Biden's ATF Can't Stop Cody Wilson's Ghost Guns
Join Reason on YouTube and Facebook Thursday at 1 p.m. Eastern for a discussion of Cody Wilson's ongoing lawsuit against the federal government.
When the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) issued a new rule to expand the definition of "firearm" to encompass "weapon parts kit[s]…designed to or may readily be assembled, completed, converted, or restored," Defense Distributed's Cody Wilson, creator of the 3D printed "Liberator" gun, did what he always does: He fought back.
Defense Distributed previously fought the State Department, which in 2013 had ordered them to remove the digital gun files from their company website. The parties reached a 2018 settlement allowing the files to stay up, and the 9th Circuit Court in 2021 ruled against the 22 states that tried to stop the implementation of that State Department settlement. New Jersey's attorney general has continued to fight Defense Distributed over the right to distribute its gun files and recently lost its appeal to move the case out of the Western District of Texas.
And in this latest case against the ATF, Wilson and Defense Distributed have once again prevailed—for now. In early March, Defense Distributed won an injunction from the U.S. District of Court of the Northern District of Texas that will allow the company to avoid "irreparable harm" by continuing to sell their unfinished firearms components as the case proceeds.
Join Reason's Nick Gillespie and Zach Weissmueller for a live discussion with Wilson this Thursday at 1 p.m. Eastern. Topics will include Wilson's ongoing fight with the ATF, the future of "ghost guns" in increasingly hostile states like California, his methods of "practical anarchy," and the underlying philosophical beliefs that compel him to fight these prolonged legal and political battles.

A bunch of ones and zeros cannot fire any kind of projectile.
Not a firearm any more than a partially machined hunk of metal.
Just because the fascists pass a law saying it is so does not make it so.
Not a firearm any more than a partially machined hunk of metal.
According to the ATF and Federal law, this IS a firearm. This hunk of metal is now illegal in Washington State.
What about these?
https://www.80-lower.com/80-percent-lower/
Guess not.
"As of April 25, 2023, the sale, distribution, importation, and manufacturing of semi-automatic firearms classified as assault weapons are prohibited. Possession of assault weapons already owned remains legal."
Yep. It is a total ban. I got mine just before the ban went into effect.
And
and manufacturing of semi-automatic firearms classified as assault weapons are prohibited.
That means you can't mill something in your house using a 3d printer.
That means you can’t mill something in your house using a 3d printer.
That means don't get caught milling something in your house using a 3d printer.
FTFY
Technically milling is the opposite of 3D printing. Milling is a subtractive process (removing material) while 3D printing an additive process.
technically yes you can do it legally but you have to register the device once it's manufactured. at least that's the case in California as far as I know.
Not in Washington. Previously, if you milled a lower receiver, you had to engrave it with a serial number, register that serial with the government and during that process you would go through a background check. Now, it's illegal to register that lower with the serial number because the existence and ownership of the lower is illegal.
Here's a shocking revelation for you:
The ATF is wrong.
The ATF is evil.
Fixed that for you.
According to the ATF, but NOT Federal law. Any law that claims it is a firearm is a LIE. Even if it is, any law banning it is a DIRECT violation of both the 1st and 2nd amendments.
Reason misses the point. Cody Wilson may be able to have his plans on the internet, or sell 'unfinished' parts, this is a mere detail fight.
Never underestimate the government's ability to ban or regulate something through sheer force of will.
Reason misses the point.
Along several dimensions.
Reason (at their most libertarian): Cody Wilson interview. Remy video.
PSR, KAK Industries, and the 3D printed gun community (without mentioning the word 'libertarian'): Hold my Glong.
And, again, because it’s still pretty freakin’ on-the-nose (and awesome): The HK Slap (Official Music Video)
Along several dimensions.
And when I say 'several dimensions' I mean, in several dimensions.
Not to controvert (or at least not clearly or yet) what you say about the 80% receiver above, but SIG, for the last couple of years, has been building a platform that's effectively rendered Washington's law moot (or could) *and sold it to the military*. A play that really gets to the heart of the people actually inventing and making something saying what that thing is and a the bureaucrats and legislators trying to tell them they know better.
Time to start manufacturing 79% lower receivers.

