Why Did Schools Stop Teaching Kids How To Read? Live With Robert Pondiscio, Nick Gillespie, and Zach Weissmueller
Join Reason on YouTube and Facebook on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET for a discussion of American K-12 education policy with author Robert Pondiscio.
An "unbearable bleakness" has overtaken childhood education as a "pedagogy of the depressed" pushes a simplistic vision of "America the Problematic" on impressionable young students, wrote Robert Pondiscio in Commentary last year.
A former teacher, Pondiscio is currently a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and the author of the 2019 book How the Other Half Learns: Equality, Excellence, and the Battle Over School Choice (Avery), a behind-the-scenes account of Success Academy, one of America's most accomplished (and controversial) charter school networks. (Watch Reason's interview with Pondiscio about that book.)
Public schools have failed to teach kids to read and write because they use approaches that aren't based on proven techniques based on phonics. Many schools have been influenced by the work of Columbia University's Lucy Calkins, who is the subject of a new podcast series from American Public Media, Sold a Story, "an exposé of how educators came to believe in something that isn't true and are now reckoning with the consequences—children harmed, money wasted, an education system upended."
"The South Bronx elementary school where I taught 5th grade for several years was a proponent of Calkins' approach," Pondiscio wrote in a 2022 New York Post op-ed. "We adopted her teaching methods and employed her literacy coaches for years, to very little effect. Her greatest sin against literacy comes after kids learn to 'decode' the written word, whether or not they are taught with phonics, which is just the starting line for reading."
How did this happen? Is the solution school choice—a system in which parents can opt out of traditional public schools and their flawed approaches to teaching reading? As Pondiscio argues, is withdrawing "concern for traditional public schools" equivalent to withdrawing "concern for our republic"?
Join Reason's Nick Gillespie and Zach Weissmueller for a live discussion with Robert Pondiscio on all these questions and more this Thursday at 1 p.m. ET. Watch and leave questions for Pondiscio on the YouTube video above or on Reason's Facebook page.

The answer is the Marxist teachers unions. They want unhinged activist students. If a kid can read that makes them a liability
Unless we can drug them.
You know who else enjoys drugged kids?
Spb?
Joe biden?
Paul Pelosi?
Bill gates?
Epstien?
Bill Clinton?
Joe Paterno?
All Chicago public school employees?
Okay this is getting depressing
I get paid over 190$ per hour working from home with 2 kids at home. I never thought I’d be able to do it but my best friend earns over 10k a month doing this and she convinced me to try. The potential with this is endless. Heres what I’ve been doing..

Also the elites want ignorant slaves, teach people to read, and they might read about freedom and liberty and demand those for themselves. We certainly don’t want to teach critical thinking either, those people will think for themselves and see through the lies of the rich and powerful. Better to keep people ignorant and waiting for a handout. Those people are much more compliant to the elites.
Very true.
Call me anachronistic but aren’t students starting school already literate?
Not necessarily. In high school, I tutored a few kids who could barely read. I also remember kids in elementary school who couldn't read at all upon entering kindergarten.
In my day (uphill in the snow, both ways) it was not expected that anyone knew how to read in Kindergarten. That's where I learned my ABCs and my counting. Didn't actually learn to read until first grade.
This is not as sad when you recall that that was an era when not everyone was expected to attend Kindergarten, let alone pre-school.
In high school, I tutored a few kids who could barely read.
Dramatic reenactment.
Home earnings allow all people to paint on-line and acquire weekly bills to financial institutions. Earn over $500 each day and get payouts each week instantly to account for financial institutions. (bwj-03) My remaining month of earnings was $30,390 and all I do is paint for as much as four hours an afternoon on my computer. Easy paintings and constant earnings are exquisite with this job.

I hope you're not saying that like you think it's a terrible thing. Like Brandybuck below, I remember when most kids started first grade not knowing how to read. They all finished first grade knowing how, however.
Yeah, i'm old, but when I was in kindergarten, no one could read and no one was expected to. By second grade, everyone could, though some were better at it than others.
I’m not old, but middle aged. Gen-x era kindergarten teachers actually told parents NOT to teach kids to read before school.
Which was really fucking stupid, but that’s not the point.
Point is, I was one of three kids in my class who could read before school. But everyone was well on their way to reading by the first grade. It was the normal thing for kids to START reading at 5 or 6 or whatever age it was we started school.
Google pay 200$ per hour my last pay check was $8500 working 1o hours a week online. My younger brother friend has been averaging 12000 for months now and he works about 22 hours a week. I cant believe how easy it was once I tried it outit.. ???? AND GOOD LUCK.:)

On the contrary, many first graders are showing up for school nearly feral.
Great article, Mike. I appreciate your work, I’m now creating over $35,700 dollars each month simply by doing a simple job online! I do know You currently making a lot of greenbacks online from $28,700 dollars, its simple online operating jobs.

