scrambled.
No amount of evidence you put in front of him will allow him to understand and admit that water is wet.
Goebbels was Hitler's propaganda minister. Papen and Hindenberg both knew that Hitler was on their side, and ignored Goebbels' propaganda.
The Nazi's made war on those parties because they were globalists who were looking to partner with other communist/socialist regimes whereas Nazi's were wanting Germany to dominate the world.
Pfft. Absolute rubbish. Not only that, they couldn't dominate Europe either. However, the communists boasted as they continue to this day, they will dominate the world.
Europe is now a totalitarian state run by unelected rulers in Brussels, most of whom are pedophiles and other deranged satanic morons who couldn't run a toy train.
All of western Europe and U.K. is controlled by a vicious all encompassing ruling elite who want to starve Europe into total submission.
"All of western Europe and U.K. is controlled by a vicious all encompassing ruling elite who want to starve Europe into total submission."
Starving people make good rebels.
None of that refutes Nazis being left on economics issues even a little bit. Do you not understand that different types of socialists were bitter enemies? Look at the Russian revolution, it was full of different kinds of socialists fighting each other. The fact that Nazis fought against certain socialist parties and groups in no way refutes the fact that they were also socialists. Nazis were highly collectivist and explicitly socialist.
"Nazis were highly collectivist and explicitly socialist."
They were partly collectivist, just like everyone else except the Soviet Union who were wholly collectivist. Hitler was a German nationalist above all. Economics, didn't interest him and he knew nothing of it. He loved music, film, cars and history. The notion that Hitler was a Marxist or Leftist is ludicrous. He purged or murdered anyone in the party who clung to leftist ideas, like the Strasser brothers.
Taibbi has NOT gone to the "far right" by any means. For one thing he was always a member of the liberal upper class. His audience definitely contains far-rightists, but he's cynically cashing in by bashing on liberals and Democrats by calling them "the left."
There's nothing liberal about what you little fascists have been cooking up lately.
"Far right"? I guess any challenge to progressive doctrine can only come from heretics, right?
Anybody to the right of Karl Marx is now considered a dangerous right wing extremist.
Just ask the Merrick.
Oops.... I just outed myself for being a dangerous right wing extremist for posting this.
Taibbi means "Corporate Democrats, their supporters and the MSM" when he says "the left." He figured out how to cash in with disaffected Trumpists and right-leaning heterodox netizens so he's begun to call Dems "the left" - it's ridiculous. Go to the WSWS, Jacobin, or any ostensibly left-leaning media outlet (even neutral ones like FAIR.org) and tell me if they're backing this government spying and censorship on social media. Hint: They are NOT.
Signed,
A real member of the left
Another leftist retard who can't tolerate fact-based criticism.
No true Scotsman much?
He's from the old guard of traditionally left leaning, anti-authority, actual "liberals" (not progressives), and has watched his party get taken over by insane, boot-licking, nanny state loving, "do what the govt says or you are a fascist bigot", war hungry, authoritarians.
If you told the left of even the 90's to early 2000's that progressives would look the way they do today, they would be 100% certain you were lying and talking about neocons.
"disaffected Trumpists"
Ah, it's Kirkland.
I noticed that too. So satisfying to watch the demolished narratives of a feckless ideologue like the Reverend circle the drain.
OK, good. You should probably stop voting for the corporate democrats who the MSM runs cover for and supports if you want that to change. Also, learn a bit more about history if you don't want to look like an ass.
Oh, great - a grifter interviews a grifter about how the grift is the future of media.
In 2020, Taibbi started publishing his work on Substack and quickly became one of the platform's most popular writers, earning far more than he ever did at Rolling Stone, where he had been chief political reporter.
This is such a childish thing to say. Did Taibbi ask you to insert this irrelevant factoid, Nick? Or did you just assume that your right-winger audience would get a kick out of this puerile measure of success?
Taibbi's just another "journalist" who has discovered that the right-wingers are more easily parted from their money when you serve up flattering misinformation. It's a dangerous game, though. If you have any principled limit to what you'll say or do, the right-wingers will turn on you in an instant. If you don't tell them what they already "know," you're no friend of theirs.
What misinformation did he share?
The democrat party has finally jumped the fence. They are no longer concealing their true face and that is the face of totalitarian rule. They have been infiltrated by radical left wing extremists and post modernist neo-Marxists. It explains their behavior toward anyone who dares speak out.
The actions and statements from the neo-Marxists including Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Stacy Plaskett against RFK jr. and Matt Taibbi speaks volumes.
Taibbi is half right. He has great criticisms of the left media. I very much appreciate his watchdogging. However, it's hard to listen to him not apply the same reasonig and watchdoggedness to the right. How is Benghazi, Hunter, Clinton's Emails, etc. any different than Rusiagate? In all those cases right-wing politicians colluded with right-wing media to fan the flames of these stories and they keep doubling down with bad evidence. When their evidence turns out to be fake or based on weak leaks they double down and Taibi doesn't seem to care.
He also ignores that Russiagate was based on a very serious crime - the hacking and leaking of DNC emails. He ignores how Trump downplayed that event and immediately took Taibbi's position before Taibbi discovered it. As soon as the hack was leaked Trump spun this as fake news and never looked back. You can buy into Trump's argument, but then it takes an incredible narrative to say the hacks were orchestrated by the left. So the leaks were real and significant and warranted many news stories. Did the left go too far? Of course. But just watch Breitbart or FOX tonight and ask yourself if there is anything different going on. They want to impeach Hunter, er, I mean, president Biden. Why? Because circumstancial evidence. Even Taibbi lacks the self-areness to see that the whole laptop story is a nothingburger based on promises of bombshells yet to come. Time after time the bombshells turn out to be duds. So why doesn't he criticize that coverage and the politicians stoking it and pressuring right-wing news sites to cover it?
Taibbi is making "many times more" as an independent reporter. All based on peddling a sigle, anti-left conrarian streak. Does anyone think he would be half as popular if he turned an equally critical eye toward the right?
He said, "My only concern with Trump is that he over promises". Really? That's his only concern? I don't even know what to say any more. Every accusation he has against the left can be doubly applied to left. Identity politics? Check. Influencing media? Check. Lies. Check check check. Hyping media stories based on little evidence. Huge Check. But sure, he over promises. Like saying in a job interview your only weakness is that you are a perfectionist.