So I guess Wilson didn't go to prison for having sex with underage girls? Because... that's ANOTHER way the Biden admin can "stop Cody Wilson".
Yes, I wonder the same. Will this discussion address that?
I guess this was the result.
LOL... "Our daughter can now continue her activities on SugarDaddyMeet.com, knowing that she's safe."
A Thursday news release from the Travis County District Attorney’s Office said that Wilson had sex with a 16-year-old girl in his room at the Archer Hotel in Austin on Aug. 15, 2018, paid her $500 and then drove her to a Whataburger. Shortly after, she called local authorities and filed criminal charges against Wilson, according to the release.
I would damn-near give my left nut to know what relationship this 16 yr old had with the cops when they put this sting together.
Seems mighty fishy. And if this was a sting, and the girl was actually 16 (age of consent in TX appears to be 17, conveniently), aren't the stingers then guilty of injury of a minor as well? And also pimping?
Exactly. Here's how I see what played out.
Wilson did what he did, and he knew it. He likes them young. Ie, he was guilty. But the idea that this girl was knowingly on SugarDaddyMeet.com and then within an hour immediately phone the authorities tells you that this was probably a setup. The cops knew Wilson's proclivities, she was probably a C.I. and the cops essentially told her, "Meet him, make sure you do the deed, then call us when it's over".
Very fishy. Sequence of events suggests that his digital behavior was being monitored.
It was absolutely being monitored. Wilson of all people should have known that, and then stopped messing with underage girls.
Yeah, that screams "Honeytrap" and that the cops sent a minor to fuck Cody on purpose in order to nab him.
New Jersey's attorney general has continued to fight Defense Distributed over the right to distribute its gun files
That's right, folks. 3D printer files for guns are illegal in NJ. Anarchist Cookbook, college chemistry books, Special Forces Guerillia Warfare Handbook (available on Amazon) and various other books are ok, but binary code is dangerous!
One of the worst aspects of governmental overreach currently is what I call “Sitzkrieg.” Government officials at all levels have the incentive and the tax-funded resources to repeatedly violate the Constitution of the United States knowing that it will take months or years for private citizens at their own expense to fight the government in court. Since officials have literally nothing else to do with their time and there will never be any personal expense or penalty for them personally, it’s a losing game for the citizens and liberty in general. I would like to see a Constitutional amendment requiring all new laws, regulations and executive orders to pass a judicial review before taking effect, including all appeals.
Seems like a good idea. Some penalty for voting for an unconstitutional law would be nice too. Creating new laws should be a slower process. You'd think at some point we'd have all the laws we need and legislatures could take it easy for a while.
I have made $18625 last month by w0rking 0nline from home in my part time only. Everybody can now get this j0b and start making dollars 0nline just by follow details here..

Coming soon (if progressives succeed): the idea of a "gun" will be added to the proscribed list of banned knowledge, along with property, liberty, and money. The journey to this utopia will be difficult, but ideologically pure ignorance is bliss.
Fuck the ATF. Lock every last one of them in a wooden church, fill it with CS gas that turns into nerve gas when burned, and set it on fire.
Antisocial, disaffected gun nuts are among my favorite culture war casualties. It is great that right-wing bigotry is going to drag gun nuttery down with it as modern America continues to improve against the wishes of conservatives (faux libertarians especially).
You've been sayin' stuff like this for a while. How long's this gonna take?

I'm working on a ghost gun right now, I'm going to call it ALK-15 in honor of our favorite antisocial, disaffected, left wing reverend. Thanks Kirky angel, you're an inspiration to people who hate communist fucktards like yourself everywhere. Send me your address and I will send you the first prototype, non- working of course because it would be a shame if you accidently killed yourself, nobody on these boards would be able to go on without your sunny uplifting posts.
KAK Industries is totally just named using its founder's initials and not an acronym that stands for Kill Arthur Kirkland.