Because these teachers are more into indoctrination and their teachers' union than anything else.
Why teach reading when we have Youtube and emojis?
Besides, teaching reading risks offending somebody, either with the choice of materials or how language and grammar are defined.
Educators should be niggardly when providing reading instructions?
Oh no, you dih-int!
I see what you did there. Couldn't help but snigger.
Probably because they prefer stupid children who can repeat left-wing talking points?
This is why the recent focus from pre-school and K teachers is showing the kids how to protest and how to be an activist.
speaking from experience, kids learn to read on their own. if anything, public schools are a negative influence on reading skills.
could read before I got to school?
Everything old is new again. We are repeating the 70s. Want answers? Go read "Why Johnny Can't Read". Old book, but still relevant.
Kids learn how to read through phonics. Why schools keep trying to re-invent reading is bizarre. We know what works. It's like the states don't want local schools to teach kids how to read. It's NOT the teachers making this shit up, it's states mandating the latest fad. The only people who win are fat pocket consultants. Good gig if you can get it, but there's a special circle of hell for those who create illiteracy for profit.
*Most* kids learn to read through phonics. I understand that the handful who teach themselves to read before entering school often do so through something like the "look-say" method that the education establishment wants to apply to everyone. Those kids more or less just grok the meanings of individual words, and later figure out that the words are made up of letters that represent particular sounds.
If a child has no other recourse than "look-say" then they will learn that way. Obviously Chinese does not have phonics, for example, and they don't teach phonics in China. But for a phonetic writing system like English has, phonics is the way to go.
Kids read differently than adults. Adults who know how to read don't sound out words, they recognize the word and know it. But that takes years of practice. But children learn better with phonics. Sound out the new word to learn it, and a few years of practice don't need to sound out the word again.
Even adults do this. Show them a new unfamiliar word and they will sound it out. Parasaurolophus, for example. Without phonics, and adult would need to wikipedia to sound out that word before they could even begin to process it.
The look-say method means the teachers have to teach each individual word in the English language one at a time. With over 170,000 words currently in use in the language, it's a wonder children can't read entering high schools.
Phonics is the way to go. And it's why private schools use it to teach reading. Even the elite schools where the heads of the teachers unions send their kids.
Obviously it's far more important that they be able to list all 72 genders and use the correct pronouns for each than silly cis-normative patriarchal things like how to read. Duh, you'd know that if you weren't a cis-hetero white male shitlord.
75 now - - - - - - - -
Try to keep up
Geez. I remember when it was only about 60 genders. I can barely follow along anymore.
Learning to hate myself properly is so much work!
I’m pretty confident that if we pare down the woke population enough that the number goes back down to 2.
You can't teach what you can't do.
I'm sure phonics is racist.
Isn't everything?
I think anti-racism says that overt racism isn't racist. But everything else is racist. Or something like that.
It was invented by uncircumcised Philistines too dumb to learn hieroglyphics.
The western alphabets, sure. Uncircumcized to be sure, but that just means they had better sex. Don't be jealous.
I can't imagine learning a heiroglyphic written language like Chinese, let alone use its keyboard. I can imagine learning Hebrew or Greek however, even Russian. I can't imagine learning to read and write any Chinese language.
That's a "you" problem.
This is a longer-term thing than comments seem to recognize.
I've looked at colonial America's accomplishments in reading and I doubt 10% of Americans today reach that high.
And of course things nowadays are so much less in terms of Trutha and Beauty. I went to an expensive Prep school, and lots of rich lowlifes sent their kids there. But what did we get assigned to read? The Deerslayer and the Yearling !!!
Literacy was already quite high prior to public schools. Education was still a thing back then, you know.
Teaching has forgotten and / or ignored the principle of cognitive readiness and the developmental abilities of young brains. This also applies to math - where the initial "drills" for addition and subtraction prepare the child for the next steps to take (see highly successful countries like Finland and Singapore for how this works and an understanding of what the phrase "age appropriate" means in a cognitive context). Boring for adults - yes. Effective for kids - yes. Making kids hate math because of trying to have them engage in abstract math principles too early is an abomination of a way to "educate."
I am making a good salary from home $6580-$7065/week , which is amazing under a year ago I was jobless in a horrible economy. I thank God every day I was blessed with these instructions and now it’s my duty to pay it forward and share it with Everyone,
🙂 AND GOOD LUCK.:)
